Now for my next installment of my Salute To Progressive Rock Bands we have If. If is a British Progressive Rock/Jazz Rock band that, like Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears merged Prog-Rock, Rock, Blues and Big Jazz horns. If was though a little more Progressive Rock than the a fore mentioned bands. The first song "Your City Is Falling" is the perfect track to set the scene for the rest of the show. The song starts with its chorus that sounds like something The Mothers Of Invention would come up with around 200 Motels era. It then morphs to a smooth Jazz that soon is taken over by a Hammond organ riff like Greg Allman. Vocalist J.W. Hodkinson has a bit of a unique way of blending a tone like Pete Townshend with the power of Roger Daltry, the drama of Greg Lake's delivery, sometimes with a Jack Bruce phrasing. Guitars that can sound like Pat Metheny's clean tone to fuzzed out wah-wah that would make the most diehard of the Fillmore freak go wow man. They really are hard to explain to the uninitiated, my advice is to download this CD if you love trying different. If you are a fan of Focus, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Terry Kath era Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, throw them in a blender and your starting to understand.

Cliff Davies went on to make Ted Nugent's solo career a success. Dennis Elliot went on to play in Foreigner. Dave Greenslade would go on to work with Coloseum, Greenslade & as a solo artist. John Mealing played sessions for Mick Ronsoon, Leo Sayer, & John Entwistle ultimately joining The Strawbs. J.W. Hodkinson formed Rogue. Dick Morrissey went on to pay sessions with more names to count than we have space. Dave Quincy formed Zzebra. Dave Wintour went on to session work, including the bass on the Rocky Horror Picture Show track "Dammit Janet".

Other Notes:
Host Phil Hendrie got his start in radio at WBJW Florida in 1973. As all DJs do he moved from station to station as his career grew. He soon developed a cast of characters that he voiced. Phil Hendrie became one of the many hosts that Westwood One would use over the years. He also is a voice over actor in commercials, animated shorts and features. His credits include Futurama and King Of The Hill. He now has a podcast called Truth Is Our Bitch.

The Greg Kihn Band were on tour promoting their Kihnspiracy LP. Kihnspiracy gave The band their 1st Top 10 Hit "Jeapardy" topping the sales of their previous Hit "The Break Up Song" which hit the Top 20.

Here is something that's actually a little rare and I didn't even know it! Our good friend Draftervoi informed me that the "Pop Concerts" from Westwood One are rare. He also told me that although this concert was used in other broadcasts, this is the longest version of this Greg Kihn Band show. It's cool having friends that know stuff LOL!!! He also helped out with pictures and a couple news paper ads for the show. The Chicago 1983 Pre-FM I recently posted from my collection is also from the Westwood One Pop Concert series. I also have one from Crosby, Stills & Nash from the Pop Concert Series I will encode when I find the vinyl in all the boxes. Since the move every thing from the music room is still in boxes. It's going to take a while to get it situated...

According to the MC Introductions: Betty Davis dedicated this show to Miles Davis.

Betty Davis, the second wife of Miles Davis, never obtained the heights she should have when she was releasing records and touring the world. Like many ground breaking artists, she flew a little low on the radar for most of the music listening masses. Putting her sexuality right up front for all to see, she blazed a trail for artists like Madonna to dress and act as sensual and sexual as they wanted. Why not male artists were wearing tight pants and a lot stuffed them to look um bigger.

Let's talk about the music a bit. It was a mixture of Raw Funk and Jazz (yes please!). Betty and her backing band functioned as a real band. All the songs they wrote were written together in band Jam sessions. Improvisation was a huge part of their live performances. Betty was very influential to her husband Miles in the fact she introduced him to both Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. The influence of Bety Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone is written all over the Bitches Brew album.

The recording is a really good audience recording with very little audience noise interfering with the listening experience. There is some wind noise at times. The taper admits in his notes that he didn't have wind screens for his mcs.

Miles Davis was scheduled to play this festival but decided to take a break from music, which lasted 5 years. He personally had Betty Davis booked to replace him. There is a great documentary about Betty Davis called Betty: They Say I'm Different which you should seek out if you want to learn more about Betty. I watched it on a online streaming service called TUBI at of course https:tubi.com not sure if the documentary still available or not. It is a free service you can sign up for (they don't bomb your email either). A lot of cable providers have it for free in their app sections so check it out they have a lot of music documentaries that I had never heard of...Enjoy The Betty Davis My Friends!!
