Only known FM recording of Deep Purple featuring Joe Satriani on guitar. Knocking At Your Back Door is missing on most versions of this show.

History:
This line-up came about after Richie Blackmore left the group during the European tour in November 1993. Richie had not wanted to reunite with Ian Gillan. Gillan had left Purple to be replaced by Joe Lynn Turner of Rainbow. Turner did one album and tour before the record Lord, Paice, Glover and the record company strong armed Richie into doing a 25th Anniversary LP & Tour with Gillan. Richie was actually bribed with $250,000 by the record company to do the reunion. The tour was very successful and The Battle Rages On album well received, but Richie's heart wasn't into it so he bailed out.

Joe Satriani stepped in to cover the Japanese dates but continued on to do a summer Europe tour. Joe was actually asked to join Purple after the tour. Reports conflict as to why Joe didn't stay. Joe says his contract as a solo artist would not permit it. In an interview later the members of Purple stated that although the live chemistry was there, Joe couldn't jell with the band in a writing context. Former Dixie Dreggs/Kansas guitar player Steve Morse was selected some time later and has remained in Purple since. Richie does Celtic folk music with his wife in Blackmore's Knight. The kind of music that you would hear at a Renaissance Festival.

Ian Gillan – lead vocals, percussion, harmonica
Ritchie Blackmore – guitar
Roger Glover – bass
Jon Lord (R.I.P.) – keyboards
Ian Paice – drums, percussion

Disc One is the same show as the classic Deep Purple bootleg Ritchie's Blues. It's listed as an audience recording but it is actually a soundboard recording. "Kneel And Pray" is an early version of "Speed King" which will soon be recorded on the In Rock album. "Child In Time" is pretty much the same song that will be recorded for In Rock but of course stretched a little bit here. The "Paint It Black (Rolling Stones)" is done in an instrumental form basically using the main theme of the song as a vehicle for Ian Paice's drum solo. The song will remain in the set until "The Mule" is recorded for the Fireball album. "Mandrake Root" fades just as things are getting started. The important part is the "Wring That Neck" track being included here. It is usually left off uploads because it is thought to be on the New, Live And Rare release. The version of "Wring That Neck" on that album is actually from the Deep Purple's opening set from The Royal Albert Hall during the Live With London Philharmonic Show. The same live tracks from the American Powerhouse compilation release.

Disc Two is a passable audience recording from Deep Purple's tour of Germany in 1970. It's of course a great performance as MK2 had not started to splinter yet. The recording of and tour for the In Rock album is regarded by most members of the band as a time when everyone was in harmony. You do get the full versions of "Wring That Neck" and "Mandrake Root" both almost a half hour each. The interplay between Jon Lord's organ and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar was already developed from 3 years of touring with the MK1 line up. On these performances it was the driving force as the new members Ian Gillan & Roger Glover found their area in Deep Purple's live shows. Ian Gillan's voice would become another lead instrument in the show. Roger Glover had the hardest task of them all. He would hold down the rhythm as Ian Paice plays drums in a much faster pace than most other drummers of the day.

I am so glad that there are so many Deep Purple bootlegs out from all eras. My first chance to see any live Deep Purple was on the California Jam TV broadcast when the MK3 line up was on tour for Burn. My first chance to see Deep Purple live in person was with Tommy Bolan in the band when they played in Detroit. I thought they lacked the energy of the Burn line up, of course we know they were all done with Deep Purple by then. Some of my first shows were seeing classic bands in a state of flux. Deep Purple MK4, Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die Tour, Journey on their first tour with Steve Perry, Foghat after Rod Price left, Ted Nugent with Charlie Huhn, Aerosmith on the Draw The Line Tour. I didn't catch the Deep Purple MK2 line up until the reunion in the early 1980s.

