Our Roots Of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Series brings us to one of the reasons why Thrash Metal bands play fast. It was the Punk Rock influence. Hardcore Punk Rockers Black Flag were one of the biggest. For me it was Black Flag, Dead Kenedys and The Plasmatics. The Misfits play a hand in it as well as The Meatmen. I remember when I first heard Black Flag. I was in High School studying art prepping to become a High School Art Teacher. That didn't happen because of my music career, but that has no bearing on the story. I had a 3 hour commercial art class and our teacher signed us up for a scientific study on how music affects learning. We were allowed to listen to whatever music we brought in. The class across the hall listened to nothing but Classical Music and the control group listened to none. I have no idea of the study's results, it didn't interest me then. We did however like the teacher said bring in whatever we wanted to listen to. A friend in the class said he was going to bring in some Hardcore Punk to see if the teacher would play it. It was a Black Flag 12 inch record with like 4 songs per side. The teacher noted it didn't have a speed marked on the label. He asked my buddy what speed, and he said he wasn't sure. The teacher first played it on 33 then on 45. It was meant to be 45 but hell I thought the slower speed sounded great. When it was played at 45 I flipped out, I was a Black Flag fan for life. This recording is from the last Black Flag show, they broke up in the van afterward. This was my only chance to have seen Black Flag. I didn't make the show (didn't even know they played). My band Psychosis was headlining Blondie's that night (we sold out). Hey I still get to hear it though thanks to a lucky taper who caught lightning in a bottle.

For our next segment in our Salute To Progressive Rock Band's we have Coloseum II with Guitar Legend Gary Moore. Coloseum II was a continuation of sorts after Coloseum broke up. Coloseum drummer Jon Hiseman felt that the public wasn't quite done with the band so he formed a new line up. The music this time was all instrumental with a Jazz Fusion style. They released 3 fabulous albums but sales just didn't come their way (some people just have to catch up to music). The band broke up, Gary Moore went back to Thin Lizzy, Don Airy to Rainbow. Jon Hiseman would reunite with the original Coloseum in the 1990's. The band on this recording doesn't sound like it would splinter in another year, they sound great. You should definitely download this show.

Another great show from Rosebud's Chicago collection. Rosebud, like many others, knew of Chicago because of their Radio Hits & MTV videos when I met her. After we married and my music collection moved in (she freaked out at the size of it) she learned of the Immortal Terry Kath . We have seen Chicago in concert every summer since then at Pine Knob Amphitheater. On the date of their 30th straight year appearing at Pine Knob they issued special shirts for the event. They also played one of the longest sets I have ever caught them play. But I digress, The Terry Kath era of Chicago, in my opinion, is the best the band sounded. If you own Chicago Transit Authority re-listen to the Terry Kath penned song "Introduction". Terry Kath's soulful voice and great guitar playing are just the half of it. Each player in the band is given a small solo section to literally introduce you to the players. The awesome thing about these solos, Terry Kath wrote the too! He wrote each soloists solo specifically to show off each players talent. In the early days of Chicago, Peter Cetera has often said, the members would always play to each other's talents. If Robert Lamm wrote a song but thought Peter Cetera would sing it better it was done so. That's why Peter Cetera sings Robert Lamm's "25 Or 6 To 4" or Terry Kath sings James Pankow's "Colour My World". That's why a lot of Chicago fans feel the first 9 albums are the best.

This is one of the many shows recorded for The Road To You, the Pat Metheny Group's 1993 live album. I have no idea what songs were used from each date and could find no info. This is a great sounding recording from a fabulous concert. The band is playing at peak performance. At the beginning of the show Pat assures the audience they will hear the songs they want to hear because they plan on playing a long time. The band then proves Pat to have understated it, this show is two and a half hours long! The audience definitely get their money's worth and more. So all my Pat Metheny fan friends, sit back with a nice glass of wine, turn the stereo to a nice volume and enjoy!

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to adjust some volume issues and smooth out some transitions between tracks. The DVD audio was lossy so the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps with Trader's Little Helper. Some sources are a little muddy but the whole recording is an enjoyable listen from beginning to end.
