I have been looking for another Van Halen soundboard that dosen't sound like crap other than The US Festival boot. I mean just the David Lee Roth era not the Sammy Hagar era. Sammy's time in Van Halen is well documented with a few nice sounding boots as well as a live album. The David Lee Roth era is pretty undocumented in comparison. Almost every soundboard bootleg that I have come across to me sounded like crap. This is a soundboard I have been waiting to hear. I have actually heard some bad copies of this show so was surprised. It sounds pretty good, however this brings up a different discussion.

David Lee Roth has always been a sloppy live vocalist. I wouldn't put him in the category of say present day Vince Neil. Dave could enunciate the words that came out of his mouth, when remembered. Vince Neil has recently been fired by a once again re-united Motley Crue for his sloppy singing. Vince has always been a little sloppy but he's gotten bad. Check him out on Youtube some embarrassing stuff. David Lee Roth wasn't always too drunk to remember the words ala US Festival 1983. He danced around so much that he wasn't singing on cue or missing verses. Now I'm not saying that Sammy Hagar era Van Halen was better live than the Roth era. That's like comparing Syd Barrett Pink Floyd to Gilmour/Waters Pink Floyd live, two very separate beasts. Sammy and David are two very different performers. Now my 1st chance seeing Van Halen was opening for Black Sabbath on Ozzy's last tour with them in 1976. I don't remember Dave being sloppy that night but I do remember Black Sabbath sounded stale after Van Halen's set. The rest as they say is history...

Rosebud & I have had the pleasure of catching TOOL in concert a few times together. We saw them play at Ozzfest two nights in a row. Both nights they had King Buzzo from The Melvins guest with them. They would get into this long jam in the middle of their set. A large silver grey dome would come down and cover the whole band as the jam would wind up in a fury. A bunch of lasers were then shot at the dome that reflected them like a disco ball all over. Now we had seats in the pavilion, the same seats for both nights, box seats for Rosebud's job. The same couple was next to us both nights and the girl grabbed my arm both nights and said "My God what are they trying to do summon the mother ship?". The second night I said to her.."You asked that yesterday...I think they are the mothership."

This great performance comes from TOOL's appearance on the Alternative Rock Tour Lollapalooza 1993. I think it's a little too ironic that Layne Staley of Alice In Chains guests on "Opiate". By this time in Alice In Chains career Michael Starr had already been kicked out of the band for his growing drug habit. In 1994 Layne Staley would enter rehab for heroin. After getting out the band entered rehearsals for their delayed tour. Layne started using again during rehearsals, the tour was canceled. Layne's final live performance would be only 3 years later. July 3, 1996, Alice In Chains opened for Kiss. After the show Layne overdosed on heroin ending up in hospital. The band never toured again and Layne died from an overdose of heroin and cocaine on April 5, 2002.