This is a Request from our friend Andy, so hear you are my friend! This great show from Whitesnake comes from when the band was still quite young. The set actually still has 2 MKIII Deep Purple tracks in it. "Might Just Take Your Life" wont last too many tours but "Mistreated" still pops up in Whitesnake setlists. Anyway after 2 solo albums David Coverdale
formed Whitesnake. At first the band was billed David Coverdale's Whitesnake but Dave stressed it was a band not a backing band. The band would release 5 Heavy Blues inflected Hard Rock albums. In 1984 there came a change in the music. The Blues inflected Hard Rock evolved into a Commercial Heavy Metal sound. This happened with the Slide It In album. Actually it came with the American version of the album. The album was not only remixed to have a heavier sound but parts were actually re-recorded. Guitar and bass parts were re-recorded by John Sykes and Neil Murray respectively. Both are great players and have recorded some awesome music but the change hurt a lot of original core fans. The bands transformation to a full on Los Angeles Hair Metal sound was completed by the 1987 self titled album. The fans Whitesnake lost were replaced by new ones, Coverdale's gamble paid off. The 25th Anniversary Version of Slide It In contains 8 of the original UK mixes (got it), the 35th Anniversary version includes them all (have to have it).

Another show from Whitesnake for Rosebud's Tribute To Her Favorite Singers. This one is from the 1980's Hair Metal era that most of their America fans know of. I like this era of the band but for me I like it more when David Coverdale sings in his proper range (He forced his voice to hit notes it shouldn't be reaching for. He ended up paying for that later as his voice started to give out on tours). Rosebud & I have caught only one Whitesnake show together and this was late in the 1990's and Dave's voice sounded real good. He didn't hit the real high notes on some songs but sounded real good on all the material. This boot is a great addition to your Whitesnake collction

Rosebud's Salute To Her Favorite Singers keeps moving on with a show from David Coverdale and Whitesnake. Rosebud was already a fan of Whitesnake's 1980's output when I met her. From me she learned of Whitesnakes more Bluesy Hard Rock of their early records. She also learned about the Deep Purple MKIII era from me. She fell in love with the sound of Glenn Hughes & David Coverdale's vocal trade off. Burn is now on her list of favorite albums. This recording from Dave and The 'Snakes comes after the release of the Snakebite EP (not released in the USA). The EP was actually Whitesnake's official debut release. Coverdale's first 2 LP's were solo albums with The White Snake Band as his backing band. This is a great look at David Coverdale's career after leaving Deep Purple. The band's sound is a little far from the Platinum Selling 1980's Hair Metal Monster that it would become.

Ritchie Blackmore assorted string instruments
Candice Night vocals, tambourine, assorted wind instruments

justdave's notes:
I ripped the audio with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to edit some of the track marks. I tried to edit as much talk as possible from the actual music tracks. I also tried to smooth out some spots where the audio was a little hot, to the point of clipping. No EQ or noise reduction was used. The DVD had lossy audio so using Traders Little Helper, the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps.

Ritchie and Candice live streamed these 2 shows from their home studio for their fans during the Covid-19 quarantine. Ritchie drinks beer and jokes while Candice interacts with the fans on line. They actually take requests from the live audience as well as pick songs themselves. Ritchie suggests Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changin'" saying it's from his idol. That and "Fires At Midnight" are the only songs played both shows. The tracks titled "New Song" are songs from Blackmore's Night's up coming album that they did not announce the names of. "Vacuum And Dust" is a Covid-19 parody of the Joan Baez song "Diamonds And Rust". The idea came from a phone call with Whitesnake's David Coverdale. David commented that since the lockdown started all he's done is vacuum and dust.

This one is for aking who asked if I had any Blackmore's Night. As far as soundboard or Pro recordings was this DVD. I had not ripped it yet so I did this rip a few days ago. The rest of my Blackmore's Night recordings are audience recordings. I will have to review them to see if any are worthy of posting here, we are kind of picky.

