Another great sounding performance from early in the Silver Bullet Band era of Bob Seger's career. This comes from a Pre-FM vinyl source. Bob starts the show off by playing a couple acoustic songs before calling the band out. What follows is a classic example of why Detroit loved Bob Seger so much, the man and band could kick some major Rock & Roll ass!! With a majority of this concert coming from unreleased numbers, this boot is a must have for all Bob Seger fans. Once again the recording comes from a time before sax man Alto Reed would join so the lead instrument on "Turn The Page" is the keyboard much like the original studio version on Back In '72.

Tommy "Alto Reed" Cartmell passed away from colon cancer December 30, 2020, he was 72.

As a lot of you who follow this blog know Bob Seger's music is very special to me. My childhood memories are rapped with his songs. One of my first concerts was Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band at Cobo Hall Arena. It was the Stranger In Town Tour, the opening act was a Southern Rock Band called Toby Beau. I went to this show with my best friend/cousin/partner in crime Jamie. His Mom & Dad and 2 more sets of Aunt & Uncles were going and had 2 extra tickets. I had snuck out in 1976 to see Kiss at Cobo. I also snuck out in 1978 to see Black Sabbath at Cobo with Van Halen, I was done for.

The following year I joined my first Garage/Basement band, my cousin Jamie went to the audition with me. He went to almost every audition with me. When my band Psychosis started touring Jamie was my roadie & personal security. When we lost him to a motorcycle accident it was too much. At first I couldn't listen to music for a while. Everything seemed to stir up to many memories. I almost quit the blog too (true story JD). Music finally brought me out of my depression. Bob Seger music especially, well Jamie gets to meet Alto Reed now. Rock & Roll Heaven just got another Bad Ass Sax Player....I always wanted to see Clarence Clemons & Alto Reed jamming together!! Jamie could be their roadie.

Three great broadcasts in one convenient box set. These three broadcasts have been repackaged by a lot of bootleggers. This box set has awesome sound. The recordings used are of fine quality and very enjoyable. I was at the Cobo 1980 shows. I had tickets for every show for that run. I forget how many there were, all of them were recorded for the Nine Tonight album. Only a couple songs made the album, most came from the Boston 1980 run. My first time I went to a Seger concert was 1978 Cobo Hall Detroit for the Stranger In Town Tour. There was a Southern Rock band called Toby Beau opening. They had a hit single out called "Angel Baby". I remember Toby Beau's lead guitarist came out with a banjo and did like a 5 minute solo (although my Aunt who was there swears it was 15 minutes) before they played their album track "Bull Dog", which is about a gunfight. I have heard and seen many bands do a guitar solo. That was the first time I saw a band do a banjo solo. Bob was awesome that night in 1978. During "Turn The Page" Alto Reed was on wires playing on top of the amps. He then jumped up and was swung over the middle of Cobo Arena. He then did a Sax solo spinning in one direction then spinning the other way as well. I did not expect anything like that from Bob Seger, Kiss maybe, not Bob Seger. I have not missed a tour of Seger's, Rosebud and I saw him together on the last couple of tours. She said he was awesome. I told her you should have saw him in the 1970's...

This recording comes from comes from a time of transition for Bob Seger. The highly successful Live Bullet was released in April 1976. This album will help Bob Seger achieve a higher level of commercial success. The tour to promote Live Bullet was kind of a telling as to Bob's success being regional . He had headlined a concert at The Pontiac Silverdome with Todd Rundgren, Elvin Bishop and Point Blank in front of 78,000 people. The next day was this concert in Schaumburg, Illinois, at a Shopping Mall Club (as it's called by the DJ in his intro) in front of less than a thousand people. The tour would wrap up and Bob Seger would record the fabulous Night Moves album which sends Bob into the Billboard Charts landing at #8 and now certified 6x Platinum in sales. Live Bullet is 5x Platinum in sales.

