Everyone who follows the blog knows I love Jazz bands playing songs from non-Jazz songwriters. Jazz Guitarist Bill Frisell has worked with his present quartet for long enough that they didn't figure out the arraignments to the songs before entering the studio. As Bill Frisell said in an interview they "..just went for it." The album they were recording was All We Are Saying ... A Tribute To The Music Of John Lennon. The songs, though arraigned for a Jazz Quartet, are not unrecognizable. The band let the melodies of the original songs guide the arrangement. I think lovers of John Lennon solo and Beatles material will love this show, so download it, it's not a Jazzy Freak out. Jazz lovers that doesn't mean this is Muzak. It's Bill Frisell, enough said......

The first of today's Sunday Morning Jazz offerings is a huge one with something for every Jazz fan. A celebration of the many phases of Miles Davis' career.

This marathon tribute concert lasted over 12 hours. This 8 CD set contains every performance from the show with out all the breaks in between resulting in over 9 hours of performances.

It's been remastered by Emperor Nobody so Thank You to him and to the original tape and uploader. The FLAC file set is HUGE! The MP3 file set is overly large. Because of this I have separated the files into smaller downloads. Each zip file should open by itself. The box set is 8 CDs: The FLAC is divided into 4 Downloads, 2 CDs each. The MP3 is divided into 2 Downloads 4CDS each

This CD was part of the Jazz Italiano series. This series created by Luciano Linzi, artistic director of Casa del Jazz of Rome, was produced in collaboration with publishing group "la Repubblica/L'espresso". The series was published for four consecutive years, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009. The recordings are all original live productions. These CDs were not for sale, but were distributed in Italy with the weekly magazine "L'espresso".

With the response I got from the last Jazz Pink Floyd Tribute I posted from Maria Pia De Vito, Nguyên Lê & The NDR Big Band I figured every one would like this one as well. Great arraignments done by Rita Marcotulli and a wonderful performance by all, highly recommended.

I love hearing Jazz bands take on the songs of non-Jazz artists. Bob Dylan couldn't be farther removed from Jazz (in my humble opinion). Absolutely Sweet Marie was formed to examine the music of Bob Dylan through the eye of a Jazz Composer. For this show the band is promoting their 2nd CD Another Side Of Blonde On Blonde. I'm not a huge fan of Bob Dylan's work (please no hate comments). I own 1 Greatest Hits CD and a CD that was being given away for free when ladies bought lingerie at Victoria's Secret. I also have Bob Dylan & The Band's Before The Flood and Basement Tapes albums on vinyl. That being said I love this performance. If you love Bob Dylan you should download this one to check out the arrangements the songs are given. If you love Jazz this one's for you too!

I also have a great show by The Kieth Jarrett Trio performing the music of Bob Dylan available on the blog here if you are interested in hearing a Jazz Piano Trio's take on Dylan.

On offer today for Sunday Morning Jazz is a great Tribute to John Coltrane. This is a really nice sounding show. The performance is top notch of course. See Freddy Hubbard, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones to me are well know for their talent. Now Sonny Fortune and Reggie Workman are names that I have seen pop up playing with other Jazz Stars I like. With the playing here and on others I have heard I am going to delve into their work some. That's how I became a fan of Arild Andersen, noticing his name and saying now I have to check this guy out on his own. Everyone on this recording plays great. Anyone attempting to play Coltrane arrangements has to play great or it's not going to happen. I think these Gentlemen do a damn good job, You are going to enjoy this one, I just have a feeling...

I have broken up this large file set into 4 zip files. CD's 1 & 2, CD's 3 & 4 etc. Each zip file will open separately because I found some visitors were having problems with the multi-part zip files.

justdave's notes:
I used Goldwave to convert the MPEG4 to a Wave 16bit/44,1khz. I then used Goldwave to edit the tracks. No noise reduction, EQ, or remastering was done to the recording. The video had lossy audio so it was encoded to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper. I edited the show as it was broadcast, a continuous 5 hour broadcast. If you want to burn CDs you will have to find the right spots to edit your CD1, CD2 etc.

Taylor Hawkins, drummer for The Foo Fighters, died March 25, 2022. Early toxicology reports suggest that a drug overdose may be the cause, but no official ruling has been made as of this date. The band was scheduled to play the Estéreo Picnic Festival in Bogotá, Colombia but had to cancel. The stage was turned into a candle light vigil.

This recording is from show 1 of 2 shows planned to honor Taylor. The 2nd was on September 27 in Los Angeles, California. It's a great show with a lot of different performers, some legendary, some not quite there but on their way. Check out Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age/Kyuss/Them Crooked Vultures fame singing David Bowie's "Let's Dance" and Sir Elton John's "Good-bye Yellow Brick Road" and nail it! Chevy Metal & Ke$ha deliver a great version of T. Rex's "Children Of The Revolution". Brian Johnson & Lars Ulrich jam out some AC/DC classics. Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson using 2 different drummers to pull off some Rush tracks. Sir Paul McCartney steps up with Chrisse Hynde and deliver some Beatles while Brian May and Roger Taylor give us a bit of Queen.

