Wonder Funk, was there ever a better live band from Motown? One could rightfully say The Temptations were equally as great live. Their vocal harmonies, spot on dance moves put them in a live category with a lot of greats. Rare Earth could also jam on a song forever live and you wouldn't get bored. I've been lucky enough to have seen The Temptations, Rare Earth and Stevie Wonder in concert. Wonder Funk is on that list of "...if you could go back in time for one band in concert, who would you see?" The MC5, The Rationals & Wonder Funk are right up there for me...There is one show I tell my friends about to this day and they all say they wish they could have been there. Stevie Ray Vaughan was the opening act for Joe Cocker. Both played headline length sets, then for Joe Cocker's encore they played together for about a half hour...Those are the type memories I hope I bring back to people with this blog. Anyway ramble ramble ramble get on with the music JD.....

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to raise the volume and edit track marks. No EQ or Noise Reduction was used. No remixing or remaster done. The tape ends abruptly at the 6:03 mark of "Superstition". I did not fade the ending of the tape preferring to listen to the last note. Even though the DVD has a Lossless audio codec it was made from an MP4 source, so the audio still comes out lossy. I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper.

Rosebud & I share a great love for all things Motown. We've seen The Temptations with The Four Tops many times together. When our ticket agent (yep I had a ticket agent on call then) called and said that we could get some Stevie Wonder tickets before the public sale we said hell yes. I called my buddy Snot (his nickname lol) to ask if him and his then wife would like to go. They said yes, I told them I can get hill tickets for 75 US dollars (he was playing Pine Knob Amphitheater). They agreed so I purchased the tickets. The night of the show Rosebud was ill, but she told me to go without her. Stevie Wonder tickets are hard to get. In the Detroit area they sell faster than a 1 penny rock of crack to Tyrone Biggums. I went to grab Snot and his wife before the show. They wanted to follow me because they hadn't been to Pine Knob before. Snot's wife had on a mini skirt and spiked heals. I reminded Snot we had lawn tickets and his wife snapped. She wasn't going to sit on the hill for 75 dollars. I told her she could use the tickets for trade in value at the box office for better seats if any were available. I then told her pavilion seats started at 250 dollars. I also said if you don't use the tickets you're still paying me for them. They went and my God it sucked having her complain about everything. The distance to the bar. Her heals digging int the dirt. Sitting in the grass with a skirt. The mosquitoes were biting her legs. Finally Snot said he was taking her home, 5 songs into Stevie's set no less. They left, there had been this couple in front of us smoking weed and enjoying the night. After Snot and his wife were gone the woman turns to me, hands me a fat joint and said "I thought that bitch would never leave". So Rosebud's Tribute To Her Favorite Singers continues with Stevie Wonder.

This is a classic bootleg and have to keep the classics alive. This was recorded by Motown and intended as a live album release but for some reason it was shelved by Stevie Wonder before it could be released. It's thought that Stevie considered the show to be sub-par for some reason and work discontinued on the project. You can judge for yourself if Stevie and Motown should get out the master tapes and give this one a legitimate release.

In 1979 Stevie Wonder played a 6 city tour to promote Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants. There are only 2 known recordings of this small tour, both are from the Pasadena show, both audience recordings. The album was a soundtrack to the documentary film The Secret Life Of Plants. Stevie tried to convey the complex information and imagery from the film in the lyrics and music. The film was barely shown but Motown released the soundtrack anyway. A single was also released from the album, "Send One Your Love" reached #4 on the Rock and R&B Billboard Chart. The album itself also reached #4 on the same chart. The album contained some very experimental music for Stevie, and is now considered to be one of the first New Age Music releases.
