Our next Sunday Morning Jazz post features yet another guitar player John McLaughlin. This show teaming John McLaughlin and Chick Corea comes before their Five Peace Band recording. John McLaughlin's influence is cited by guitar players in Jazz, Heavy Metal and Rock music. Heavy Metal shredders love his million notes per-minute playing style which has become a signature style of Thrash, Speed, Death and Black Metal. Frank Zappa loved his playing. Carlos Santana loved John's playing so much he recorded and toured with him.

justdave's notes:
I ripped the DVD audio with DVD Audio Extracter. I the used Goldwave to re-edit some track marks and reduce some very high spikes in volume. The DVD I used was sourced from a video tape, the is a small amount of tape flutter in spots, however this recording is a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

I do not know the names of Joe's backing musicians. He is using a line up with himself as the lone guitar, a bass player, two back up singers one male, one female, who both double on percussion, a drummer, and a 5 piece horn section.

Not one bit of Joe Walsh's set has been commercially released. This is his entire set.

There have been a few commercial releases from the 1983 US Festival.

Triumph, Judas Priest, Quiet Riot, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and The English Beat have all been released on there own.
Steve Wozniak's company has released a 3 DVD set called The US Festival 83 Days 1-3.

Day one features The Clash, Men At Work, Stray Cats, Divinyls, & The English Beat.

Day Two features The Scorpions, Triumph & Judas Priest.

Day Three features U2, Stevie Nicks, Missing Persons, & Quarterflash.

There is also a single DVD compilation called The Us Festival Days 1-3 available. This one features a couple songs from INXS, Divinyls, The English Beat, Stray Cats, Men At Work, The Clash, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, Berlin, Quarterflash, U2, Missing Persons & Stevie Nicks.

justdave's notes:
I used DVD Audio Extractor to rip the waves. I then used Goldwave to re-edit some track marks and to adjust the volume. No EQ or noise reduction was used.

Many famous guitar players took lessons from Joe Satriani before he made it. The impressive list that follows feature players of Thrash Metal, Progressive Metal, Hard Rock, Alternative Rock, and Jazz Fusion.

Steve Vai (Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake, & Solo Artist), Larry LaLonde (Possesed, Primus), Rick Hunolt (Exodus, Slayer) , Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Andy Timmons (Danger Danger, Session Musician), Charlie Hunter (The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Charlie Hunter Trio, Garage a Trois), Kevin Cadogan (Third Eye Blind, Solo Artist), and Alex Skolnick (Testament, Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Ozzy Osbourne, Alex Scolnick Trio)

He has recorded as a solo artist since 1986, and has numerous gold and platinum albums. Toured as a member of Deep Purple. Been a member of Chickenfoot, and recorded guest sessions with Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult, Spinal Tap, Brian May, Ian Gillan, Dream Theater, Stanley Clark and more...

Keeping with the theme of half of our last posts..here is another guitar hero. Steve Vai got his first job in the business transcribing Frank Zappa music which would ultimately end up as The Complete Frank Zappa Guitar Book. This was while still attending The Berklee College For Music. He played with Graham Bonnet's Alcatrazz,  He played with David Lee Roth from 1985-1989. He replaced Adrian Vandanberg for Whitesnake's Slip Of The Tongue album and tour, and has released many critically acclaimed solo albums. Today's Heavy Metal scene is full of guitar players who have been influenced by Steve Vai.
