Known Flaws:
- As with all King Biscuit shows I've edited so far, the commercials had a marked difference in volume to the music.
- Volume of commercials was adjusted to match the body of the show. This causes excessive needle noise.
- No real vinyl flaws were visually apparent upon inspection. During the initial cleaning process, my record brush brought up the most dust that I have seen on a record in some time. It cleaned up very well visualy but in some small spots if listened for it did cause some fuzz not audible on a casual listen, it has to be listened for.
Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone for setting volume levels and balance before broadcast. This has not been encoded.
- There are 2 locked groove show promos at the end of side A. With Loverboy "Turn Me Loose" as background music: one with a voice over by Bill Minkin, one just music for Local DJ voiceover. These have been encoded and moved to the end of the recording.
- Side A run out groove mistakenly scribed as KB standing for King Biscuit instead of BOB standing for Best Of The Biscuit.
Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LP prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the record prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set.
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.
- A High Pass Filter with an initial cutoff of 50khz with a Static Steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise during commercials. This needle noise being due to the low volume of the commercials and having to raise said volume to match the music and voiceovers.
Other Notes:
- The Dire Straits portion of the show was first broadcast February 1, 1981 on a King Biscuit Flower Hour split with Thin Lizzy. The show was also broadcast by KSAN-FM California.
- The Loverboy portion of the show was first broadcast April 26, 1981 on a King Biscuit Flower Hour split with Humble Pie.
- Dire Straits rhythm guitarist David Knopfler left the band during the recording sessions for the Making Movies album.
- The song "Eastbound Train" was the B-side to "Sultans Of Swing".
- When I first heard Dire Straits single "Sultans Of Swing" I thought it was a new Bob Dylan track. I called my local radio station to request the song and was informed it was Dire Straits not Bob Dylan. I was also informed that many other people besides me had called in thinking it was Bob Dylan.
- Loverboy bassist Scott Smith died in a boating accident when a large wave washed him overboard off the coast of San Francisco. His body was never found, he was age 45.
- There was no sophomore slump for Loverboy. Their second album Get Lucky was a bigger seller than their first and had more radio "hits" as well.
- I have edited a lot of shows but I have to say that Loverboy's drummer is one of the most solid I have heard. You never hear a stick click or rim hit when he plays a roll and his bass drum foot is really steady and never wavers in power.
