Side A : KB-694 A AD 8-23-87 MCR JOE

Known Faults:
- Visual inspection shows some minor vinyl flaws that should be easy to edit around if they cause any type of noise. For the age of the vinyl it looks nice.
- Side B looked to be pressed slightly out of round. Fortunately there seems to be no problems when the LP was played.
- Record set was not mastered very well. The different segments all seem to have their own volume settings. This was dealt with in the editing process.
Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone at the beginning of Side A for radio stations to set output levels before broadcast. It was not encoded. It's also not listed on cue sheet.
- King Biscuit put 2 locked groove show promos at the end of Side C they have been included.
- King Biscuit Flower Hour pressed the albums with the commercials half as loud as the music and voice overs. This was dealt with in the editing process.
- Mason Ruffner released Mason Ruffner Live in 1999. It contains the song "Gypsy Blood" and the notes say that it was recorded at The Living Room, Providence, Rhode Island, USA July 1987 (from Mason Ruffner.com) PDF included in extras folder.
- Draftervoi found some articles from newspapers that show Jon Butcher played the Hollywood Palace July 16, 1987 (included in extras folder). He also played The Living Room twice around the time that Mason Ruffner did. Mason Ruffner is reported to have played The Hollywood Palace close to the same time as Jon Butcher but no info was found to confirm that
Editing Notes:
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System prior to playback.
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LP prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable balanced: Needle Tracking, Azimuth, Pressure & Antiskid Dialed In: Soundcard stereo field maximized: Goldwave always set to record while filtering any offset:
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.
- Some minor flaws may still show after all the work, we are after all working with vinyl sources.
- Raised volume of the commercials 50% to equal the volume of the show.
- Evened out the volume of entire show, but did not normalize/maximize audio.
Other Notes:
- I went into this project not knowing Mason Ruffner's music at all. I would say he writes Southern Blues with a touch of Louisiana Swing and some Rock-A-Billy thrown in for texture.
- Mason Ruffner writes music that lets the notes and vocals breath while Jon Butcher has a more dense sounding style.
- Although Jon Butcher is clearly influenced by Jimi Hendrix, he shows influence in his song writing by Robin Trower and Frank Marino. "Holy War" could be a Frank Marino song the way the keyboards interplays with the guitar. Both were heavily influenced by Hendrix but each had their own way of crafting a song. Stevie Ray Vaughan is also heavily influenced technically but sounds nothing like Jon Butcher, Frank Marino or Robin Trower.
- Jon Butcher shows some more of his influences by playing Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". You can hear the R & B influence in his music like Robin Trower (Check out Trowers album with Maxi Priest).
