- The Collective Of Live Music owes Sam Elliot's Mustache a huge debt of graditude for sending his vinyl for encoding.
- A Big Thank You to Draftervoi for once again snooping out the elusive concert date for another Collective release.
- The more of these shows I edit for SAM the more grateful I am for this thing we call music. I am listening to more bands and styles of music that I would never have listened to in my younger days which is saying a lot. I live music, I am a vocalist, play drums and bass. I have worked as an engineer, producer, and as a musician. Lately I just have been amazed at how music touches that thing inside me we call a soul and lifts my mind and body.

Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove "Ovu" Test Tone at the beginning of Side A used by DJs to set volume and balance levels before broadcasting. It has been encoded and placed in it's own folder so it will not be accidentally played.
- There are 2 locked groove promo bed at the end of Side B with music by Franke & The Knockouts, one with a voice over from Bill Minkin, one without. They have been encoded and moved to the end of the program.
- The Dregs portion of the show was broadcast in entirerty before being picked up and edited by King Biscuit Flower Hour.
- During one of his talks to the audience Franke Previte says "God it's early" leading me to believe the Franke & The Knockouts portion of the show may be a Coffee Break Concert At The Agora in Cleveland.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.

Other Notes:
- Franke & The Knockouts had a pretty good beginning. Their eponymous debut album had hit a respectible No 31 and spawned a Top Ten Billboard Hit with the # 10 "Sweatheart" which also hit #13 in Cashbox. Their follow up album Below The Belt hit No 48 with the single "Without You (Not Another Lonely Night)" hitting #24 on Billboard and #22 on Cashbox. The Album Oriented Hard Rock genre would be swallowed up by Hair Metal by time Franke & The Knockouts released their thid album.
- Tico Torres who played drums on the tour would leave Franke & The Knockouts for fame and fortune in the Hair Metal band Bon Jovi.
- Band leader Franke Previte would go on to song writing fame and fortune with the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" hit which went Platinum when used in the motion picture Dirty Dancing's soundtrack sung by Bill Medley and Jenifer Wells. Previte also hit Multi-Platinum with the Dirty Dancing single "Hungry Eyes' sung by Eric Carmen formerly of The Raspberries.
- The Dixie Dregs in a move to garner more radio airplay shortened their name to The Dregs in 1981. They also decided to write some songs with vocals in 1982. For those songs Alex Ligertwood of Santan and Patrick Simmons of The Doobie Brothers were used in the studio. Alex Ligertwood would appear live with The Dregs to perform the vocals. This didn't improve the bands commercial apeal so the band split up in 1983.
- Steve Morse would go on to form The Steve Morse Band, play guitar for Kansas, then Deep Purple. Rod Morgenstein would join Hair Metal band Winger and the Pro group Rudess/Morgenstein Project. Andy West went on to session and live work that put him into high demand. T. Lavitz went on to work with Jazz Is Dead a Grateful Dead Jazz Cover Band. Original violinist Alan Sloan studied medicine at Medical College of Georgia, earing an Anesthesiology residency. His replacement Mark O'Conner who had won Nashville's Grand Masters Fiddle Championship prior to joining has gone on to play more sessions than I could list here. Alex Ligertwood sang with Santana from 1979's Marathon til 1985's Beyond Appearances.

While this show was intended to be a single broadcast I've broken the songs up by group, in case people want only one or two of the groups for their collection.

Atlanta radio station WKLS-FM and Capricorn Records co-sponsored a one-time show "The Rebel Jam" featuring three of the labels acts: Stillwater, Dixie Dregs, and Sea Level.  The finale featured a jam by members of all three groups, joined by J.D. Mangrum of Black Oak Arkansas and Larry Berwald from Wet Willie.

It was a free concert. WKLS-FM listeners registered at local record stores and when your name was drawn and called out over the air, you had 24 hours to claim your tickets by calling the radio station.

It proved a popular idea, so 96 Rock broadcast the show live.  This is NOT from the live broadcast, however.  Capricorn Records recorded the show on a 24-track mobile recording studio, and mixed and edited it down to three reel-to-reel tapes.  Capricorn distributed the tapes to stations in the Superstars Radio Network (there's an additional essay with more information on the Superstars Radio Network included). Based on our prior research, there were probably about 40 stations in the network...and not all of them would have picked up a Southern Rock live show.  We don't know how many stations broadcast the mixed and edited version.

"Out On A Limb," "Mind Bender, "Grand Larceny," and "Refried Funky Chicken" were officially released on a 2-LP Capricorn Records various artists live compilation "Hotels, Motels And Road Shows" in July 1978. A truncated version of the album was issued in Japan in 1989. All of the Rebel Jam songs were on the CD.  There does not appear to be a domestic or European released on CD.

The Ruth Mitchell Dance Company performed during two of Dixie Dreg's songs.  The Internet tells me Ruth Mitchell opened her dance studio in Atlanta in 1957 and that "she loved jazz dancing, and many of the pieces she choreographed reflected that affinity, along with bridging dance into rock music. Her pieces included interpretations of The Alan Parsons Project’s Tales of Edgar Allen Poe, The Who’s Tommy and Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells. Other memorable pieces by Mitchell include Cindy, Archy and Mehitabel, Panopticon and Dark Side of the Moon."

In 1978 in San Francisco, I was all about punk rock: louder, faster, shorter was the order of the day and musical virtuosity was not just suspect but downright opposed. For me, there's a lot on this tape that's very interesting to me.  Southern Rock wasn't as popular in the Bay Area as on its home turf down in Dixie; they wouldn't have broadcast a show like this on local radio.  I'd never heard of Stillwater; had ONE SINGLE FRIEND who listened to the Dixie Dregs, and never heard Sea Level back in the day. So this is a chance for me to hear what I missed in 1978.

All of these band featured virtuoso players; in particular Dixie Dregs and Sea Level stand out as bands I should have paid attention to 1978 had I not been genre snob.

I downloaded this from an ftp in 1998. The site had Deep Purple and related bootlegs. The sound is fairly good and the Dregs were on fire during this performance. I have others that sound better but  this recording is kind of a personal favorite since it is the first Don Kirshner audio that I had in my collection. This a very enjoyable show so add it to your Kirshner and/or Dixie Dregs collection.
