Known Faults:
- All 3 records suffer from surface noise in the quieter sections. The commercials on Side A are really affected.
- There are visable markings on the surface of Record One Side A that look like something was stuck there and cleaned off. These markings cover the area which contains the tracks "Find Your Way Back", "Best Of The Biscuit Show #BOB-400 Break - Bill Minkin" and "Commercial - United States Navy".

Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone on Side A for the DJ to set levels before broadcasting the show, it has not been encoded.
- There are two locked groove show promo beds at the end of Side B. One with a voiceoverby Bill Minkin and one without, they have been encoded and moved to the end of the program.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.
- Record One Side A was both cleaned and recorded a second time in an attempt to mitigate the surface noise which is worse one Record One Side A than any of the othr sides.

Other Notes:
- Our Associate Draftervoi found out DIR Broadcasting has released this recording a few times I have included all of Draftervoi's notes on the releases and the origin of the recording.
- Draftervoi's Press Coverage discoveries are also included as Extras in the Art & Info folder.
- The thing that has always struck me about Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship live is how much like a good live Hardcore Punk Band live there performances hang right on the edge of falling apart. An experiment in controlled chaos if you will, giving them that dangerous feeling that live Rock Music has had since Bill Haley and The Comets concerts in the 1950s that ended in the audiences rioting and trashing halls.

Both bands were Hot at the time. You couldn't turn on an FM station, walk into a teen club or an arcade without hearing the hits of Jefferson Starship and Missing Persons.

Known Flaws:
- The vinyl had a bit of the little "dimples" that vinyl can have. These usually can't be heard. Unfortunately some made audible noise.
- There is a long ambient keyboard intro and outro on the song "America" which was very hard to clean up there will be some vinyl "artifacts" that are still noticeable. These were not able to be cleaned up without doing more hard to the sound of the recording so they were left as is.

- Paul Kantner formed The KBC Band in 1985 shortly after leaving Jefferson Starship and finishing  of court procedings between  Kantnar, Grace Slick and Bill Thompson.
- The KBC Band unfortunately did not last more than one album and the following tour. Kantner went on to re-form The Jefferson Airplane. It seems Paul Kantner was on a constant musical search for something during the 1980s.

Very nice quality sound on this soundboard recording that just popped up at Trader's Den very recently. It's a soundboard recording from The Mickey Thomas era of Jefferson Starship. Grace Slick had yet to rejoin the group as this is before the recording of Modern Times. Meaning that "Stranger" had not yet been recorded. This is the 1st recording I have heard of the Grace Slick-less Jefferson Starship live. Interestingly to me, it seems like on the older material Mickey is singing the Grace Slick parts and some one else sings Marty Balin's parts. I think it might be Paul Kantner because he sings lead on some Freedom At Point Zero studio tracks but I could be wrong.

The extra cool part is the 12 song "Soundcheck" at the beginning! It is from a 1978 recording. Meaning of course it's Grace Slick and Marty Balin singing!! So yes it's an extra special must have for Jefferson Starship fans! I love it because I never got to see Jefferson Starship live. Closest I ever came was "Mickey Thomas' Starship" for free at a small fair here in Michigan. That my friends was nowhere near like seeing Jefferson Starship or Airplane. Bootlegs like this is all I have to keep that bad memory at bay!!!

Grace Slick is one of Rosebud's favorite singers. This comes from her recently expanded collection. Like i said in an earlier post The Trader's Den is closing. I have a fairly good share ratio which I am using up downloading as much as I can before October 19. They need someone that can help write code and update the site on a more modern platform. Sucks but I'm not a coder if it wasn't for the ease of blogger's dashboard we wouldn't be here.

Back to this show. It's nice sounding recording for it's age and only a 1st Generation tape, makes me want to hear the master. Hope you enjoy it!

This is a compilation of 2 separate TV appearances by The Jefferson Airplane. The main body of this recording is from the April 1970 performance from Wally Heider Studios. Just two songs "Eskimo Blue Day" and "Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil" are from the February 1970 performance at The Family Dog. The Airplane would last roughly 2 more years before becoming The Jefferson Starship. The last two shows of the 1972 tour held at Winterland in San Francisco would be the end of Airplane live shows until 1989. Out of the ashes of The Airplane of course came The Jefferson Starship, but also the band Hot Tuna so some great music was till to be made by all.

David Freiberg - keyboards

One of Rosebud's favorite female lead vocalists. She has a respectable amount of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship stuff. I can go with almost all of it, but when it became Starship (without Paul Kantner) I lost interest. I had hoped for a continuation of Freedom At Point Zero's Hard Rock but that was not to be. I really love this performance. It includes material like "Fast Buck Freddy", "Rock 'n' Roll Is Good Time Music", "Jane" (a personal fave of mine) and "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" (a freakin' great song). The sound is pretty good as well, there are a few flaws already pointed out above. Enjoy Everyone, Rosebud did pick another great  one!

