My Tribute to Progressive Rock Bands continues with Italian Prog-Rockers Premiata Forneria Marconi.
Milan, Italy, not a city that Rockers around the world would think of as a hot bed for international Rock bands. Actually that may just be a USA Rocker's point of view. Don't hold that against us. The US record companies for a long time have treated Non-US bands like something that snuck in while the door was open. I mean they cut up the first two Classic Beatles albums to make one for America. Promotion was another thing. I didn't hear about Premiata Forneria Marconi until maybe 3 years ago. I guess it was hard to figure out a way to market Italy's first international band. A Prog-Rock band that incorporates flute, violin, Classical Music and Traditional Italian Melodies. I can just imagine a record company PR man tearing his hair out screaming.."What the hell? A flute...violin, Italian folk melodies...A name you can't pronounce after 5 doobies...I still don't know how to market Focus now this!!" After a pile of cocaine the record goes out without promotion. I really have no idea how many times PFM toured the USA. I do know however that I missed out on some great live music. Oh and I know the name translates to Award-Winning Marconi Bakery.