Rosebud's Tribute To Her Favorite Singers continues with a double shot of Ronnie James Dio. Both recordings are 3 CD sets as well. This one is from Rainbow's rehearsals for their 1976 world tour. It's been called a for fanatics only collection because of it's shortage of complete performances. I say anyone curious about how the band prepped for a show should check it out. It's a free download of a very expensive bootleg CD, but if this one isn't for you show #2 from this double shot will be.

The second in Rosebud's Tribute To Glenn Hughes is a great show from Glenn's South American Tour playing a Deep Purple MKIII Set. When asked why he was out touring playing these songs he said (and I paraphrase here) "Someone has too". I agree wholeheartedly. At one point there had been talk of reforming the Deep Purple MKIII line-up. Ritchie Blackmore however said it would be hard to convince Ian Pace to do it. Lars Ulrich of Metallica offered to play if Pace wouldn't. The idea was put to rest when John Lord passed away. Personally as a Metallica fan (pre-Black Album sorry) I would rather see another drummer do the job. Lars can not swing like Ian (all drummers say Ian's swing style is hard to cop). That being said this backing band kicks ass. I wish Hughes & Coverdale would tour this material together but damn does Glenn do a great job with out him. It's interesting to hear him sing songs Dave took the main lead on like "Sail Away" & "Mistreated".

This post serves up a package of 2 different versions of the recording. Both versions start with the originally posted FM Master recording. The first version is edited to remove as much DJ chatter as possible without losing music. The second version is also remastered as well as edited. It makes for a fine package, added is the cover art that BigO magazine used when they hosted the original master at their site.

This is a very large file set, both flac & MP3. The flac CDs have been uploaded separately, the MP3 was uploaded in 2 parts. All parts will unzip separately as well.

Recorded as an intended Black Sabbath album or a Tony Iommi solo album, that's still in contention but these sessions stayed unreleased for a long time. Tony Iommi finally re-recorded most of it (keyboards & drums) for the DEP Sessions CD. Dave Holland's drum tracks were wiped because Iommi wanted to distance himself from Holland. Dave Holland (of Judas Priest) had been convicted of molesting a mentally challenged 17 year old boy in 2004. The boy had been taking drum lessons from Holland. Dave maintains he is innocent. Dave Holland was living in A Fonsagrada, Spain when he died January 16, 2018. It was later reported that he had died from lung cancer, Holland was 69. Additional keyboards were also added by Geoff Nichols & Mike Exeter before the official release.

This is the first in a couple Rosebud Picks in tribute to another favorite singer of hers Glenn Hughes. Like me Rosebud feels the Glenn Hughes-David Coverdale era of Deep Purple is very underrated by a lot of Rock & Rollers. Some Purple fans love Deep Purple MKIII some don't. Personally I am a fan of all Deep Purple line-ups but one. The line-up with Joe Lynn Turner, if Ritchie Blackmore wanted to make another Rainbow album he should have reformed that band. I'm not a big fan of Rainbow's Joe Lynn Turner era either but that's just my opinion (it's not that I hate it either just my least favorite I guess), Rosebud loves it (LOL).

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to smooth out some volume issues and smooth out some of the song transitions. No EQ or noise reduction was used. The waves were nencoded to MP3 320kbps because the DVD had lossy audio.

Nice compilation recording, you get some Classic Hard Rock (Black Country Communion, Thin Lizzy) , Stoner Rock (Kyuss Lives!, Queens Of The Stone Age) , Rockabilly (Brian Setzer), Punkabilly (Reverend Horton Heat), Alternative Rock (Paul Weller, Bright Eyes, The Avett Brothers, Band Of Horses) , and Primus (who are a genre unto themselves!)

Rod Evans vocals
Tony Flynn guitar
Tom De Rivera bass
Geoff Emery keyboards
Dick Juergens drums

This is the Mexican Television news report on the band. The report is in Spanish and there is only one full track. The guitarist and keyboard player even tried to look like Ritchie Blackmore & Jon Lord respectively.

