3 songs in 43 minutes, it's short on titles not on outstanding performances. I am really enjoying the fact that a Detroit born and bred Kenny Garrett is playing sax on this one. Chick Corea only plays with the best, knowing that he picked a Detroit musician is a point of pride. I love it when 1 of us makes it out of The D. Detroit has always been a deep ocean of talent with a rich musical history. Oddly enough with with that rich history it's always been a scene that was hard to break out of. A lot of the music that came/comes form Detroit was/is seen as empty of anything but energy. The MC5 seen as a huge influence on Garage Rock, Punk Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Alt-Rock and Grunge were dismissed in their day. Their are more stories than that but The MC5 are the best known example, also this isn't Jazz talk so I will end this little rant by saying enjoy the music and check out those sax solos!!

One of my favorite concert memories was going to the Yes Union show at The Palace Of Auburn Hills. There was 9 of us that went in one van to make transportation easier. We all had scattered seats having bought them late. Only 2 of us sat together, Me and my great friend Gypsy Dan. The Gypsy and I have known each other a long time, bonding on our mutual love of all things Rock n Roll and marijuana!! We worked together in a production company called Red Eye Rock Productions that ran a weekly Red Eye Rock Fest in a big field in Northern Auburn Hills. He was also my weed man for decades...We sat together and were about 5 rows back from the rotating stage. Dan bought a program which I used to roll some really big joints. We lit one up just as a girl in front of us lit a cigarette. That's when we noticed an usher was only 2 rows behind us. The usher waled forward and told the girl to put her cigarette out. Dan and I kept smoking, she didn't say anything. We lit up another around the 3rd song and this girl in front of us lit another cigarette. The usher leaned over my shoulder while I had the program open in my lap with weed on it, tapped the girl and said "Next time I see you you will have to go stand in the back" then walked away. This girl then turned around and said to Dan and I "What the hell?" Dan and I just lit another doobie and offered her a hit. We never got bothered.....

The Haunted was formed out of the ashes of At The Gates. At The Gates was one of the most influential bands to emerge from Sweden. At The Gates was one of the founders of the "Gothenburg Sound" or Melodic Death Metal. Not only did At The Gates influence other Melodic Death Metal bands such as Dark Tranquility and In Flames but were the most influential band on the Metalcore genre. In interview after interview early Metalcore bands more or less said their was only one good band in the world At The Gates. If you listen to early albums by Shadows Fall, All That Remains etc you will hear direct copying of At The Gates riffs. The Haunting brought those elements to a tight groove and kicked all their asses again!

My Metalhead Mind told me that I have been forgetting my fellow Headbangers with my posts lately. To remedy that I have a couple great Metal Bands for you this time around. We start with one of my favorite early Metal Underground Bands Helloween. Helloween's debut full length Walls Of Jerico was and still is one of my favorite Heavy Metal albums. Walls Of Jericho blew me away, it was fast yet precision with Kai Hanson's vocals striking a different tone than the rest of the Speed Metal/Thrash Metal bands. Kai didn't growl he sang with a voice that could hit some very nice high notes. I was surprised when the band hired a front man. I thought Kai Hansen's vocals were great for their music. Michael Kiske could really hit the highs and sang very smooth. So yeah when I bought Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1, I was still hooked. This show really takes me back to The Heavy Metal Take Over Of The 1980s. So many different sounds emerging, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal the list goes on and on....Relive those days with Helloween.

*There are a few glitches in the recording I believe from a cable issue.

I downloaded this recording for two reasons. #1 I love Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp #2 Because Speedy at So Many Roads To Ease My Soul is looking for recordings from Farm Aid. So hey 2 birds killed with one big rock. I don't post audience recordings unless they are worth listening to more than once so after downloading this I had to audition it before posting. I was sitting in my music room listening to this and Rosebud came in and sat on the couch. It was during the Willie Nelson set and something Willie sang or said made her giggle. I asked if she could hear everything okay and she said yes that she was enjoying it. I then asked would she listen to it again she replied yes. The sound is pretty good, some times a little distant sounding with some bottom end booming but all in all a very enjoyable listen.

Black Oak Arkansas:

Brian Downey drums

When this popped up at The Trader's Den about a week or so ago someone commented "Sunken treasure has just been found after all these years" and called it "A must have for any Black Oak Arkansas fan!" I happen to agree! Actually even the most casual of Black Oak Arkansas listener should add this to their collection. This is a top notch recording of Black Oak Arkansas showing the Reading Festival attendees exactly what the noise in The States is all about. Black Oak roll out all their tricks from Dandy's washboard bashing, microphone stand crotch walking, and Ruby Starr belting out the backing vocals all the time looking so damn fine! Oh yeah there is also 3 Thin Lizzy songs LOL The recording is really fine, excellent even.

I have the original version of this show posted in MP3. This is a definite upgrade both in encoding and in sound. This classic show has been Remastered by the team of Lewojazz and Tom Phillips. If you look at the details it was like a complete overhaul and the proof is in the listening! This is a great show that pays tribute to the musicianship of quite a few legends and the arrangement talents of Carla Bley. Charlie Haden is no slouch at writing and arranging great Jazz music, but chose Carla Bley to arrange his Protest Jazz Band's music. Carla's feel is all over this performance. Carla always loved the use of brass in her arrangements as well as odd timings that made all of Carla's music instantly identifiable as well as extremely entertaining. I haven't even touched on the deep well of talented performers enlisted to make this music, Paul Motian, Dewey Redman, Don Cherry, as well as Bley, and Haden and a list of top notch sidemen who's names may have faded a bit but are just as talented as the bigger names they sit next to...This is an awesome way to spend your Sunday Morning Jazz time! Enjoy my friends....
