Nice but short acoustic performance from Cry Of Love. The band sounds great and seem to be getting along rather well. However in 1994 at the end of the World Tour for their first album Kelly Holland would leave the band. The band wouldn't release album #2 until 1996. For that album former Lynch Mob vocalist Robert Mason was recruited. We do have more Cry Of Love music posted on the blog here.

They were pretty popular, now's your chance to hear his playing in a more stripped down musical setting. From the Pat Metheny-esque beginning of "Jazz Nelson" to the frenetic McLaughlin-isms of "Dance Of The Comet" this show should prove to be a very pleasant listen.

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to raise the volume a little. No EQ, or noise reduction used. No remixing or remastering done. This is my first attempt at encoding anything in surround sound. The editing process on Goldwave was interesting working with 6 channels at once. I hope that I have achieved an enjoyable listening experience for all. I made the DVD from an MKV file downloaded from the net so I know the audio is lossy. Traders Little Helper's MPEG test said the audio was 100% CDDA. So I encoded the waves to Flac Level 8, the flac will most likely be banned as lossy if you try to share it at The Traders Den or other such trackers.

The MP3 format would not encode as surround sound just stereo. The format will not accept a 6 channel wave. I tried all the popular formats and only flac would encode as surround sound, so the MP3 is just in stereo.

This show is also part of The Salute To Rosebud's Favorite Singers. Christina Scabbia has a fantastic voice, very fitting to the Goth-Metal sound of Lacuna Coil. Rosebud and I first heard Lacuna Coil live at Ozzfest. We attended every Ozzfest they had in Michigan. If they had 2 days in a row, we went both days. It was 1 of the 2 years Crazy Town played. We always arrived when the gates opened so we could catch every side stage band. We saw Crazy Town get run off the stage 4 times. They played 2 years in a row. Each time they opened with "Butterfly". Each time they got pelted with everything the audience could throw, the power was cut, and the band left the stage. As a musician I felt bad for them. I however do not care for their music. I also felt it was really stupid of them to try and follow Slipknot the first year and Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society the second. I would have offered Zakk a 12 pack of beer and a fifth of whiskey to let me go on first. It would have worked. I remember Limp Bizkit had to follow Black Label Society after Zakk led the crowd in a chant of Limp Bizkit Can Suck My Dick. Fred Durst came out of the bands stage prop toilet and said "Fuck you we know we suck but you bought the record anyway". Detroit respects a band that fights back.

This Show Is For Our Friend Bud_e_luv_bomb For Putting Me On The Trail Of An Edge Of Thorns Era FM Broadcast From Detroit.

I introduced Rosebud to Savatage, I am a huge fan and yes I own every release on vinyl & CD. I have everything from The Avatar Demos to every Trans-Siberian Orchestra release. I have the original Combat label copies of Sirens and The Dungeons Are Calling. I had to "special order" them through Sam's Jams, a huge record store in Ferndale at Woodward & 9 Mile Road. The Mile Roads were named for how many miles they were from downtown Detroit. Like I said Sam's Jams was a huge record store. The original building is now converted to a strip mall with 15 smaller stores in it. If they didn't have it the world order it. They also would carry releases any and every local band that scraped enough money together to record. Damn I miss that place.

Anyway Rosebud fell in love with Savatage. She prefers the Zachary Stevens era to the early Power Metal of Jon Oliva. Edge Of Thorns was the first album without founding member Jon Oliva. Jon had left the band to focus on his band Doctor Butcher. Jon hand picked Zachary for his replacement. Jon also co-wrote every song on Edge Of Thorns. The music continued it's evolution to Progressive Metal. Zack's voice is deeper, more dramatic and soulful, fitting the dramatic music. So any Tribute To Rosebud's Favorite Singers needs to have Zachary Stevens represented.

Edge Of Thorns would be the final album with Chris Oliva on guitar. 2 months after this show Chris Oliva and his wife Dawn were hit head on by a drunk driver who crossed over the in their lane. Chris was killed instantly, he was 30. Dawn recovered from her injuries, but passed away in 2005. The band continued, the brother's had made a pact if one dies, the band carries on. The music changed, they still made great albums but Chris Oliva's guitar is missed. This fabulous show, though too short, is a perfect example of Savatage live. A must have!!!

When I met Rosebud the extent of her Otis Redding knowledge was he sang "Dock Of The Bay". When we started living together, I moved in my rather large music collection. I have every Otis album on vinyl & CD. Not only did I play her the "Big Hits", I played her "Deep Cuts" as well. Were talking "The Hucklebuck", "Coffee And Cigarettes", and "You Don't Miss Your Water". She was hooked. She started asking for me to make Otis Redding CDs for her car (my discs don't leave the house, ever!). So when celebrating Rosebud's Favorite Singers Otis had to be featured. This is a collection of performances from radio, television and concert soundboards. There is no real "deep cuts" but some awe inspiring performances non the same.

Curved Air is another great British Progressive Rock band. Curved Air blends Rock with Classical & Folk musics with a good helping of Fusion & Psychedelia thrown in for good measure. 2 things set Curved Air apart from the rest are violinist Darryl Way and lead vocalist Sonja Kristina. Darryl Way, like Jean-Luc Ponty & Jerry Goodman, plays an electric violin. Darryl's violins were custom made by soundman Shaun Davis' father. The sound the man gets from his violin at times sounds more like a guitar being played with an E-bow. An electronic "bow" that fits in the palm an vibrates the stings as the guitar player uses a bowing type motion. Vocalist Sonja Kristina is also a unique performer. A former croupier at the London Playboy Club she was not afraid to use her sexuality as part of the performance. Dressed in lace, feathers, beads, fur with mini skirts and small tight shirts she looked the Mod Sex Symbol part. He voice is some times quiet and reflective. Sometimes soaring and passionate. Sometimes  aggressive like a Prog-Rock Punk Princess pissed, ready to kick you in the balls. The music, the best I can describe is say members of Lindisfarne, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Focus walk into a pub, knock back a few pints and write some music.

My first experience hearing Ambrosia was when I was in Junior High School, about 13 or 14 years old. It was in my literature class and we were reading the novel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. We had read the poem The Jabberwocky and this kid named Kieth says "Ambrosia put that on their album". The teacher said to bring it in so he did the next day. The teacher played the song "Mama Fog" which is the one with the Jabberwocky section. We then discussed the presentation of the peom in the song etc. After the discussion the teacher says we can read and listen to the music.

The music of the first 2 Ambrosia records mined the same waters of Commercial Progressive Rock that Kansas did. The difference being that Ambrosia tempered their Progressive Rock leanings with the Arena Rock of say Toto while Kansas paired theirs with more of a Mainstream Hard Rock sound. Ambrosia wanted to hit the Rock Singles Radio stations. Kansas wanted the FM Album Rock audience. This show catches Ambrosia on tour to support their 3rd album Life Beyond L.A. This album marked a further watering down of their sound, to where the Prog-Rock tendencies were non-existent. The follow up One Eighty went even further down that pathway. It earned the band some chart hits however. Both "How Much I Feel" and "Biggest Part Of Me" hit #3 on The Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. The bands 5th album Road Island was a welcomed return to the Progressive Music of the 1st 2 LPs.