From thehighwaystar.com:
After leaving Captain Beyond in late 73, just as he finished recording the Sufficiently Breathless album, Rod Evans changed his life and went to work in a hospital for a couple of years, until he was approached by some unscrupulous management company, that specialized in rip-off reformed bands with big names, who had just been taken to court by the owner of the name Steppenwolf (John Kay), for running a bogus band named Steppenwolf, with no original member (reportedly original member Goldy McJohn was initially in that band, but left). To make a long story short, that "Bogus Steppenwolf" had a guitarist, named Tony Flynn and a keyboarder, named Geoff Emery, who were house musicians of that dodgy management company. However, as they got sued by John Kay, that rip-off management decided to go for another big name, to make a fast buck: Deep Purple. In order to find an excuse for using that name (Deep Purple) they tried to get Nick Simper involved, who wisely enough refused to get drawn into such a (ad)venture, and then they found Rod Evans. Looking for a change, and probably not as wise as his former mate Nick Simper, Rod Evans thought that this was his chance for a comeback and went for it. More than that, he got involved with some very bad people from that rip-off management, and was used as a tool by that company: making Rod Evans the only shareholder, and therefore sole risk-taker of that "Deep Purple 1980" venture, Rod Evans was the only person, who could be taken to court.

It was not long before Rod Evans got sued, as he was the only person receiving booking fee royalties and all other band players and management were on the wages list. To set the record straight here, it was Tony Edwards and John Coletta who sued Rod Evans (reportedly Richard Blackmore and Bruce Payne were the driving forces...): they filed an action in Los Angeles Federal District Court in June 1980 seeking an injunction to prevent the band from using the name "Deep Purple" and asking damages under the provisions of the Lanham Act, a federal statute governing trademarks and trade names. Eventually the court decision was made that Rod Evans had to pay 672,000 US$ for damages caused by using the name "Deep Purple" without permission. The outcome seems that the sole rights to the name "Deep Purple" reside with the original managers. It seems that the agreement requires 4 original members (whoever these may be?) to use the name...

Jon Lord (in March 98 via e-mail): "AFAIK Rod had enough of the Music Business, and became a paramedic. Of course he was not that naive - he thought he'd try it to see what happened, but try to imagine what would *you* have said when it all went wrong? I only blame Rod for being silly. He should've known it was going to be difficult to get away with a fake DP. After all - he was doing it in public."

Ian Paice commented (after the DP show in Halle an der Saale 18.03.96): "We didn't make that money, it went all to the lawyers involved... The only chance to stop that band was to sue Rod, as he was the only one receiving money, all others were on wages... Surely Rod did get involved with some very bad people!" However, as much I agree that Rod Evans did something wrong by using the name "Deep Purple" without permission, there should have been another way to clear that matter. Needless to say Rod Evans doesn't have that money and will probably be in debt for ever. Therefore he also will never be able to perform again, as DP(O) would be able to grab any money that Rod Evans would make in the music industry. This leaves the DP(O) in a bad light, that's for sure. Evens' greed is no justification for acting like this. There should have been another way, that's for sure and AFAIK all those white collar gangsters, who used Rod Evans as a tool to feed their cash machines are doing quite well these days.

Jon Lord went on to say this in April 98: "It was not just Rod who was sued - it was the organization that was behind the fake Deep Purple who were most responsible and it was they who were hit with the greatest part of that 'very large sum of money.' In respect of that money - what price would you place on your reputation and on the right of the public not to be sold something under false pretenses? And also you should be aware that these people were informed on several occasions that they were breaking the law, and yet they continued to do it. Suing them was the last option there was to try to stop them. I did not enjoy having to appear in court against a guy I'd once worked with - but he who steals my purse steals trash; he who steals my good name takes everything I have."

Yes Jon, but it seems that at the end of the day, only Rod Evans had to pay the price and all the puppeteers are rehabilitated...

