Nice FM recording from The Headless Cross Tour. Headless Cross was the second release to feature vocalist Tony Martin. Martin stepped into the breach after the departure of Ray Gillan. Ray of course had stepped in for ousted vocalist Glen Hughes. Martin's first task unenviable task was to re-record Ray Gillan's vocals for The Eternal Idol album. A very hard task as Martin confessed that some of the keys were out of his comfort range. The Headless Cross album was the first written with Martin's vocals in mind, and the first to feature Hard Rock/Heavy Metal journeyman drummer Cozy Powell. Cozy's only demand, "pick a vocalist and stay with him, Black Sabbath needs to regain it's legitimacy". Martin has sang on as many releases as Ozzy and more than Dio gaining the respect of Black Sabbath fans everywhere.

For our Salute To Progressive Rock Bands we have Emerson, Lake & Powell. Carl Palmer was busy so not wanting to sit aside Keith Emerson & Greg Lake found another P for ELP in Cozy Powell. It was even a C.P. as well (Carl, Cozy ok I laughed). Only recording one album and undertaking only one tour, this line up is a bookmark like Ian Gillan with Black Sabbath or Buggles with Yes (for me Emerson, Lake & Powell and Sabbath Ian Gillan were to better effect than Buggles and Yes Imho).

Another show from Whitesnake for Rosebud's Tribute To Her Favorite Singers. This one is from the 1980's Hair Metal era that most of their America fans know of. I like this era of the band but for me I like it more when David Coverdale sings in his proper range (He forced his voice to hit notes it shouldn't be reaching for. He ended up paying for that later as his voice started to give out on tours). Rosebud & I have caught only one Whitesnake show together and this was late in the 1990's and Dave's voice sounded real good. He didn't hit the real high notes on some songs but sounded real good on all the material. This boot is a great addition to your Whitesnake collction

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to edit track marks, and add some EQ. I tried to bring out the missing high end of these recordings, they were pretty heavy on the bass to start with. I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps because the DVD had lossy audio.

The DVD is allegedly from  the private tapes of Cozy Powell. The date is what seems to be the most commonly used for these recordings, Black Sabbath played a run of shows from November 19th - November 28th which is how the DVD cover art is dated. I used the 19th for our dating purposes because it's the most commonly used around Black Sabbath forums.

Nice sounding recording from Black Sabbath's tour to promote the Headless Cross album. The first of which to feature the powerhouse talents of drummer Cozy Powell. Cozy would play on 3 Black Sabbath studio albums, Headless Cross, Tyr and Forbidden. Cozy was quite the Rock & Roll journeyman playing on over 60 albums in his life time. Stints with Rainbow, The Jeff Beck Group, The Brian May Band, and E.L.P to name just a few had made the man quite famous. Cozy Powell died at the age of 50 in a car crash. It's estimated that he was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour, while talking on a cell phone in bad weather. All these factors contributed to his accident.

Continuing with our solute to Ronnie James Dio we have a fantastic show from the Rainbow Rising line-up of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. This tape is supposed to come from the personal archives of Cozy Powell. Cozy made soundboard and stage recordings of his many bands which have surfaced as bootlegs over the years since his death. This boot has two separate mixes of the same show the version on CD 1 being the most complete. Ronnie's vocals are amazing on this one. Personally I can never have enough live versions of Ronnie singing "Catch The Rainbow".

With the anniversary of Ronnie James Dio's passing comes closer Rosebud and I have decided to pay tribute the man with bootlegs from his various bands. Up first is an offering from his days in Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. More specifically the Rainbow Rising line-up. Considered by many to be the definitive version of the band, which would only last to the recording sessions for the follow up album started. This 2 CD bootleg is comprised of tracks from 3 Japan shows. The concerts in Germany and Japan during the Rising Tour were recorded to make the On Stage live album. With a heavy metal sound and the improvisational skills of MK2 era Deep Purple, it's no small wonder this line-up is loved by so many.

For many, Rosebud & Myself included, the Ronnie James Dio era of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, is considered the best. With a trio of studio LP's and one double live LP Dio & Blackmore drew the blueprint for the Power Metal genre. Sword & Sorcery, Maidens, Knights, Kings & Queens became the subject matter for many imitators.

