The first of our special Veteran's Day posts is a great Sammy Hagar show. Sammy Hagar is a very patriotic person and the song "Remember The Heros" is his way of thanking those who have served. This show includes a great rendition of that passionate number. This recording has that fine Pre-FM quality that we all love. It is a little short but does get the air guitar going from the onset. I'm not sure where this was recorded. I at first thought that it was from The Checker Dome but after carefully comparing the two I decided no.

Van Halen played the Oakland Coliseum for two days so they could film live footage of the band for shows like Kirshner, Midnight Special, etc. According to the band only these 3 live tracks exist because of glitches during filming. However this doesn't sit well with fans because the show was filmed with multiple cameras not video taped. This means that every camera would have to of malfunctioned at the same time. This is believed to be imposable. It is believed the performances didn't hold up to the bands standards instead. This seams to be more probable as Dave could sometimes get a little too drunk to remember the songs. I refer you to the much bootlegged US Festival show for an example of this. So you get 3 live songs and an interview with David Lee Roth in between. The promo video for "Oh! Pretty Woman" was also aired but since the audio is the official album track it was omitted.

So another un-circulated Van Halen Soundboard surfaced at the Traders Den this year. This time from the last performance of the tour supporting Black Sabbath as the world was treated to their debut album. I might be a Boomer but at least I was there to see the Van Halen Stormtroopers take over the World one stage at a time. It's not very easy to explain to those who were not there what it was like to hear those classic Eddie Van Halen riffs for the first time. The way the man played was a revelation and a revolution when it came to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

Strung out and falling apart at the seems Black Sabbath didn't know what they had unleashed on the world. Nor did they understand that Van Halen was emulating their idols when Tony Iommi confronted them about "stealing Black Sabbath's show" guitar and drum solos were Sabbath's territory. Alex Van Halen has released a really good book on the days of Van Halen. Alex talks of how Van Halen would rush en mass to get side stage to watch their idols Black Sabbath every night. They wanted to emulate their idols not destroy them. They were heartbroken by Tony's accusations, having been starstruck the whole tour....

I promised You some rare Masters....This set of recordings from Van Halen's Legendary Hide Your Sheep Tour just surfaced at The Traders Den this week!! These 2 shows are very nice sounding soundboards. Hardly any audience noise is heard and you can hear everything going on on stage.

I will also say that David Lee Roth is in fine form on the 22nd but the 24th is a little bit drunker and slurring his words a bit. This is a classic Roth era Van Halen show. Van Halen always brought that Drunk At The Bar And Jamming Vibe onto those huge stages they took on tour. It was their stock and trade or modus operandi, it was what made a Van Halen show. It was an event, a traveling party that brought all the decadence that your parents warned you of, and you secretly wanted because of their warnings (Warning Labels Sell Records Thank You Tipper!!). Van Halen on tour in the 1980s was like The Rolling Stones on tour in the 1970s. You sat in the audience just knowing that back stage there was a Circus Of Unfathomable Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll Delights!

I have been looking for another Van Halen soundboard that dosen't sound like crap other than The US Festival boot. I mean just the David Lee Roth era not the Sammy Hagar era. Sammy's time in Van Halen is well documented with a few nice sounding boots as well as a live album. The David Lee Roth era is pretty undocumented in comparison. Almost every soundboard bootleg that I have come across to me sounded like crap. This is a soundboard I have been waiting to hear. I have actually heard some bad copies of this show so was surprised. It sounds pretty good, however this brings up a different discussion.

David Lee Roth has always been a sloppy live vocalist. I wouldn't put him in the category of say present day Vince Neil. Dave could enunciate the words that came out of his mouth, when remembered. Vince Neil has recently been fired by a once again re-united Motley Crue for his sloppy singing. Vince has always been a little sloppy but he's gotten bad. Check him out on Youtube some embarrassing stuff. David Lee Roth wasn't always too drunk to remember the words ala US Festival 1983. He danced around so much that he wasn't singing on cue or missing verses. Now I'm not saying that Sammy Hagar era Van Halen was better live than the Roth era. That's like comparing Syd Barrett Pink Floyd to Gilmour/Waters Pink Floyd live, two very separate beasts. Sammy and David are two very different performers. Now my 1st chance seeing Van Halen was opening for Black Sabbath on Ozzy's last tour with them in 1976. I don't remember Dave being sloppy that night but I do remember Black Sabbath sounded stale after Van Halen's set. The rest as they say is history...