For post #2 of this installment of Rosebud's Salute To Her Favorite Singer's we have the duo of Grace Slick and Micky Thomas. Marty Balin & Grace Slick had left the band so Micky Thomas of the Elvin Bishop Band was brought in (this show has him belting out one of my favorite songs "Fooled Around And Fell In Love"). The music also changed to something more commercial. More of an Arena Rock kinda thing. When Paul Kanter felt like it was time to move on, he actually quit the band. That forced the modification of the name to Starship. That version of the band also had a few hits before it ultimately broke up. Paul Kantner later resurrected the band, while Mickey Thomas tours the State Fair circuit with Mickey Thomas' Starship.

For our next post from Rosebud's Salute To Her Favorite Singers we have the Legendary Grace Slick. This show from a Classic Line-up of Jefferson Starship having Marty Balin on co-lead vocals. Rosebud came to Jefferson Starship through the MTV period of the band. I have however schooled her on the difference between that era and the 1970's version of the band. The thing I always liked about this era of Jefferson Starship live was that feeling of chaos that could fly out of control at any moment (and sometimes did). That's the thing that drew me into the Hardcore Punk Rock scene. That feeling that every concert was a living breathing example of Intermitant Explosive Disorder (the more violent version of The Call Of The Void). This show from Jefferson Starship is a perfect example of that raw Rock n Roll energy.

ABOUT THE ANNOUNCER:  Rick Dees had a Top 10 hit with "Disco Duck", won Billboard Magazine's "Radio Personality of the Year" for ten years in a row, guest-starred on numerous television shows and a few minor movie roles, and is still hosting "Rick Dees Weekly Top 40", the longest continually running hit music countdown in the world!

ABOUT THE VENUE:
Rick Dees announces the venue as the Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland, (which took place on July 1, 1981).

The King Biscuit Flower Hour (also produced by DIR) syndicated a show attributed to Saratoga Performing Arts Center.  The Saratoga show was on June 24, 1981.  King Biscuit broadcast tracks from that show twice, with different set lists.  The first was July 19, 1981, and the second on a "Best of the Biscuit" show January 3, 1982. The Best of the Biscuit version is up in streaming audio on YouTube, and a comparison with the Mello Yello Presents reveals the tracks are identical.

All of the songs from both versions of the KBFH shows are on the Mello Yello version.

There are four songs unique to the Mello Yello show:  "Fast Buck Freddie", "Mary", "Light The Sky On Fire", and "Dance With The Dragon".

Wolfgang's Concert Vault lists this as Saratoga but doesn't include the unique songs from the Mello Yello broadcast. I don't detect any change in the ambiance of the recording on those songs, but both venues are outdoors so "room ambiance" is probably not a good guide.

The show is most likely from one venue, but I don't know which is correct.

ABOUT THE MELLO YELLO shows:
The "Mello Yello Presents" syndicated broadcasts were prepared by the DIR Broadcasting Corporation, the same company that did the King Biscuit Flower Hour for the ABC Radio Networks. 

I've only seen shows from 1981 and 1982, so it looks like the Mello Yello sponsorship was short-lived.

This Jefferson Starship show has the code MY-6 scratched in the run-out groove of all three records (on both sides).  My guess is that this was the sixth in the series of broadcasts, but I'm unable to track down all of the earlier shows so that's unconfirmed.

The five shows I have identified (along with their broadcast dates) are:

May 2, 1981 - Rod Stewart
May 3, 1981 - Anne Murray

Oct. 9, 1981 - Jefferson Starship Weekend Concert, ABC Contemporary, two hours
Oct. 10, 1981 - Moody Blues Weekend Concert, ABC FM, two hours
Oct. 11, 1981 - Charlie Daniels Weekend Concert, ABC Entertainment, 90 minutes

April 10, 1982 - Genesis (this is also subtitled "Super Groups In Concert" on the disc label)

That's not complete, but it looks like they clustered the shows on one weekend, targeting different radio audiences.

ABOUT THE SOFT DRINK: Mello Yello is a high-caffeinated, citrus-flavored soft drink produced and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company which was introduced on March 1, 1979 to compete with PepsiCo's Mountain Dew.

This nice sounding recording comes from the tour to promote the Modern Times album. This was the first release to feature a returning Grace Slick. Grace had been asked by Paul Kantner to leave the group after the bands disastrous 1978 Germany concerts. Marty Balin had also left in 1978 so Mickey Thomas of the Elvin Bishop band was recruited for Freedom At Point Zero. Grace Slick returned at the end of the Modern Times recording sessions adding background vocals to 3 tracks and lead vocals to the single "Stranger". I'm pretty sure I downloaded this from the old Hear Rock City blog so thanks go out to them!
