Van Halen played the Oakland Coliseum for two days so they could film live footage of the band for shows like Kirshner, Midnight Special, etc. According to the band only these 3 live tracks exist because of glitches during filming. However this doesn't sit well with fans because the show was filmed with multiple cameras not video taped. This means that every camera would have to of malfunctioned at the same time. This is believed to be imposable. It is believed the performances didn't hold up to the bands standards instead. This seams to be more probable as Dave could sometimes get a little too drunk to remember the songs. I refer you to the much bootlegged US Festival show for an example of this. So you get 3 live songs and an interview with David Lee Roth in between. The promo video for "Oh! Pretty Woman" was also aired but since the audio is the official album track it was omitted.

Recorded while Sly & The Family were promoting the Fresh album, the band was just 2 years away from breaking up. Sly and the rest of the band had been heavy users of cocaine and PCP for years and it was taking it's toll. Live gigs were on the decline due to the fact that members wouldn't show up for gigs. They would pass out during gigs, and Sly had a habit of just leaving in the middle of shows. After a really bad show at Radio City Music Hall, which sold only one eighth of the tickets forcing the band to scrounge up the funds to return home, they called it quits.

Billy Preston, sometimes called The 5th Beatle, was a integral part of a few major rock acts. The Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Mahalia Jackson, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and many others owe credit to Billy's keyboard talents. The Beatles actually gave him equal billing on the "Get Back" single releasing it as The Beatles & Billy Preston, and yes he was on that rooftop for that famous concert. This is a great although short set from Billy, show casing some of his hits. Billy dances, sings , and plays his heart out.

Preston had battled kidney disease in his later years, brought on by his hypertension. He received a kidney transplant in 2002, but his health continued to deteriorate. He died on June 6, 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona, of complications of malignant hypertension that resulted in kidney failure and other complications. He had voluntarily entered a drug rehabilitation clinic in Malibu, CA, at the suggestion of guitarist Is'real Benton and suffered pericarditis there, leading to respiratory failure that left him in a coma from November 21, 2005. His funeral was held on June 20 at the Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, California, where his remains were interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California.

There still remains an unreleased CD of Beatles covers that he had been working on for several years before his death. Many tracks from this CD were previewed by him at The Fest for Beatles Fans shows in the years before his death.

Ike & Tina rock the house in their typical high energy style. It's rather ironic that they chose to cover Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed", a song about spousal abuse, given the known history of the relationship. The raw emotion can be heard in Tina's voice when she cries .."Please don't make us bleed!"

After the Zombies broke up, keyboardist/songwriter Rod Argent formed his own band in 1969, which incorporated more classical, jazz, and art rock influences in accordance with Argent's musical training. The group's other members were guitarist/songwriter Russ Ballard, bassist Jim Rodford, and drummer Bob Henrit. Argent's first two albums, Argent and Ring of Hands, received a fair amount of critical acclaim, but their real breakthrough came with 1972's All Together Now, which contained the Top Five smash "Hold Your Head Up"; In Deep produced a minor hit in "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You," which was covered by Kiss in 1992. By 1974, Ballard had developed his songwriting talents enough to leave for a solo career (Three Dog Night had a Top Ten single in 1971 with his "Liar," from Argent), and was replaced by guitarist John Verity and string player John Grimaldi. Without Ballard, the group lost its focus and indulged its tendencies toward extended art rock passages and improvisational solos to somewhat excessive levels. Argent broke up in 1976; Rodford joined the Kinks, while Argent himself recorded several solo albums and became a record producer, working with Tanita Tikaram, among others.

Promoting the Duty Now for the Future & Freedom of Choice albums respectively. I remember when DEVO first appeared on DKRC in 1979. Like many of the episodes I watched it with my Dad. The spastic, quirky movements of the band, along with the some times atonal quality of the music, made an impression to say the least. My Dad sat quietly through the whole performance. When it ended my Dad stood up, shut off the TV and asked, "You listen to these guys son?" I replied "Yeah Dad I have both their records." My Dad looked at me and said, "Now I know You smoke dope."

This is a great performance and should make a fine addition to any DEVO fan's collection.

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to adjust the volume and re-edit some track marks. No EQ or noise reduction was used. I seperated all the tunings and false starts from each track so that you could listen to just the songs if you so wish. I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps because the DVD had lossy audio.

This DVD is said to be dress rehearsals for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, and seems so with there being no real audience. It is known that some bands were filmed with no audience present and then the audience was edited in later. This was confirmed by Kansas, who were on Kirshner Records. The band released their Rock Concert performance with their Sail On Box Set and talked about the filming in the intro to the DVD footage. So this could actually be a show taping. At the end of the last track the director thanks Ambrosia then tells the crew to prep the stage for John Cougar as the audio fades. They retake a few songs because of technical difficulties, if it was a dress rehearsal they wouldn't need a retake of  Your The Only Woman because of a faulty drum mic. So I really think this is an actual taping that the audience will be dubbed in. Either way it's a pretty cool glimpse behind the scenes of Don Kishner's Rock Concert.

I went to the CD store for the first time in a couple years (since moving into my new house, it took some time getting organized). I spent some money on some new silver CD bootlegs. Each was about $17 US. I took them home to rip them for posting and it turns out that the record company used MP3 based sources for their releases, hence they are lossy and I encoded them to MP3 320kbps.

