This isn't just a Flac Upgrade The MP3 was VBR So t's An Upgrade There Too!

The first thing I want to say about this great sounding set, is that not one performance took place at the California Jam no matter what the title might suggest. That being said, EVERY PERFORMANCE is Soundboard/FM quality, leading me to believe it's a compilation of radio shows. The Who tracks come from one of their King Biscuit Flower Hour appearances. I was told but can't confirm that the Mott The Hoople tracks are from a King Biscuit Flower Hour show. I highly recommend this 3CD set, I mean look at the artist and track list, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Robin Trower, Leslie West, Peter Townsend, et al one thing the title was correct about is the Guitar Factor!

Since there was no cue sheets, label or cover art scans I have included a news article on one of the shows recorded for this broadcast.

My guess is that the single CD boot I have from this tour is from this very broadcast. I remember when Under A Raging Moon came out there was a Radio Version of the song that had a voice over naming the various drummers as they did their short drum solos for the song...wish I could find that version!

I love The Who Live! It took them a while to actually get a decent representation of their live power on a studio album. The critics all agree that Who's Next was that album. I agree with them on this point. Still, my favorite Who album is Live At Leeds. Basically it was the second Who release I owned. It was on 8-track tape...so yes I am old (lol). I was also given a little before that the American release Magic Bus The Who On Tour. A compilation of early Who tracks that were from singles or EPs. The early recordings sounded real thin to me but Live At Leeds blew me away. The power reminded me of bands like Vanilla Fudge, The Jeff Beck Group and Led Zeppelin.

I can't remember when it was but not too long ago Pete Townshend made a statement that The Who had invented Heavy Metal with Live At Leeds. It was some what controversial with some Metal Heads and critics. Now me I believe a little more like this: The Who was definitely an influence on Heavy Metal and on Punk Rock. The tones and performance on Live At Leeds were just as instrumental as the more accepted Metal influences. The MC5, Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Vanilla Fudge and The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart are all accepted as Proto-Metal Hard Rock Bands. The thing I found interesting is how many US Punk Rockers I met that loved The Who and hated almost every one else. Anyway this is another version of a very well known Who show, but it sounds real good!

The back cover states; "Live, Boston, MA, USA '89". However, it seems this may actually be from a solo tour in 1985, perhaps even the Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, December 8,1 985. The sound quality on this one is very good. Roger gives a fine performance. His voice does give a little on "Free Me". Roger even comments on it by saying its why he always plays it late in the set. All fans of The Who that don't have this one really need it.