I hope everyone enjoys this, it took a lot of work to get it together. Not sure if there are any other audio rips of this show out yet. T.U.B.E. offers the MPEG4 that I made the audio rip from, it's actually where I downloaded it. It's kind of a big file set, so It has been separated into 2 parts which can be opened separately.

As most of you know, I love Jazz Musicians playing Rock band's songs. This concert is a Tribute To The Song Writing Of The Beatles. It's a unique sound with piano, vibes, and trombone playing "Come Together", but rather enjoyable. This has become my new favorite tribute concert recording (they change with my whims of course). I recommend this one, no really I do.

Odin is yet another Progressive Rock band from England. Not sure how these guys didn't make it bigger than they did. They only recorded one album which was released in 1971. So live recordings  from the band are going to be very rare. We're pretty lucky that this show was shared on the net. Here the bands set is made up of 2 Frank Zappa covers, a Brian Auger song and one Untitled track which I do believe is an original. The band is tight and does a great job with the chosen material. I would say if you like Prog-Rock or Frank Zappa this ones a must have.

Great sounding Jazz Tribute To The Grateful Dead. The group has been together for some years and has had a few line-up changes but they always kick ass. There are a few shows in circulation, this one was my first taste of the band. You can't miss with members of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, & Dixie Dreggs. I don't really know much about Widespread Panic (didn't they have a radio hit in the 1990s?) but keyboardist Jimmy Hearing does an awesome job. Throw in guest appearances by Merl Saunders (the show's opening act as well) and Jeff Mosier, well you get the point. Download this awesome show now.

The second in Rosebud's Tribute To Glenn Hughes is a great show from Glenn's South American Tour playing a Deep Purple MKIII Set. When asked why he was out touring playing these songs he said (and I paraphrase here) "Someone has too". I agree wholeheartedly. At one point there had been talk of reforming the Deep Purple MKIII line-up. Ritchie Blackmore however said it would be hard to convince Ian Pace to do it. Lars Ulrich of Metallica offered to play if Pace wouldn't. The idea was put to rest when John Lord passed away. Personally as a Metallica fan (pre-Black Album sorry) I would rather see another drummer do the job. Lars can not swing like Ian (all drummers say Ian's swing style is hard to cop). That being said this backing band kicks ass. I wish Hughes & Coverdale would tour this material together but damn does Glenn do a great job with out him. It's interesting to hear him sing songs Dave took the main lead on like "Sail Away" & "Mistreated".

This post serves up a package of 2 different versions of the recording. Both versions start with the originally posted FM Master recording. The first version is edited to remove as much DJ chatter as possible without losing music. The second version is also remastered as well as edited. It makes for a fine package, added is the cover art that BigO magazine used when they hosted the original master at their site.

This is a very large file set, both flac & MP3. The flac CDs have been uploaded separately, the MP3 was uploaded in 2 parts. All parts will unzip separately as well.

Celebrating Of Dark Side Of The Moon features Jazz Arraignments for the albums songs. This performance actually includes a couple original compositions that were inspired by the album as well.
I previously posted another performance of Celebrating The Dark Side Of The Moon that was very popular. If you liked that one you want this one as well. If you didn't download the last post it is still available on the blog here.

All the Tom Petty Tributes that I have from 2017's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in one recording. The band Lampedusa is a Supergroup with Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, & Lucinda Williams every member takes a vocal on their track. Jamey Johnson performs "Southern Accents" & "Room At The Top" acoustic but his band joins him on "Mary Jane's Last Dance". The recording ends with Lucinda Williams also performing "Southern Accents".

justdave's notes:
I compiled this from different bootlegs in my collection. Quite a few bands have covered Jimi Hendix songs over the years. My choices are not meant to represent the best of these cover versions just ones that I like. The surprises out of the recordings showcased here would have to be Concrete Blonde's version of "Castles Made Of Sand" or Earth, Wind & Fire's cover of "Machine Gun". Some sources were lossy and some were not so I encoded everything to MP3 320kbps. All recordings were of soundboard quality (ie Pre-FM, FM & Soundboard). I tried to adjust the volume of the tracks so they were more uniform using Goldwave.

Hope you enjoy it, I have a couple similar projects in the works.

I think I downloaded this from Jazz Boot Experiment but I'm not sure. Jazz Boot Experiment is another great site for live unreleased Jazz shows from various artists. They are usually posted in MP3 320kbps and have a front cover for making a CD. This is another site that I recommend all my fellow Jazz fans visit.

This is a wonderful tribute to Jazz Great Tony Williams (R.I.P.).
