justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to edit some track marks. No EQ or Noise Reduction was used. No remastering or remixing was done. The DVD had lossy audio so I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper.

Amorphis is one of my favorite bands. I own every release and have loved every twist and turn their music has made in their Progressive Heavy Metal journey. I've been a fan since Amorphis released the debut EP Privilege Of Evil. Starting off as a very raw Death Metal band, Amorphis set out on a musical course that would see them evolving with every release. With their first full length Amorphis added elements of  Finish Folk Music, Progressive Rock, Doom Metal and Psychedelia to their sound. The album also featured lyrics based on the Finnish Epic The Kalevala. This lyrical style would continue through out there career.

At one point the band dropped the Death Metal elements and went full on Prog-Metal (with some great saxophone on the LP Am Universum). At another they adopted an Alternative Metal sound. After Lead Vocalist Pasi Koskinen left the band and new vocalist Tomi Joutsen took over the Death Metal elements returned. The bands sound now is an amalgam of every style they used in the past and more. This show is a perfect place to start if you never heard Amorphis. The bands name is perfect they always are shifting which has earned them a very loyal fan base. Enjoy!!

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to adjust some track marks. I also muffled a loud guitar cord pop at the end of a track. No other work was required on the wave files. Even though the DVD is marked as having a lossless sound option, the actual broadcast source is lossy. That being the case the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper.

Another great post for our Roots Of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal series. Finnish Progressive Metal Legends Amorphis chose their name correctly. The band was initially a Brutal Death Metal Band called Abhorrence. They released a demo called Disment of Soul before breaking up. Some of the members formed Amorphis a little after. The bands first release was a Melodic Death Metal album. The second album added a twist to the Death Metal with lyrics written based on an ancient Finnish Epic Poem, The Kalevala. They also added clean vocals and keyboards, as well as Finnish Folk rhythms. The band would continue to expand their sound with every album. Eventually dropping the Death Metal elements from their new material. After lead vocalist Pasi Koskinen left and Tomi Joutsen was hired they returned. They kept the clean vocals, keyboards, saxophone and flute as well. The bands still uses The Kalevala for inspiration as well. Amorphis has been a big influence on the Heavy Metal scene, expanding the boundaries of the genre. Think of Amorphis like Opeth but with shorter songs.

Nice sounding recording of a special show for Progressive Metal band Amorphis. The band plays a 30 minute acoustic set before plugging in for another 50 minutes. Of special note is the acoustic "clean vocal" version of "Sign From The North". The song  comes from Amorphis' debut album The Karelian Isthmus, which was a pure Death Metal album, the Progressive elements would come in later releases.

Not sure if this is a television or radio broadcast recording but the sound is really good.

This great sounding recording catches Finnish Progressive Metal act Amorphis on tour to promote their 7th studio album Eclipse. Eclipse was the first album to feature new vocalist Tomi Joutsen. Long time vocalist Pasi Koskinen left after the tour for the Far from the Sun release. The band had taken a direction where all traces of their Death Metal roots were purged from their music. The band's sound had progressed with every album, adding clean vocals, keyboards, and horns to the mix. With the addition of Joutsen the Death Metal elements resurfaced. The fans reaction was one of excitement driving Eclipse to #1 on the Finnish Charts. The follow up Silent Waters reached #3 while the next 3 releases all reached #1.
