Disc One is the same show as the classic Deep Purple bootleg Ritchie's Blues. It's listed as an audience recording but it is actually a soundboard recording. "Kneel And Pray" is an early version of "Speed King" which will soon be recorded on the In Rock album. "Child In Time" is pretty much the same song that will be recorded for In Rock but of course stretched a little bit here. The "Paint It Black (Rolling Stones)" is done in an instrumental form basically using the main theme of the song as a vehicle for Ian Paice's drum solo. The song will remain in the set until "The Mule" is recorded for the Fireball album. "Mandrake Root" fades just as things are getting started. The important part is the "Wring That Neck" track being included here. It is usually left off uploads because it is thought to be on the New, Live And Rare release. The version of "Wring That Neck" on that album is actually from the Deep Purple's opening set from The Royal Albert Hall during the Live With London Philharmonic Show. The same live tracks from the American Powerhouse compilation release.
Disc Two is a passable audience recording from Deep Purple's tour of Germany in 1970. It's of course a great performance as MK2 had not started to splinter yet. The recording of and tour for the In Rock album is regarded by most members of the band as a time when everyone was in harmony. You do get the full versions of "Wring That Neck" and "Mandrake Root" both almost a half hour each. The interplay between Jon Lord's organ and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar was already developed from 3 years of touring with the MK1 line up. On these performances it was the driving force as the new members Ian Gillan & Roger Glover found their area in Deep Purple's live shows. Ian Gillan's voice would become another lead instrument in the show. Roger Glover had the hardest task of them all. He would hold down the rhythm as Ian Paice plays drums in a much faster pace than most other drummers of the day.
I am so glad that there are so many Deep Purple bootlegs out from all eras. My first chance to see any live Deep Purple was on the California Jam TV broadcast when the MK3 line up was on tour for Burn. My first chance to see Deep Purple live in person was with Tommy Bolan in the band when they played in Detroit. I thought they lacked the energy of the Burn line up, of course we know they were all done with Deep Purple by then. Some of my first shows were seeing classic bands in a state of flux. Deep Purple MK4, Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die Tour, Journey on their first tour with Steve Perry, Foghat after Rod Price left, Ted Nugent with Charlie Huhn, Aerosmith on the Draw The Line Tour. I didn't catch the Deep Purple MK2 line up until the reunion in the early 1980s.