Brian O. reports in Feb. 99: "The Bogus Purple were managed by Steve G., a slick rip-off promoter, who ultimately got in a lot of trouble. He was mentioned in the John Kay Steppenwolf autobiography... Today I called Steve G., the unscrupulousness agent of old Bogus Steppenwolf and also Bogus Deep Purple, which he denied... The talk we had by phone was fairly tense... He didn't seem to want to talk about the old days, said it was "a long time ago", and that John Kay is a nice guy, a good singer... But why is anyone interested in what happened so long ago. He did admit that they won the right to the name Steppenwolf, yet said Goldy and Nick never got a dime. I still don't know if he means royalties... or got paid when they played the bars between 77-80. At any rate, he was a dickhead to me... when I brought up Deep Purple 1980 w/Rod Evans he really got pissed off... did not want to talk about that. Steve G. made everything sound like it was water under the bridge, and old shit, was trying to make me feel like a fool for asking about it... He is rude. He did not want to make the connection between Tony Flynn in the Bogus Deep Purple and the Bogus Steppenwolf... finally he said that John Kay's book is full of lies!!!".

It seems that nobody, who should know the facts behind the curtain on the Rod Evans and Deep Purple 1980 case, wants to talk about this really, so you make it out yourself, who are the guilty parties...

This website however, presents the story of Rod Evans and Deep Purple 1980 trying to shed some light into "what really happened...", while a lot of other websites simply try to ignore it. It seems that this band never got much press coverage, probably also due to the fact that DP(O) was applying pressure on the press, so you get the idea of how they looked on stage here for the very first time by looking at the on stage photos.

Over the years I have heard various stories about Rod Evans, working in a gasoline station or in a dog-breeding farm. Whatever may be true or not: it is a shame that a great vocalist like Rod Evans had to end that way. Remembering him singing "Starglow Energy" or "Lalena" (to name a few only), Rod Evans will always be a hero to a lot of people, no matter what else he did!

If anyone out there reading this article knows about Rod Evans, reportedly he is living in the San Fransisco area, please let me know and let him know that there are still some people out there, whom I know well, who still remember him and would like to hear from him. No matter what he is up to now, he will not be forgotten, that's for sure.

Info on members:

ROD EVANS: Detailed information about Rod Evans you can find at Wikipedia, Hartmut Kreckel´s Captain Beyond website or at The Highway Star site

TONY FLYNN: Born in 1955, Tony lived in Hollywood in 1980. His full name is Tony Romano Flynn, his great-grandfather´s family (Romano) was Spanish, his mother and her ancestry are from Denmark. He got his first guitar at the age of nine years, about his musical inspirations he mentions B.B. King, Howard Roberts, the flamenco guitarist Carlos Montoya or Paco De Lucia. In September 1977 he replaced guitarist Kent Henry in the "new" Steppenwolf band, where he played together with original keyboarder Goldie McJohn and bassist Nick St. Nicholas. He stayed in the band until the spring of 1978 before he parted, to be replaced by Ruben Raven. He joined the Steppenwolf band again in October 1979 and stayed there until early 1980. Tony planned to record a solo LP in Mexico with Rod Evans, Goldie McJohn and Geoff Emery, but this never happened.

DICK JURGENS: Coming out of family fame, Dick went to high school in Sacramento, California, in the early 1960´s. His uncle managed the "Sacramento Memorial Auditorium", so Dick was given frontrow seats and backstage passes to all the shows that came around. Being just a young man, Dick got to meet many of the Big Stars there like The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Dick´s drumming hero Mitch Mitchell, he also met original Deep Purple there in their early days. For the time of about eight months to a year Dick was also part of the "new" Steppenwolf band when Nick St. Nicholas hired him out of L.A. in 1978.

