Another chance to see Henry Rollins in my own backyard (I grew up in Detroit) that I missed. I missed seeing Black Flag in 1986 because my band Psychosis was headlining at Blondies (also in Detroit) that same night. On this night Henry Rollins was fronting his eponymously named solo band. This night my band Psychosis was headlining a show at a club called The Sleazy D in Lansing, Michigan. I think Ted Nugent was at Pine Knob and either White Zombie or Sepultura at Harpo's. A big night for live music. I remember we sold out the last of the initial pressing of our 1st album that night. Driving home that night we heard our song "Demon Lord" on the Lansing college radio station. They eventually played the whole album but received the most requests for our tune "Fluffy Bunny Boo" (don't laugh it was one of our heaviest hence the goofy name). Any way it was great to get a recording of this gig a few years later.

Everyone knows I love my Punk Rock. Black Flag, the Henry Rollins era, is one of my favorites. When Henry Rollins joined Black Flag, Greg Ginn was already taking his band into territory other than Harcore Punk. Black Flag started playing slower riffs in a sort of proto-Sludge Metal style that did influence Eyehategod, Grief, Down and other Sludgey Doomy worshipers of the riff. This unknown generation cassette sounds pretty good and comes from that time when Black Flag grew their hair and started to play slower, some in the crowd seem to give Henry a hard time about it pleasing Henry of course.

Henry Rollins is one of my favorite performers, so much passion in every movement and syllable. I never saw him with Black Flag (had my own gig when they played their last show here in Detroit so..). I've seen him a couple times with The Rollins Band and was just blown away (too bad he's now retired from music!). The man could be intimidating when seen from the front row of a club.

I downloaded this recording from a nice blog called The Luxor Dream run by a person named Titus. I do believe he made the cover art as well. Titus has been around a while and has a nice variety of recordings to share. I recommend visiting.

Our Roots Of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Series brings us to one of the reasons why Thrash Metal bands play fast. It was the Punk Rock influence. Hardcore Punk Rockers Black Flag were one of the biggest. For me it was Black Flag, Dead Kenedys and The Plasmatics. The Misfits play a hand in it as well as The Meatmen. I remember when I first heard Black Flag. I was in High School studying art prepping to become a High School Art Teacher. That didn't happen because of my music career, but that has no bearing on the story. I had a 3 hour commercial art class and our teacher signed us up for a scientific study on how music affects learning. We were allowed to listen to whatever music we brought in. The class across the hall listened to nothing but Classical Music and the control group listened to none. I have no idea of the study's results, it didn't interest me then. We did however like the teacher said bring in whatever we wanted to listen to. A friend in the class said he was going to bring in some Hardcore Punk to see if the teacher would play it. It was a Black Flag 12 inch record with like 4 songs per side. The teacher noted it didn't have a speed marked on the label. He asked my buddy what speed, and he said he wasn't sure. The teacher first played it on 33 then on 45. It was meant to be 45 but hell I thought the slower speed sounded great. When it was played at 45 I flipped out, I was a Black Flag fan for life. This recording is from the last Black Flag show, they broke up in the van afterward. This was my only chance to have seen Black Flag. I didn't make the show (didn't even know they played). My band Psychosis was headlining Blondie's that night (we sold out). Hey I still get to hear it though thanks to a lucky taper who caught lightning in a bottle.

This is a great sounding recording of one hell of a show. Henry & the band are in fine form here, the only thing wrong is the length of the set. Way too short!!! This also has one of the best live versions of "Liar" that I've heard.

Here is an offering from what has been called the first Hardcore band.  My first exposure to Black Flag was when a friend of mine who was into the punk/new wave scene brought one of Black Flag's early EPs over. It was pressed on 12" vinyl with no speed setting printed on the label (it was 45rpm). We played the sucker for 2 hours on 33 speed before we flipped it to 45. Either way blew our minds.

This is a short but nice sounding Pre-FM  recording. The interview section cracks me up when Henry is asked what do you do with a 15 year old girl who gets a Black Flag bars tattoo on her for head, his answer .. "Give here a knife some acid, point her west and say KILL !"

Somewhat legendary demo featuring the short-lived five-piece lineup of Henry Rollins, Greg Ginn, Chuck Dukowski, Dez Cadena, and Chuck Biscuits. These sessions were in 1982 although the art work says 1983.

While embroiled in a bitter lawsuit with Unicorn Records that cost a countless and overwhelming amount of hours and dollars, the label slapped an injunction against the band, preventing them from recording and releasing under the name Black Flag.

Under clear threat of law, in 1982, following the release of the landmark album Damaged, Black Flag snuck into the studio to record songs that would ultimately compose both the My War and Slip It In records. These are the only recordings the band made with possibly their strongest lineup. Also included are two songs that never made it past this demo, "What Can You Believe" & "Yes I Know".

These versions are far more vital and uncontainable than those that would ultimately end up on the official SST releases. Cadena's visceral rhythm is the perfect counterpoint to Ginn's damaging, stinging, cascading leads, while Biscuits' drumming paired with Dukowski's muscular bass is a more feral Phil Rudd-Cliff Williams combo. Though only a bootleg, this is the most visceral and brutal set of Black Flag recordings available.
