I recently joined the MetalMadness ed2k link tracker. It hosts nothing but True Heavy Metal Music. Glam and Neo-Metal bands are not hosted there. Most of the stuff is commercially available material most of which is hard to find. I personally have been a fan of the Metal Underground since my teen years. Back when if you wanted a Motörhead, Iron Maiden or Venom record you had to order it from England at a record store or out of the back of a magazine. When I bought Iron Maiden's "Women In Uniform" E.P. I had to convert my American currency To English currency then mail it off to a company in England that advertised in the back of some Heavy Metal music magazine I read.

In the early days of Thrash Metal's surge from below of course I listened to Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax but another band that caught my ear early was Overkill. Named after the Motörhead song of course. I have been to quite a few Overkill concerts and they always are a killer live act. This collection I downloaded from the MetalMadness tracker is a collection of shows recorded for the radio. That includes a very early show from 1986 when Thrash Metal was as poison to radio as Hardcore Punk but Overkill made it onto the radio way back then in the long long ago before times....

Recorded while Sly & The Family were promoting the Fresh album, the band was just 2 years away from breaking up. Sly and the rest of the band had been heavy users of cocaine and PCP for years and it was taking it's toll. Live gigs were on the decline due to the fact that members wouldn't show up for gigs. They would pass out during gigs, and Sly had a habit of just leaving in the middle of shows. After a really bad show at Radio City Music Hall, which sold only one eighth of the tickets forcing the band to scrounge up the funds to return home, they called it quits.

This is the complete set from Black Sabbath at the first California Jam. It is however a little edited as some of Ozzy's on stage banter has been censored. Cannibis Confusion is regarded as the best sounding source of the recording however the boot Metal Mess contains the unedited stage banter. This comes from Rosebud's silver CD and is one of the first bootlegs I ever bought her. That's right I payed like $50 US for it, but now you won't have to.

This is a very interesting boot. It has very good sound quality and a fabulous performance from all involved. What makes it interesting is the band itself. Formed By Emerson & Palmer with Robert Berry, 3 only released one album 3 To the Power of Three. There was a very short tour, with some shows being billed as Emerson & Palmer, no mention of Robert Berry. They were also augmented by a second guitarist and a backing vocalist. The show focused on the LP's material with a couple E.L.P. instrumentals thrown in, as well as The Byrds "Eight Miles High" and The Four Tops "Standing in the Shadows of Love". As for the original material itself, it is a mix of Prog and AOR. 3 disbanded in 1989 when Emerson and Palmer reunited with Greg Lake for the Black Moon release. Berry went on to a failed attempt by Steve Howe to replace Steve Hackett in GTR. Berry's current band Alliance is composed of Gary Pihl from the band Boston on guitar, David Lauser from the Sammy Hagar Band on drums and Alan Fitzgerald from Night Ranger on keyboards.

The sound on the first song "Hard Driver" is a little sloppy as the radio and the stage sound man try to quickly adjust the faders, it does improve. This would have been the day to be at this annual festival. The main stage headliner was Stevie Ray Vaughan. Also on the bill was The Stray Cats, Dave Mason, and Molly Hatchet touring for their last album to feature vocalist Danny Joe Brown. I personally never attended a Badlands concert. I actually attended a few shows they were the opening act for but missed them each time. That is why I love having the shows that I do. It's odd, my least favorite era of Ozzy Osbourne is with Jake on guitar. I saw Ozzy twice with Jake. The Bark At The Moon tour with Motley Crue & Ratt. Then The Ultimate Sin tour with Metallica. On Bark At The Moon the keyboards were just too dominating in the mix, and Ultimate Sin was too Hair Metal sounding. I love Jake's playing with Badlands, he's perfect for this Bluesy Hard Rock sound.

Billy Preston, sometimes called The 5th Beatle, was a integral part of a few major rock acts. The Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Mahalia Jackson, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and many others owe credit to Billy's keyboard talents. The Beatles actually gave him equal billing on the "Get Back" single releasing it as The Beatles & Billy Preston, and yes he was on that rooftop for that famous concert. This is a great although short set from Billy, show casing some of his hits. Billy dances, sings , and plays his heart out.

Preston had battled kidney disease in his later years, brought on by his hypertension. He received a kidney transplant in 2002, but his health continued to deteriorate. He died on June 6, 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona, of complications of malignant hypertension that resulted in kidney failure and other complications. He had voluntarily entered a drug rehabilitation clinic in Malibu, CA, at the suggestion of guitarist Is'real Benton and suffered pericarditis there, leading to respiratory failure that left him in a coma from November 21, 2005. His funeral was held on June 20 at the Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, California, where his remains were interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California.

There still remains an unreleased CD of Beatles covers that he had been working on for several years before his death. Many tracks from this CD were previewed by him at The Fest for Beatles Fans shows in the years before his death.