GEOFF EMERY: Not many things are known about the keyboardist Geoffrey W. Emery, but he also was a part of the "new" Steppenwolf band: In the spring or summer of 1978 Goldie McJohn left Steppenwolf and was replaced by Geoff, who stayed there until early 1980. In different formations he played with both - Dick Jurgens and Tony Flynn - there. In 1978 ten tracks had been recorded for an album in Los Angeles, CA, but never released. Emery and Dick Jurgens were members of the band in those recording sessions. Geoff seems to have been working in the music industry for some independent record label.

TOM DE RIVERA: Reports say that Tom won some audition when the "new" Deep Purple band was searching for a bass player. After the 1980 court decision it seemed that he disappeared from music business. Latest news say that Tom played together with a band in South Orange County, California, in 2006. In February that year they recorded two songs. Tom is playing bass and doing the lead vocals.

While Ozzy Osbourne was recording Bark At The Moon, Black Sabbath had regrouped with Ian Gillan on vocals and a newly sober Bill Ward back on drums. The band set up shop at Manor Studios to bein working on the Born Again album. The group wasn't supposed to be called Black Sabbath, instead it was to be a new Supergroup. The label and management pressure to use the name Black Sabbath was too great and the band gave in. Bill Ward left after the album was finished unhappy  to be back in Black Sabbath without Ozzy. Ian Gillan would leave after the tour to rejoin Deep Purple. Bev Beven of Electric Light Orchestra played drums on the tour. During tour rehearsals the band practiced Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water and E.L.O's Evil Woman but only played the Deep Purple track live.

This recording comes from the final tour of Deep Purple Mach II. The band had gone through a couple reunions already when their label talked them into a 25th anniversary tour. Ritchie Blackmore actually had to be given a large monetary advance to agree to it. During the tour, on November 17 1993, Ritchie walked out in the middle of a show. Joe Satriani was used to finish off the tour, and it looked like he would join the band. That didn't work out but former Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse did and continues to this day. Jon Lord retired from Deep Purple in 2002 to pursue a solo career. Don Airy who had worked with Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne and Rainbow was asked to join the group. Jon Lord was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July of 2011. He had been recieving treatment, but Jon Lord died on July 16, 2012 from a pulmonary embolism, he was 71.

A short recording from Trapeze, the tape shows a little age but is listenable. I haven't seen too many bootlegs from Trapeze myself so this is a must have for fans. Glen Hughes left Trapeze after the 1973 tour to replace Roger Glover in Deep Purple MKII. Mel Galley, who died from esophagus cancer in 2008, would go on to join Whitesnake from 1982 thru 1984. Mel had to leave Whitesnake in 1984 due to a terrible hand injury which kept him from playing guitar for a few years. He later invented an apparatus called the claw to aid in his return to guitar. Dave Holland would join Judas Priest in 1979 and would play with them until 1989. Dave is started working on a tell all book in 2006 while still in prison for sexual assault (a crime he still denies), he is out of prison since 2012.

Decent soundboard recording from the Born Again Tour, though not quite as pristine sounding as Worchester or Reading Festival boots. The Reading Festival show has been released as a bonus disc to the anniversary re-release of  Born Again.

Musicians are always getting drunk together and saying .."We should do a project together".. this short lived line up (one LP, one tour) of Black Sabbath was the result of one such night. Not meant to be Black Sabbath but a soupergroup with an identity of it's own. Gillan had disbanded his solo group under the pretense of losing his voice, but actually to re-form Deep Purple. The legal battles that needed to be fought with ex-Purple vocalist Rod Evans put the Purple reunion on hold (see story below), so Gillan had time for the Iommi/Butler/Gillan project. Many things factored into Gillan's decision to end the collaboration after the world tour. An eleventh hour decision by the record company to call the project Black Sabbath, the final (terrible) mix of the album, the horrible Devil Baby cover art, and a practical joke perpetrated by Iommi and Butler at the Reading Festival. They thought it a funny idea to set Ian's tent on fire, Ian was still inside at the time. The call came from Deep Purple's lawyers and Ian bolted.
