Accept never obtained the commercial success they deserved in The USA. Their biggest selling album in The States was Balls To The Wall, due in much part to the so called "Gay Metal" controversy. The lyrics of the album dealt with oppression and one of the worst cases of the times was the terrible treatment of Homosexuals. This is a subject that has always made instant controversy in The States from the religious right in our country. The controversy brought the attention of record buyers wanting to see what the fuss was about. The album peaked at #74 on the US Billboard charts. The follow up Metal Heart only hit #94 even though (or maybe because) it had a more commercial sound. In 1987 Udo Dirkschneider was fired from the band. Udo continued on as a solo artist and in a kind of bizarre show of support the members of Accept helped write the entire Animal House debut album by U.D.O. (I mean Black Sabbath didn't write Ozzy's solo debut Randy and Bob did)