Eddie Van Halen has lost his fight with throat cancer. He fought and defeated tongue cancer from 2000-2002. In this fight he had about a third of his tongue removed.  Doctors declared him cancer free. In 2019 we found out Eddie had been fighting throat cancer. This cancer took Eddie Van Halen on October 6, 2020, he was 65. Rest In Peace Eddie.

A nice recording of Van Hagar firing on all 4 cylinders. There is a great scene in the movie Airheads. The lead characters tried to figure out if a guy was a rock manager or cop. They asked him a few questions. One question they asked him was what side he was on in the great Van Hagar vs. David Lee Roth band debate. He answered that both had good songs. They immediately identified him as a cop telling him "wrong it's David Lee Roth." I did appreciate the Van Hagar stuff, but favored the first two Roth solo albums he made with Steve Vai. I mean after having Eddie Van Halen as lead guitarist, you had to go with Steve Vai, right? Anyway, Eddie Van Halen's guitar God status goes unquestioned - PERIOD! Granted he was playing more keyboards in the 80's, but his guitar parts are still pure Eddie. Also, you get Sammy Hagar playing lead on his solo tracks (included in the set) with Eddie joining in. That's a nice twin guitar attack!

Tracks 02-11 of Disc 1 are taken from the Gene Simmons produced demo tape. Recorded at Village Recorder Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Ladyland Studios in New York May 1976.

Tracks 12 through 24 of Disc 1 and Tracks 1 through 12 of Disc 2 are from the 1977 demo produced by Ted Templeman and Mo Ostin for Warner Bros. These demos were recorded in Los Angeles in late 1977.

Tracks 13 through 16 of Disc 2 are unused sessions and alternate takes.

A nice sounding recording of an awesome performance. This is a band that truly loves making music together and it shows in every note. Chad Smith was busy with the Red Hot Chili Peppers so Kenny Aronoff of John Cougar Mellencamp's band is filling in. His pounding style fits like a glove. The guys include a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" in the set of Chickenfoot originals. The band of course was touring to promote their second album Chickenfoot III. On an episode of That Metal Show Sammy Hagar stated that to avoid the second album slump they didn't release a second album and went straight to the third.

Triumph, Quiet Riot & Judas Priest have released their respective US Festival sets on both DVD and CD so their contributions to this disc set have been omitted.

The extent of Heavy Metal's ascendancy as a musical force became apparent on May 29, 1983 in Devore California. Until then, Metal Heads were gathered in the underground plotting our world conquest. Hated by the critics and shunned by major radio, Heavy Metal gained acceptance by the shear power of its fans. But on May 29, 1983, the world had no choice but to take notice - Heavy Metal had arrived on its own terms.

The numbers don't lie, Saturday's Show with Flock Of Seagulls, INXS, Men At Work, & The Clash drew nearly 300,000. Monday's show with David Bowie, U2, & The Pretenders drew roughly the same numbers. Sunday's Heavy Metal Day drew over 600,000 Headbangers. The critics had to pull their feet out of their mouths as the above named darlings of the music press were out shined by a bunch of guys in leather and studs!

Throughout its history, Heavy Metal was looked down upon by the music press. The fans were regarded as Stoners who couldn't understand what real music was. All the while Metal Heads knew the truth, that real music is what you feel and we didn't need some guy in a skinny tie telling us what was real. A quote by David Lee Roth used to hang on my wall when I was a teenager it said "... You know why all the critics like Elvis Costello, they all look like him!!"

Don't get me wrong I love all styles of music, Elvis Costello is a great songwriter, but in those days before Heavy Metal became accepted as a viable genre, as a fan standing against the critical tide with your fist in the air, it was a daily fight to keep your cool when some skinny tie new waver claimed The Knack were better than Black Sabbath.