This is the first of three new CD's to be posted this week. This one is a classic from early in the career of Rush. Neil Peart had only been in the band for about 4 months when this show was recorded to promote Rush's first tour of the USA.

Our first post from REO Speedwagon post at The New JDP comes from their 1977 appearance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. The band was promoting the release of their first live album Live: You Get What You Play For. REO's star was on the rise, the next 6 albums would keep REO on the charts well into the 1980's. Their biggest success will come in 1980 with Hi Infidelity. That album would reach #1 on The Billboard Hot 200 and stay there for 15 weeks. 6 singles would be released and all 6 charted. One of the then more controversial performances on Kirshner, the New York Dolls performance didn't go over well with the California audience. The crowd noise is dubbed from a Rufus and Chaka Kahn performance that same evening that was a lot better received. The Dolls were promoting their second Mercury album Too Much Too Soon but included tracks from both LP's. Mercury would drop the band from their roster shortly afterwards.

Formed in 1971, the Dolls got there big break when Rod Stewart invited them to open for his London show. Sadly, original drummer Billy Murcia died of accidental drowning shortly after the gig, when he passed out from a combination of drugs and alcohol. After auditioning Marc Bell (later Markey Ramone), they chose Jerry Nolan and the line up that would influence/kick start the New York Punk Rock scene was complete. 2 albums later and the Dolls would fray and unravel under a haze of drug addiction and disillusion.

David Johanson would go on to a respected solo career, and to perform as Buster Poindexter (earning him his biggest hit with "Hot, Hot, Hot"). Arthur "Killer" Kane would struggle with addiction to emerge a clean and sober member of the Mormon Church. He passed away from leukemia at the age of 55 on July 13, 2004. Johnny Thunders would go on to form The Heartbreakers with Jerry Nolan earning punk legend status before dying from an overdose of heroin and methadone at 38 in New Orleans on April 23 1991. Jerry Nolan would pass at the age of 45, on January 14, 1992 from a stroke brought on by bacterial meningitis.

David Johanson and Sylvain Sylvain continue to tour as the New York Dolls to this day.

This is the latest addition to my Don Kirshner's Rock Concert DVD collection. The DVD is made from a pre-broadcast source. The audio was pretty good but I brought the high end up a little, as it was hard to hear Stewart Copeland's high hat, which is an essential part of the bands sound. As to the performance, the band plays around with some of the arrangements to great effect. Sting's soaring vocals are a little road weary but still sound good. I must admit I missed this performance when it originally aired so to have it now is pretty freakin' cool!

I downloaded this from an ftp in 1998. The site had Deep Purple and related bootlegs. The sound is fairly good and the Dregs were on fire during this performance. I have others that sound better but  this recording is kind of a personal favorite since it is the first Don Kirshner audio that I had in my collection. This a very enjoyable show so add it to your Kirshner and/or Dixie Dregs collection.

A great set from Frank & Co. This is the third Marino show on this blog I've never heard a bad performance from the man. Last time I seen him the show was around 3 hours long, no opening act just Frank, no set break just 3 hours of guitar heaven. A great performance from The Steve Miller Band, with really good sound. "Living in the USA" has a voice over in the first few seconds, it's over before the first verse. "Space Cowboy" has a different arrangement, and "The Joker" is done acoustically solo by Steve. Of particular note is the early performance of the as yet un-recorded "Fly Like An Eagle", worth the price of your internet connection itself. The DVD also had The Raspberries on it as well, but I just couldn't sit through that part to encode it. Not my cup of tea, to me they sound like something marketed to young teen girls, ie Shaun Cassidy, David Cassidy, Bay City Rollers, et al. Sorry don't mean to offend any of their fans, just an opinion.

2 great performances from early in Foghat's career, including an 11 minute version of "I Just Want To Make Love To You". Also of note is the rare live recording of "Nightmare". Bassist Tony Steven's would leave the band early in 1975, due to his dislike of extensive touring.

I have a few Don Kirshner shows that I will be posting. This one is a little muddled but listenable. All the DVDs that I will be ripping for these shows are from old VHS tapes that have been made into DVDs. The tapes of course fade with age so some sound is lost, I won't post any of the bad ones.

A fine set of performances from Rare Earth. This is after lead vocalist, drummer Peter Rivera had left the group. Rare Earth brought in Jerry La Croix formerly of Edgar Winter's White Trash, and Blood Sweat & Tears to sing. "Frosty" Eugene Smith-Frost replaced Rivera on drums in 1974. Chet McCracken replaced Frosty in 1975, but would leave by 1976 to join The Doobie Brothers.

Rare Earth was the first act signed to Motown's rock label, although not the first white act signed to Motown, that honor goes to The Rustix. They were however the first all white Motown act to have hits. Motown named their rock imprint Rare Earth Records. This surprised the band since they had only suggested it as a joke. Rare Earth was the opening act for the first California Jam. Rare Earth's cover of The Temptations "Get Ready" was their biggest hit landing at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, The Temptations version only hit No. 29. Their cover of "(I Know) I'm Losing You" landed at No. 7, The Temps version hit No. 8.
