JustDave's Notes:
- A big thank you to my fellow members of The Collective Of Live Music for the continued support and all the recordings (and we're just getting started!).
- This one actually fills a gap in the King Biscuit Flower Hour Collection of Sam Elliot's Mustache and the collection of The Collective Of Live Music as a whole.
Known Faults:
- A couple spots that went thump could only be lessened, however I am not going to point them out because you may not notice without instructions like "play track 86 backwards and you will hear the thump just before the secret message telling you how to find Jimmy Hoffa".
- Before cleaning Side C, which is the major section of the Steppenwolf show, seemed to have been played less having more dust than the Point Blank parts of the show which were a lot cleaner.
Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone on Side A for the DJ to set levels before broadcasting the show, it has not been encoded.
- There are two locked groove show promo beds at the end of Side B. Each with a voiceover by Bill Minkin, one with Point Blank music the other with Steppenwolf music.
Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.
Other Notes:
- When people talk about the Classic Era Of Southern Rock you will hear the names The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Charlie Daniels Band, Blackfoot, ZZ Top, Molly Hatchett and The Outlaws. There are lesser spoken of bands that have been almost lost to time like The Johnny VanZant Band, Atlanta Rhthym Section, Sea Level, Stillwater and one of my personal favorites Point Blank.
- When editing this show Draftervoi was working on a few Southern Rock shows as well. What struck me about when conversing with Draftervoi about his research is how much Southern Rock was a regional thing. The Southern Rock bands just didn't cut through the noise in some cities and states here in the USA. The Classic Era Southern Rock bands I know that had a career in The World Markets are The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, The Outlaws, Blackfoot and The Marshall Tucker Band. Which is the Southern Rock Classic Era Legends.
- When Point Blank played Detroit for their The Hard Way Tour they closed their show with Deep Purple's "Highway Star" which amazed some of the Detroit Rockers who had came out due to the song "The Hard Way" being played on one of the FM stations we had back then. Actually I think they played The Center Stage which was actually in Canton Michigan. The fact that a Southern Rock band would rip through a Deep Purple song just stunned some of the Detrroit audience.
- Michigan, and especially in the Greater Detroit area, it was the Auto Factories that made it possable for Southern Rock to have an audience here. So many Southerners of all races came to Detroit for jobs in the huge Automotive Assembly Industry. Brought form the South was Country, Blues, Soul, Rock a'Billy and Jazz. The Mid-West was a market custom made for Souther Rock.
- Point Blank guitarist Rusty Burns died from lung cancer February 19, 2016, he was 63.
- Point Blank guitarist Kim Davis died by a self inflicted gunshot October 18, 2010 at the age of 58.
- The song "Nichole" was Point Blank's biggist hit making #20 on Billboard Magazines Rock Tracks and #39 on Billboards Hot 100.
- This was Point Blank's first album and tour cycle with new vocalist Bubba Keith. Original vocalist John O'Daniel left the band after the tour for The Hard Way. John O'Daniel died from cancer Novmber 17, 2018 at the age of 70.
- Point Blank's drummer Peter "Buzzy" Gruen is the only original member of the band still alive
