Our second Hard And Heavy Hump Day post is a re-post and Flac upgrade of an older Opeth post. This 5 song performance shows every reason that Opeth is one of my all time favorite bands. Opeth has been a constantly shifting musical force from the beginning of their recording career. Constantly changing with each LP, their particular brand of Progressive Metal includes elements of Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Folk Music and more. The songs are usually over the 10 minute mark but never feel overly long. Once on tour opening for Glenn Danzig, Opeth was given 20 minutes a night. There just happens to be on their 2nd album Morningrise a song that is 20 minutes long. That song, "Black Rose Immortal" was played every night of that tour (but never again). I kick myself in the backside every time I think about not going to that freaking show!!

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-adjust some track marks and add a fade in/fade out at the beginning and end of the show. NO EQ or Noise Reduction was used. No re-mixing or re-mastering was done either. The DVD had LPCM Stereo Audio but was made from a lossy source so the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper, aligning all sector boundaries.

It's been a little while since I posted any Opeth. Being one of my favorite bands it's actually been too long. You know how some bands over time shift from the early sound that drew you to them to some thing you just don't want to by. Then there are some bands that you love no matter how many twists and turns their music takes. I haven't bought a Metallica album since And Justice For All. I own every thing that Opeth has released, a few of those I own in more than 1 issue. Metallica has released some albums since And Justice For All that completely abandoned their Thrash Metal roots (Load, Reload) and has grown more popular with it. Hey that's cool, I just haven't wanted to follow. Opeth was a Progressive Heavy Metal band that used Death Metal elements in their very unique melodic/heavy sound. Opeth quit using Death Metal elements and have gone more in a Heavy Metal meets Goblin Progressive/Jazz Rock Metal sound that just pulls me in. Both bands still include older numbers in their live sets to please the old guys like me but have grown musically. Now that is the only way for some bands to continue to make "true" music so I say go ahead explore, find new sounds that make you happy. Stay True!! Then there are bands like AC/DC and Motorhead of that you depend on not straying too far from their roots. Just as freaking good!!

Opeth is one of my favorite bands. They have gone through some changes in their career musically, like all Progressive Rock/Metal bands do. Some of Opeth's original fans (myself included) dislike the fact that the Death Metal vocals have been completely stricken form the newer music. I however still love the band and have loved every musical change Mikael has taken Opeth's fans on. I mean they still play the old stuff live too so no harm done. The music is still a complex combination of styles.

This CD was given as a promo CD with every copy of Rock Hard Magazine #292-9/2011. The official studio track from Opeth's album Heritage has been removed. It's been a little while since I posted some Opeth, September 2016 as a matter of fact. Too long for  a band that I call one of my All Time Favorite Must Have On A Dessert Island Bands. Opeth has continued to progress musically and challenge their core audience with every release. The band has completely dropped the Death Metal vocals from their studio albums since 2011's Heritage. The music itself has gotten more Progressive while still being aggressive. Live Opeth still plays their classic songs with the Death Metal influences intact. Some fans have voiced displeasure that the band has continued to progress in this manner while the band still has a rabid (and growing) following.

One of my all time favorite bands makes yet another appearance here at Just Dave's Place. This time the classic 4 man line-up checks in while on tour to support Blackwater Park. This would be Opeth's first world tour, with stops at a lot of the major festivals, including playing to 60,000 at Wacken Open Air of the same year (that set is coming soon in the future by the way!). My Opeth uploads seem to be pretty popular with visitors to Just Dave's Place, so I hope my fellow Opeth fans enjoy this one that comes from before the keyboards.

A great recording, sound quality is such that it could be a soundboard or a very high quality audience recording. At any rate an awesome performance, An all acoustic set including an all acoustic clean vocal performance of "Demon Of The Fall"! Mikael Åkerfeldt's between song banter is in Swedish, of course being from Stockholm this isn't surprising.

Not a death metal vocal for the entire show. Opeth always likes to progress with each release. The latest CD release Heritage is the second to not have the Death Metal vocals. The first was 2003's Damnation. Each of these releases spark angry debates among fans, some of which do not want Opeth to choose this option as a permanent style shift.

Nice sounding broadcast from the Deliverence & Damnation tour cycle. This line-up would last one more CD and tour then Lopez and Lindgren would both leave for personal reasons. Per Wiberg was actually a touring member only at this time. He was made a permanent member in 2005 and would end up leaving in 2011. This show is from Opeth's extensive tour to promote the Deliverence & Damnation CDs. Damnation was the first Opeth album to contain no Death Metal vocals. The album caused a lot of debate between fans about if Opeth had "lost it". It was not the first, nor to be the last time Opeth challenged their fan base by challenging themselves musically.

Opeth on tour to promote Watershed, their 9th album, and also The Roundhouse Tapes their second live album. By now frequent visitors to Just Daves Place should know that Opeth are one of my all time favorite bands. This great live performance is a very good example why. Never have Opeth been given a bad concert review. I have witnessed my fair share of awe inspiring performances, never a bad show. Opeth's music is pretty complex, many peaks and valleys as riffs and vocal melodies change. Easy to produce in a studio especially with today's technology. But Opeth can pull it off live and make it seem easy. So download this and treat yourself to a great live performance, real musicians no backing tapes needed.

Recorded while on tour for their 8th album Ghost Reveries. The album was the first with keyboard player Per Wiberg as a actual member of the band. Per had been a session player since 2003. On it's release some long term fans were yet again dismayed at the bands further progression. Some fans would prefer Opeth to simply rewrite there first album repeatedly instead of grow as artists. Opeth started as a Blackened Death Metal band, but by time of their first release Orchid, they had morphed into a Progressive Metal band that used elements of Death Metal, such as the down tuned guitars and guttural vocals. They also used clean vocals, acoustic guitars, and keyboards on that first album.

Another festival appearance from one of my favorite bands, this time on tour to promote the twin albums Deliverance and Damnation. The two were supposed to be released as a double CD but Opeth's record label would not agree to that plan. The label actually told the band it would not give them funding for the recording of Damnation. Label execs didn't think a CD from Opeth without Death Metal Vocals in the songs would sell. All the tracks on Damnation were of the melodic type Opeth would include on their otherwise very metal albums. The band recorded both albums at the same time , then released Deliverance first. Damnation was released after the Deliverence Tour, the Damnation Tour would feature only Opeth's melodic material.
