Otis Redding became a crossover artist at the Monterey Pop Festival, up until then he played to mostly black audiences. Otis was given the honors of closing out the second day of the festival. It would be the last major concert he would play. Otis had to undergo surgery to remove polips from his vocal cords. After recovering he made some recordings for an album he said would be his Sgt Pepper. He recorded "Dock Of The Bay" convinced t would be a hit but Staxx refused to release it. Otis died three days after he recordeded "Dock Of The Bay" in a plane crash while doing some promo appearances. Bar-Keys trumpete player Ben Cauley was the sole surviver of the crash.
