This is a very nice sounding recording from the 1975 tour. This 6CD Box set covers 2 shows in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. Make sure you have some spare time because this is over 6 hours of music. Both versions of "Dazed & Confused" are 40 minutes long each. Both versions of "No Quarter" are 25 minutes each.

Band was on the same bill as Country Joe & The Fish, and Taj Mahal. From the bands US Tour early 1969. Led Zeppelin played the Fillmore from January 9 through January 12, 1969. Then back on April 24 & 27, 1969.

LPs cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning system prior to a flat transfer of the vinyl to CD-r. A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used prior to LP playback on said system. I used Goldwave to to manually remove a few real big pops that were due to scratches on the LP. I did not use a pop fix or noise reduction program. This and a couple other records, all boots, were found in the basement of my house when I moved in. They were covered in mildew or mold, which was cleaned by the sonic cleaner. There will still be some snaps but the vinyl is now playable and an enjoyable listen.

While looking for things to post this hump day I stumbled across this on my Led Zeppelin drive. It's a nice sounding recording of a legendary show in Osaka Japan remastered by dadgad. dadgad has done some great remasters of some of the vast collection of bootleg sources out there for Led Zeppelin. This speed corrected remaster comes from the Empress Valley Supreme Disc Live In Osaka which is made from the master tape (so that is the cover art you get). A great listening experience for all collectors.

Viva Les Bootlegs Original Notes:
This CD came out in 2000 on the Tarantura 2000 label out of Tokyo. It's a version the famous Zeppelin release 'Pb' or 'Pure Blues' which has been released many many times on vinyl and CD. There have been many debated regarding where the original source came from, one theory is that it was a radio broadcast, the other is that it is a raw soundboard tape
The big difference with this release is that it's the first time a TAPE source has been located and used. All previous releases have come from vinyl sources. The producers of this release acquired a 2nd gen tape from an American collector who had the tape stored away since 1983. It was then speed corrected and 32-bit Re-Mastered by CoolMixMan aka Blackdog.

I downloaded this show from a gone but not forgotten blog called Viva Les Bootlegs. Viva Les Bootlegs had a nice variety of artists like The New JDP. Now this bootleg is not really the best copy of the Vancouver B.C. show but has a soft spot in my heart. It was one of the first bootlegs I downloaded from the internet. Back in the early 1990s, it was on a dial-up connection and was MP3 192kbps. It took a full day to download (ah the good ole days of the internet). Now some people complain if a download takes an hour. Thankfully it won't take you that long to download this one. The free down loaders get around 1MB per second (or something like that anyway). So you'll be able to enjoy this one a lot quicker.

- "Rock And Roll" starts when the song is almost over.
- Jimmy Page breaks a string during "Over The Hills And Far Away" which delays the start of "Misty Mountain Hop".
- The transition between "Misty Mountain Hop" & "Since I’ve Been Loving You" is a little rough.
- Recording is missing "Moby Dick" and what ever the encore may have been.

It's been a little while since we posted any Led Zeppelin on the blog so here you are. This is a pretty good sounding recording from Zeppelin's 1973 Tour of North America. I haven't listened to any shows from this tour in a while so that's why I picked this show. The fact that "The Song Remains The Same" is not the show opener was weird but that's the way the 1973 tour went. I think it may have changed by the end but I may be wrong. John Paul Jones also keeps his solo vehicle, "No Quarter" to 12 minutes, kind of short. It remains my favorite song from the Houses Of The Holy album. The acoustic part of the show has also been side lined for this tour. No worries though "Dazed And Confused" is it's normal half hour beast.

The one thing that bothers me about Led Zeppelin is Jimmy Page & Robert Plant's complete disavowing of their influence on Heavy Metal. They point at some of the mindless dibble that posers put out during the Heavy Metal domination of the industry. As always there are a lot of bands that jump on a band wagon and put out sub par music. Happened to the Grunge and Alternative scenes. Rap and Country Music have not been immune to the same over saturation. But I digress, if Led Zeppelin had not been, Heavy Metal may very well have ended up the mindless dibble they pointed out. Because of Led Zeppelin Heavy Metal/Hard Rock has melody and texture. The light and heavy ethos of Zeppelin created the power ballad. Heavy Metal music can have texture if you will, such as Metallica slowing to a crawl in the middle of "Master Of Puppets" only to speed up to a face melting end. Every guitar player I worked with in my decades in Heavy Metal has given Jimmy Page as much credit as Tony Iommi. I don't want to forget that Led Zeppelin may have helped to invent Progressive Heavy Metal as much as Rush (since Rush was influenced by  Led Zeppelin), with "Kashmir" alone (not to mention "Achilles Last Stand").

Using the best recordings from Led Zeppelin's 4 night stint at The Capitol Center in Landover, Maryland the maker of this compilation created a great composite live album. The liner notes cover what songs from what day was used. They also state that the makers used a hybrid matrix recording for all tracks. In doing so they have created the 1977 era Live Album Led Zeppelin should have put out. Yeah I think it's that good myself, but you don't have to take my word for it, you can download it. The flac is in 24bit so it is ready for a audio DVD if you like.

Since Rosebud picked a Led Zeppelin recording it's also going to be this weeks entry in our Roots Of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Series. Although Led Zeppelin disavows their illegitimate Metal children just like illegitimate road children there's no denying their influence. You can not deny that the chunky, heavy riff that starts "Whole Lotta Love" didn't launch thousands of Metal bands. Has anyone heard of Kingdom Come or Great White? Also "Stairway To Heaven" is the very blueprint of the Power Ballad. Every 1980's Metal Band had to prove that just because they were Hard, it didn't mean they couldn't still be Soft. On VH1 Classic's series on the roots of Heavy Metal the host set up an interview with both Jimmy Page & Robert Plant. When he arrived the lawyer of both artists greeted him saying Led Zeppelin denies having anything to do with the Heavy Metal genre. Since this interview was to be on their influence on the genre it is being cancelled. Jimmy, Robert, you can deny us, but we know the truth.

Heavy Metal Roots & Branches Post #12

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant deny having anything to do with the genre of Heavy Metal. The duo wouldn't even grant an interview for VH1's documentary, Heavy: The Story Of Metal. The representative that delivers the message stresses that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant say they were never a Metal band and have/want no connection to the genre. Despite the heavy denial (pun not intended) Led Zeppelin were very instrumental in the development of Heavy Metal. All it takes is one listen to some of the Traditional Metal and Hair Metal bands and the influence is very evident. The Power Ballad is every Metal Bands grab for a Top 10 Hit, the origin of The Power Ballad is debated but it can not be denied that Led Zeppelin II's "Thank You" is a strong contender for that spot. Robert Plant's over the top vocal style is also a huge influence on most of your Traditional Metal Singers, David Coverdale of Whitesnake and Jack Russell of Great White are perfect examples.

 Another obvious choice since Jimmy Page was a member of The Yardbirds before forming Led Zeppelin. When Keith Relf, Chris Dreja, and Jim McCarty called it quits, Jimmy Page was left with the rights to the name and  responsible for finishing off the bands live commitments. Jimmy Page formed The New Yardbirds with Robert Plant, John Paul Jones & John Bonham. The band morphed into Led Zeppelin.