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was opening for REO Speedwagon when The BBC taped this show. On the road to promote the Long Live Rock & Roll release, this would be Ronnie James Dio's last tour with Rainbow. Ritchie decided to pursue a more commercial direction for the band, leaving the sword and sorcery themes behind. Dio didn't agree with that decision and decided to leave the band. David Stone and Bob Daisley were fired and replaced with Dony Airey and Roger Glover respectively. To replace the departed Dio, Blackmore first attempted to convince Ian Gillan to join him. Gillan refused and Blackmore hired Graham Bonnett. In 1997 Cozy Powell convinced Blackmore and Dio to reform the Rainbow Rising line-up. It was to be a one tour reunion, alas Cozy Powell's death in 1998 kept this reunion from happening.

I'm not sure if Alex Ligertwood actually sings on any of these recordings. He was the original vocalist for the revamped Jeff Beck Group, and helped write the album.

Nice sounding set of outtakes from the first album by this line-up of the Jeff Beck Group. This line-up would last only 2 years and two albums. The band announced their break-up shortly after completing their second album stating "The fusion of the musical styles of the various members has been successful within the terms of individual musicians, but they didn't feel it had led to the creation of a new musical style with the strength they had originally sought." IMHO they put out 2 great LP's that are still in heavy rotation on my stereo.

In early April and still signed to RAK, Jeff Beck reformed The Jeff Beck Group group with keyboardist Max Middleton, drummer Cozy Powell and bassist Clive Chaman and vocalist Alex Ligertwood. Later in April that year the new band began recording sessions at Island Studios, London. They worked on songs by Beck and focused on Situation, which had lyrics by Ligertwood. Other songs such as Morning Dew were given attention, with the help of producer Jimmy Miller, who had worked with Traffic and with The Rolling Stones. During May 1971, after a week of recording sessions, Beck left RAK and signed a new record deal with CBS. Epic, a subsidiary of CBS, was assigned to release Beck's work, and having heard the Island studio tapes were not happy with the vocals. During May, Beck started looking for a new vocalist. In late May, after hearing Bobby Tench perform with his band Gass, he employed him as vocalist for the band. Tench was given only a few weeks to write new lyrics and add his vocals to the album, before mixing resumed on tracks previously recorded by Beck and the other band members. During early July 1971 the band returned to Island Studios to finish the album and Beck took over as producer. Rough and Ready was released in UK on 25 October 1971 with the US release following during February 1972, a sixteen day promotional tour in USA followed and the album eventually reached #46 in the album charts.

On November 25, 1971 Stephen Davis wrote in Rolling Stone magazine; "A surprisingly, fine piece of work from a man who wasn't really expected to come back. Beck is back, and in pretty good shape too." Rough and Ready album review. On 25 November 1971 Roy Carr from The New Musical Express wrote, "The album falls into that trap whereby the performance far exceeds the material. Beck hasn't lost any of his fire as he rips off solo after solo with flashy confidence"

About the single "Got the feeling", Derek Johnson wrote in the New Musical Express; "An excellent disc combining a strong commercial element with an altogether more progressive approach"

Notes:
- These recordings are taken from the private collection of Cozy Powell.

- This is the complete and ultimate set of Dehumanizer demos, featuring many different versions of songs that appeared on the Dehumanizer album and songs that didn't make the cut.

- The first two tracks of CD 2 are actually from The Geezer Butler Band in the mid '80s featuring Carl Sentence on vocals. They feature early versions of "Master of Insanity" and "Computer God", although "Computer God" doesn't sound anything like what ended up on the Dehumanizer album "Master of Insanity" is very, very similar.

- CD 2 also features "Letters From Earth" with different lyrics and two songs that didn't make the album, "Bad Blood" and "The Next Time".

- CD 3 features a version of "Computer God" that is lyrically nothing like the one on the album but musically the same, also a few instrumental rehearsals of the track, as well as a short conversation between Ronnie and Cozy.

- The only reason Cozy wasn't on the final cut of the album was because soon after these demos he broke his pelvis in a horse riding accident and was unable to play for a short time. Dio wanted to bring Simon Write in (from Dio's last album 'Lock up the Wolves') but Iommi and Butler decided he sounded to AC/DCish and brought back Vinny Appice.