So download this recording from the time period where the World figured out what Detroit knew all along Bob Seger Can F%#@king Rock. And yes that is a Boogie  Araingment of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"

A good sounding recording of a live in studio broadcast. Bob & the band seem to be having a good time jamming. Of the 10 songs performed only 4 were ever recorded by Seger. The rest are just songs they liked playing together. The Borneo Band, or My Band as they were fist called, was Bob's first backing band. The Last Herd or The Bob Seger System, as they are better known, was a band with Bob being the main song writer. When Bob first went solo he used Teegarden and Van Winkle, or played with just an acoustic guitar or piano. He formed the Borneo Band to record the Back In 72 album. This was the beginning of his long musical relationship with Alto Reed, then called Tom Cartmell. By the end of 1973 Bob would fire The Borneo Band for being too unreliable. Simms, Oldecker, and Levy joined Eric Clapton's band, Bob formed the Silver Bullet Band, at first without Alto Reed. He wouldn't join the Silver Bullet Band till Beautiful Loser.

Alto Reed was not a touring member of The Silver Bullet Band at the time of these recordings. Broadcast was compiled from 2 prior broadcasts from 1974. The broadcast was sometime in the 1990's. The bootleg was sourced from vinyl, there are some pops present but not distracting. I did run a passive pop/click fix with Goldwave. I bought this CDR bootleg at a small used CD store for $4.00. There was only a printed insert with a track list. I ripped the waves with EAC to run the pop fix and convert to mp3. I had just installed Traders Little Helper so I ran a check on the waves and they came up 100% CDDA so I encoded to flac level 8 instead.

This is a great early Bob Seger show with emphasis on his blues roots. There 4 songs in the set Bob never recorded : J.J Cale's "Bringing It Back From Mexico" , Houndog Taylor's "See Me In The Evening", Albert King's "Don't Burn Down The Bridge" and the Bob Seger Original "Full Circle".

This one shows a little age but is a completely enjoyable listen and a must for all fans of Bob Seger. The long jam on "Turn The Page" is worth downloading this boot right now. Alto Reed takes a long solo and the band jams on, as the song morphs into "Heavy Music / Let It Rock". After that long jam the band plays a solid rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Baby, Please Stop Messin' Around". The final encore of Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Turn On Your Love Light" is unfortunately not included. According to sources the Bob Seger System's "Lucifer" was also played but not aired.

Great stuff! Bob Seger & Jason Aldean dueting on 8 tracks and chatting in between. This thing is worth the down load just for the guys duet on "Turn The Page"! I can't be more happy about the way the audio turned out here. CMT edited in clipps of future songs right before interviews and some songs as well. These were distracting to the listening experience so I edited these out to make things flow better. Don't miss this one Bob Seger fans I think this might be the first broadcast or soundboard source to surface from Bob Seger's latest comeback. I'm not sure though.

This is a great collection of outtakes from the long career of the Motor City's Favorite Son Bob Seger. Bob Seger released his first single "Ballad Of The Yellow Beret" b/w "It's Florida Time" as the vocalist for local Detroit band Doug Brown & The Omens in 1966. The song was a parody of Sgt. Barry Sadler's hit "Ballad Of The Green Beret" and a slam against draft dodgers. Bob went solo soon after and released "East Side Story" b/w "East Side Sound" with his own group Bob Seger & The Last Heard. Under The Last Heard moniker Bob would release 4 more singles. When the band was picked up by Capitol Records they changed the name to The Bob Seger System. The Bob Seger System released 3 albums Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, Noah, and Mongrel before Bob went solo in 1971 with the "Lookin' Back" single. After that Bob released the Brand New Morning album. Brand New Morning featured Bob singing and playing either piano or acoustic guitar. The album is long out of print and Bob actually insists it never be re-released. Seek it out  it is a fantastic listen. Bob Seger's career took of when he released the Beautiful Loser album. From there a string of hit albums would follow and the world learned what Detroit knew for a long time....Bob Seger could really rock!

I have included a special bonus CD of really rare singles which makes this a very highly recomended collection for Seger fans. Another early recording from Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. Yet again prior to Alto Reed joining the group. I bought this CD-r at the same little record shop that I bought my copy of Bob Seger Live On Retro Rock. There was only a printed insert with the song titles and date & location info. The sound quality is pretty good, the tape sounds like it has a little age to it but you can still enjoy it. Fans of Bob's early music should take note we have live versions of  "If I Were A Carpenter" and "School Teacher" on this recording!
