It's a nice sounding boot from the Prince Of Darkness. I like this line-up as well, I've seen them at a few Ozzfests, they are a great live unit. They used to play a medley of Ozzy era Black Sabbath songs in the middle of "Suicide Solution". It was kind of Ozzy's idea, he told the band that he didn't want a featured guitar solo. Hence the medley was invented. It had a funky beat ala Faith No More or Infectious Groves, Joe Holmes is Ozzy's under rated guitar player for the way he played Ozzy Sabbath material across those funky rhythms. Everyone was into it so hey Ozzy was right on that. The guitar solo did come back after Zakk Wylde returned to the fold.

One could argue that the set list is a little stale for this tour. The only non Ozzy live staple is "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". It is not a usual choice for Ozzy since the high pitch vocal is hard on/for Ozzy's voice. Ozzy was on the road a lot between Ozzmosis and Down To Earth. Six years between studio albums is a long time. I do remember Ozzy and the band playing around with the sets because of the lack of new material. I remember one Ozzfest the keyboard player (not sure which one) was visible on stage, stage right front, in the top of a skull. The set list that night (I'm sure every night of that tour) was keyboard heavy. I swear as I was lighting a big doobie the show opened to "Diary Of A Madman". It was quite some time ago so it's blurry but I am pretty sure they actually played it. None of Mine and Rosebud's friends were there that night so I can't verify the memory.....

- "Rock And Roll" starts when the song is almost over.
- Jimmy Page breaks a string during "Over The Hills And Far Away" which delays the start of "Misty Mountain Hop".

- Recording is missing "Moby Dick" and what ever the encore may have been.

It's been a little while since we posted any Led Zeppelin on the blog so here you are. This is a pretty good sounding recording from Zeppelin's 1973 Tour of North America. I haven't listened to any shows from this tour in a while so that's why I picked this show. The fact that "The Song Remains The Same" is not the show opener was weird but that's the way the 1973 tour went. I think it may have changed by the end but I may be wrong. John Paul Jones also keeps his solo vehicle, "No Quarter" to 12 minutes, kind of short. It remains my favorite song from the Houses Of The Holy album. The acoustic part of the show has also been side lined for this tour. No worries though "Dazed And Confused" is it's normal half hour beast.

The one thing that bothers me about Led Zeppelin is Jimmy Page & Robert Plant's complete disavowing of their influence on Heavy Metal. They point at some of the mindless dibble that posers put out during the Heavy Metal domination of the industry. As always there are a lot of bands that jump on a band wagon and put out sub par music. Happened to the Grunge and Alternative scenes. Rap and Country Music have not been immune to the same over saturation. But I digress, if Led Zeppelin had not been, Heavy Metal may very well have ended up the mindless dibble they pointed out. Because of Led Zeppelin Heavy Metal/Hard Rock has melody and texture. The light and heavy ethos of Zeppelin created the power ballad. Heavy Metal music can have texture if you will, such as Metallica slowing to a crawl in the middle of "Master Of Puppets" only to speed up to a face melting end. Every guitar player I worked with in my decades in Heavy Metal has given Jimmy Page as much credit as Tony Iommi. I don't want to forget that Led Zeppelin may have helped to invent Progressive Heavy Metal as much as Rush (since Rush was influenced by  Led Zeppelin), with "Kashmir" alone (not to mention "Achilles Last Stand").
