I remember the first time I heard Vanilla Fudge. I was pretty young and my favorite Aunt gave me an 8-track tape of their first album. I popped it into my player and the first song I heard was their cover of "You Keep Me Hanging On". I was already a young Hard Rock fanatic after her gifts of The MC5 - Kick Out The Jams and Frijid Pink - Frijid Pink. I hadn't heard Black Sabbath yet but the experience would be the same as my 1st time hearing Vanilla Fudge. They had broken the song down to the riff, slowed it down to a dramatic crawl turning the vocal line into an anguished plea for mercy. The dire plea being made even more poignant by the cries of Mark Stein's Hammond screaming as he ripped the sadness from it's very core like some phantom player in the dead of night. A host of Hammond stranglers would arise in the wake. Ken Hensley and John Lord quickly come to mind. John Lord & Ritchie Blackmore were such fans of Vanilla Fudge that they copied the format for early Deep Purple. Recording dramatically changing songs from The Beatles, Donovan and Tina Turner on early releases. When Led Zeppelin opened for them in 1969 the audience screamed "You suck! Bring on The Fudge!" It was documented in The Hammer Of The Gods book. I laughed when I read that actually. I mean can you imagine telling your future friends "I once booed Led Zeppelin so I could hear Vanilla Fudge". Irony...

We lost Tim Bogart on January 13, 2021, from cancer. He was 76.

This show was bootlegged as "Stand By Me" The Internet says this was 1 LP, 200 copies, with the first 100 copies on red vinyl. issued in 1988 on the Diamond Sound label as DS001, out of West Germany. That bootleg called it a "Live Concert - Somewhere in US 1986."

Take that all with a grain of salt (English idiom meaning it may not be true.)

Here's what I've observed:

The Westwood One Pop Concert series ran from about 1983 to 1988.  At the time, Westwood One
had several "concert" shows:  "Superstars In Concert," "In Concert," "Pop Concert" and "Live At Gilley's" (which evolved into "Westwood One Presents.")  The first three featured rock and pop acts, while Gilley's/Presents was Country.

The "Pop Concert" series is the most confusing, as it looks like the shows varied between "live concerts" and "artist profiles" (which featured studio tracks).  The "Superstars In Concert" and "In Concert" shows usually featured harder rock acts, while the Pop Concerts were a bit lighter.

However, there's a lot of overlap.  Elton John, Robert Palmer, Jefferson Starship, Bruce Hornsby, Moody Blues, Stevie Nicks show up on all three of these "rock" shows, while Melissa Manchester, Julian Lennon, Sade, and Spandau Ballet turn up only on the Pop Concerts.  Greg Kihn turns up on "In Concert" and "Pop Concert."

As for the show... it's pretty good. Julian suffers by comparison to his father, but hell, so do most groups and singers.  If his name was Gordon Potrzebie we would probably consider this a triumph!

Of interest is the end of the concert, where Julian tackles his father John Lennon's legacy
with a run through Lennon's cover of "Stand By Me," (to my ears, not as good as his
father's version of the song, but a pretty good shot at it), the Beatles "It Won't Be Long,"
(a solid rendition of an underappreciated Fab Four track), and "Day Tripper," done in a synth-pop arrangement that doesn't work for me.  It's not bad... it just painfully begs a comparison with the Beatles hard charging original and comes up short, in my opinion.

HBO recently aired a new Tina Turner documentary that Rosebud & I liked. It was pretty in depth but not quite as much as the recent Aretha Franklin docudrama. They didn't mention Tina's cancer, or kidney failure but did mention her conversion to Buddhism during treatment. What they did get into was her life with Ike & after. They also showed a lot of performance clips and studio session film. Anyway if you have HBO I recommend the documentary, it's really well done. The tape itself shows a little age but is a very good listening experience. This performance was chosen for the songs chosen to perform. It's also chosen because it was recorded before the Private Dancer sessions. This is an FM recording not the bootleg Acid Queen, the artwork was just provided for those who would like to have a cover.

Rosebud & I recently watched the National Geographic Genius: Aretha Franklin miniseries. The multi-part drama takes you from Aretha's childhood days to her death August 16, 2018 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 76. It gets into some of the darker side of her life as well as the triumphs. We really enjoyed it so we thought we would post some live Queen Of Soul music for our friends here. We chose this one because of it being fairly early in her Secular Music career. It was also picked for the song selection. If you like Aretha's music this is a great show to have for your collection.

Our next post in our Tribute To Progressive Rock Bands is the British band Renaissance. Renaissance combined Rock with elements of Classical, Jazz and Folk to come up with their sound. If you liked the Curved Air show posted not to long ago you'll like Renaissance. Their some what Operatic, some what Classical approach brings to mind a Yes, E.L.P. hybrid with a female vocalist. This show had me with the epic opening track "Can You Hear Me?". It sets the tone for the next 2 hours of awesome, epic Progressive Rock.

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to adjust some track marks. I also muffled a loud guitar cord pop at the end of a track. No other work was required on the wave files. Even though the DVD is marked as having a lossless sound option, the actual broadcast source is lossy. That being the case the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper.

Another great post for our Roots Of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal series. Finnish Progressive Metal Legends Amorphis chose their name correctly. The band was initially a Brutal Death Metal Band called Abhorrence. They released a demo called Disment of Soul before breaking up. Some of the members formed Amorphis a little after. The bands first release was a Melodic Death Metal album. The second album added a twist to the Death Metal with lyrics written based on an ancient Finnish Epic Poem, The Kalevala. They also added clean vocals and keyboards, as well as Finnish Folk rhythms. The band would continue to expand their sound with every album. Eventually dropping the Death Metal elements from their new material. After lead vocalist Pasi Koskinen left and Tomi Joutsen was hired they returned. They kept the clean vocals, keyboards, saxophone and flute as well. The bands still uses The Kalevala for inspiration as well. Amorphis has been a big influence on the Heavy Metal scene, expanding the boundaries of the genre. Think of Amorphis like Opeth but with shorter songs.
