Like I Said it's Pre-FM Season so every post set will have a Pre-FM recording included. This time we have featured some early Troops in the 1980's Heavy Metal Revolution. Thanks to early battles fought by such bands as Mama's Boys, Loudness and Y & T the Heavy Metal Battle For The Airwaves was won. Although it would take Jethro Tull stealing a Gammy from Metallica to bring really heavy music to radio.
Mama's Boys came from Northern Ireland and the core trio are brothers. They later expanded the line-up. They got there start playing pubs and being discovered by Berry Devlin of Horslips. They were the opening act for Horslips' 1979 tour. They released 3 self financed albums before getting a big label deal. They achieved moderate success with the singles "Needle In The Groove" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" (the Slade track). The band folded in 1993 when Tommy McManus passed away after a life long battle with leukemia, he was 28.
Loudness formed in Osaka, Japan in 1980 after guitarist Akira Takasaki left the Japanese band Lazy. Takasaki & original drummer Munetaka Higuchi disliked the Pop Idol music the band played. Loudness was signed to a major Japanese label by 1981, releasing 4 studio albums all sung in Japanese. In 1985 Loudness released their 1st international album Thunder In The East. American audiences loved Akira Takasaki's Eddie Vanhalen-esque guitar shredding. However the bands English translator wasn't very good so their lyrics were a thing of constant ridicule. (They used the word pile instead of mosh and a bit of other silly things). The band went through some line up changes but they are back to their original line up less Munetaka Higuchi. He passed away from liver cancer November 30, 2008. He was 49.
In 1972 Y&T started off in Oakland, California U.S.A with the name Yesterday & Today. After releasing 2 albums the band shortened it to Y&T since that was what fans would chant for encores. Y&T gained some FM airplay with the track "Mean Streak". They however didn't receive wide spread radio airplay until "Don't Stop Runnin'" off In Rock We Trust. The next album Down For The Count brought fame with the Hair Metal-esque single "Summertime Girls" in 1985. The fame kind of waned in the 1990's but Y&T are still playing shows. Joey Alves passed away March 12, 2017, at 63 from ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease complications. Phil Kennemore passed January 7, 2011 at 57 from lung cancer. Leonard Haze passed away September 11, 2016 at age 61 from complications of COPD. Dave Meniketti continues on with a new line up.
