I was introduced to The Dead Kennedys by my guitarist Cuzinlox. He played me In God We Trust Inc. and I was an instant fan. When people ask why Thrash Metal bands played so fast I would play that record and say exhibit A. The effect of Hardcore Punk music was huge on any Thrash/Speed Metal musician. Metallica name check The Misfits. Slayer says T.S.O.L. had a big impact on them. Overkill & Anthrax praise the complete New York City Hardcore scene for their sound. For my band Psychosis and fellow Michigan Thrashers Ruthless Horde it was The Dead Kennedys and Black Flag. Bottom line Hardcore Punk sent all of us on a crash course with a harder faster mentality in the music underground (yes!!)
Here's the obituary shared by BigO:
DH Peligro, Dead Kennedys’ longtime drummer, has died. The band confirmed the news on Instagram, writing, “Dead Kennedys’ drummer DH Peligro (Darren Henley) passed away in his Los Angeles home on October 28. Police on the scene stated that he died from trauma to the head caused by an accidental fall.” Peligro was 63 years old.
Former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra wrote: “Even behind the drum kit, he had presence. All animal instinct, he never played anything quite the same way twice. He was a born showman.” He went on to recall his first encounter with Peligro, watching his band SSI play at defunct San Francisco venue the Deaf Club. Peligro, in Biafra’s eyes, “stole the show” with his performance that night. “A free spirited African American force of nature… with this shit eating grin, a bandana on his head, and two kick drums, singing his ass off,” Biafra recalled.
Flea took to Instagram, saying “The first time I saw you play with the DK’s in ‘81 you blew my mind. The power, the soul, the recklessness.” Superchunk’s Jon Wurster posted a video of a Dead Kennedys set in San Francisco from 1984 with the words “DH Peligro has left the building. One of the absolute greats.”
Peligro made his recorded debut with Dead Kennedys on the 1981 EP In God We Trust, Inc, which famously marked the band’s first of many references railing against President Ronald Reagan. The record also includes their iconic hit “Nazi Punks Fuck Off.” Peligro’s hardcore drumming style continued in a modified form on the band’s sophomore album, 1982’s Plastic Surgery Disasters, and on through their next string of records: 1985’s Frankenchrist, 1986’s Bedtime for Democracy, and the 1987 compilation album Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death.
Following Dead Kennedys break up in December 1986, Peligro briefly joined Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988. Peligro was also responsible for introducing Kiedis and Flea to then-teenager John Frusciante, who joined as their new guitarist shortly afterward.
Peligro was an early Black icon in the punk rock scene and was frequently outspoken about his experiences with racism while touring, including being denied entry into clubs his bands were scheduled to play. “Music would take me to places I wouldn’t normally go, and it’s fine while you were onstage, but when you got off, they’d get drunk and call you all kinds of names,” he told LA Weekly.
“You go down South, you go across the Midwest, then people were thinking that it was music for white people, or I was the janitor or security or something. You got to experience the racism firsthand, because everybody wasn’t as open-minded as they were in San Francisco. It’s a bit more open and accepted today, but there’s still pockets of people who want to use punk rock to create hate music. That angers me to no end.” - pitchfork.com, nme.com.

Tom Verlaine died January 8, 2023 from prostate cancer which had metastasized, he was 73. This hits home for me twice. For one Television was one of the 1st Punk Rock bands I got into. Along with The Ramones, Television was a little easier to get into than say Black Flag or The Meatmen. I was a fan from my 1st listen to all 4 of those bands but from introducing my friends to different bands I listen to Television was a little easier. My second reason is the fact that he died from prostate cancer that had spread. He died 18 days after my operation to have my prostate removed. I have no idea if he had an aggressive form or slow moving. By the press release he was "only ill a short time"....the only cancer that kills more men than lung cancer is prostate cancer. The number one killer in men is heart disease the number two is cancer...early detection is the only way to really catch it in time...we all know where I'm going with this guys, get checked.

JustDave's Info:
The concert actually was at Palisade Gardens, San Diego, California July 20, 1985. This info and a copy of the flyer came from a Gang Green fan website https://metallipromo.com/gang.html. Original upload said it was at Roller Rink, San Diego CA 07-20-1985. If the date is correct than this is at The Palisade Gardens.
I forgot about this one. Alcohol driven Hardcore/Crossover Punk. I used to play Gang Green a lot during my time in Psychosis due to the fact I didn't want other Thrash Metal bands to influence my writing. I listened to a lot of Joe Walsh, Joe Cocker, Devo, FEAR, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Ian Gillan (solo) and Gang Green. I guess it did affect my writing since after I left they changed their name to Rusted Shut with the bass player taking over vocals and song writing. The new songs sounded like Black Sabbath with lyrics about his dog and room mate. I went on to play Death Metal for a while with Cranial Colonic (a much better name than Rusted Shut).

JustDave's Notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to raise the volume a bit and add a fade in and fade out at the beginning and end. No EQ or noise reduction used, no remastering done. The DVD had lossy audio so I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper.
I shed a tear when I heard Jeff Beck died. He passed the day of my cancer surgery. I found out when I got home from hospital. It gutted me.
The Jeff Beck Group was one of the first bands my Aunt Red introduced me too. She gave me an 8-track tape that had both Truth & Beck-Ola on it. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate those 2 albums as an 11 in how much they impacted my musical taste. Jeff Beck Group MKI, Deep Purple MKI & MKII, Black Sabbath (w/ Ozzy), & MC5 where always next to my stereo as well as The Who Live At Leeds, and Alice Cooper Killer. All the rest of my collection would be in my cabinet.
I had a friend come to visit and said something like "Wow what a nice music collection". I replied in a cocky tone "Hey thanks, I always tell people just ask for me to play something and I most likely have it." Now this was Disco Days and he says "Rod Stewart". I pulled out my copy of Truth/Beck-Ola and put it on. When it was done he said "Tape that for me". I used to tell my 1980s Metal Head friends that Rod Stewart played a big part in the development of Heavy Metal. They would laugh or yell something obscene, then of course I would play them the Truth/Beck-Ola duo and would have to tape it for them.
I included the obituary that BigO had shared. I hope you enjoy the music.
