For our installment this week in our History Of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal we have a compilation from the leaders of Progressive Metal Dream Theater. Dream Theater embraces both the aggression of Heavy Metal and musicianship of Progressive Rock. Extended solo passages and grand lyrical themes are the rulers of the day. Championing the musical tendencies of such influences as Rush, Genesis & Yes, Dream Theater have carved out a very successful career for themselves. A very loyal following has been amassed and rewarded for that loyalty by the band allowing fans to tape live shows. The band practices a don't see don't tell policy on tapers. If they don't see you they don't care. If you are not selling bootlegs but just trading with others, then no harm no fowl. Dream Theater has also helped to bring Progressive Metal to the masses by crafting package tours with other's from there genre such as Queensryche, Fates Warning & Tiles to name a few. This package is a compilation of 3 separate tours of Japan. Every recording is example of exactly why Dream Theater fans are so loyal...They give the fans 100% every minute of every gig!

"Top 40" in your town wasn't the same as in my town. There was the NATIONAL USA Top 40,
but that's not what we heard...we heard what was on the local radio, and that may have been very different.
For example... consider Jerry Jeff Walker. He never had a Top 40 hit. But he was a hit in certain markets.
I direct your attention to the wonderful ARSA website at http://las-solanas.com/arsa/
This great site compiles LOCAL charts of hundreds of radio stations. Do you remember those little radio surveys distributed by every radio station at your record store back in the 60's and 70's? Well, this site compiles them into a database.
To see all the data, you have to register, but go ahead and do it...they don't send you a bunch
of SPAM if you sign up.
Now, the data isn't perfect, they only track what's been uploaded, so there are gaps, and those surveys fell out of style so the data is better for the 60's and 70's isn't much use after that.
For a guy like Jerry Jeff Walker...with NO Top 40 Billboard Hits...search under the ARTIST category, and you find 168 radio surveys for "Mr. Bojangles," and 30 surveys for "L.A. Freeway." You can sort by chart position: "Mr. Bojangles" was Top Ten in San Francisco, "L.A. Freeway" was NUMBER ONE in Sacramento, CA on two stations (KNDE and KROY) and was Top 10 in San Francisco and Dallas/Fort Worth.
Where I grew up (Northern California), Jerry Jeff actually had hits.
Anyway... here's a Live From Gilleys syndicated radio show of Jerry Jeff Walker & the Lost Gonzo band playing at Gilley's ("the worlds largest night club") back in 1985. The vinyl was a bit rough, but I cleaned it up as best I could. I've included a scan of the very inaccurate cue sheet, and the scarred and defaced record label. Why write on the label AND attach a sticker? Pick one or the other, not both.

This weeks installment of our Tribute To Progressive Rock Bands is from The Moody Blues. The Moody Blues brand of Cosmic brand of Progressive Rock grew from a base of R & B and Psychedelia. Together with mind expanding lyrics and pseudo-symphonics the Moody's have crafted a very recognizable sound. This sound and style has carried them from the 1960s to the 2000s with a very loyal following. The bands haunting 1967 single "Nights In White Satin" is still in Heavy Rotation on all Classic Rock Radio Stations and is one of the most recognizable singles from the Classic Rock & Classic Prog-Rock eras. The album it came from 1967s Days Of Future Passed was an experiment in the modern stereophonic sound & recording techniques. This experiment grabbed the attention of the 1960's Pop/Rock audiences now experimenting with mind expanding substances. As the growth in experimentalism in mind expanding substances & spiritual expanding teachings grew so grew the experiment in Progressive Musical Soundscapes. The two would forever be linked.
