- "Roundabout" is missing from this version of the show but is on the DVD-A version of the Discrete 4-Channel Quad Reels.
- Due to the equipment of the era there is an audible hum from thhe amplifiers on stage.

Recording Notes:
- The encore, "Roundabout", is missing from this version of the show, however we do get three songs from Gryphon's Boston Garden set.
- "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)" is also missing from this version of the show as in all versions but the audience recording and a matrix of Wolfgang's streaming version of Yes' set.
- The recording of "Roundabout" on the circulating versions may be from the Wolfgang's Vault streaming version as well.

Editing Notes:
- Ripped the CD-rs with Exact Audio Copy to wave 16bit/44,1khz.
- Used Goldwave to edit some track marks and seperate the Bill Minkin voiceover tracks from the music tracks.
- Used Trader's Little Helper to encode the wave files to flac level 8 and align any sector boundary errors.

Other Notes:
- Recording Date, Broadcast Date and Show Number Info From http://www.eclipse67.com/kbi.htm a great fan generated database on King Biscuit Flower Hower, BBC Presents and British Biscuit broadcasts.
- The only recordings of this Yes line-up are the studio album Relayer and any live concert recordings from 1974-1976.
- The Relayer album was written and recorded by Anderson, Howe, Squire & White before Patrick Moraz joined the band. Moraz had to write his keyboard parts around the already recorded guitar and bass tracks. Usually a band writes with the keyboards in mind but without doing that and having Moraz write and record his parts afterward resulted in a very dense sounding record. Also Steve Howe was using a newly adopted, very agressive guitar style for this album which influenced Squire and White to play more agressively too. This resulted in a very heavy album as well as the dense sound.
- A personal note, this is my favorite album from Yes to this day due to this dense and heavy sound quality.
- Gryphon was on their first tour in the United States. They toured 1974-1975 as the opening act for the Yes Relayer tour.
- Gryphon replaced bass player Philip Nestor with Malcolm Bennett in 1975 while still touring The United States with Yes.
- The studio version of Gryphon's second song "Midnight Mushrumps" is 19 minutes, the band just peforms the last 7 minutes of the track at this show.
- The studio version of the Gryphon song "Checkmate" is 10 minutes in length but Gryphon only performs a 4 minute version.
- The Gryphon set in Pre-FM has not surfaced in Trading Circles until now. The only recording to surface is a streaming version on Wolfgang's Vault. The Collective of Live Music is proud to finally liberate this "lost recording"!!

I have DVD-As of some King Biscuit Flower Hour Discrete Quadraphonic Reels that I downloaded from The Trader's Den. I have encoded this one in Quadraphonic and Stereo Formats. Foobar2000 and VLC Media Player can play Quadraphonic files, Foobar2000 may need an additional plug in for Quad (I can't remember).

This version of the show has the encore "Roundabout" but is still missing "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)". There is an audience and Wolfgang's Vault audio stream matrix in trade circles that has "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)" but as of yet I do not have that version.

I separated the Quad flac into 2 downloads due to size each part opens independently. I did this because MEGA can sometimes stall on large files.

Some people might see this as a bit of a cheat because Bruford to some is Progessive Rock and to others Jazz-Fusion. I see them as a mix of Jazz and Progressive Rock which is a fusion of elements...Any way this is part of my Sunday Morning Jazz entertainment.

The recording starts a little rough due to the keyboards being so over powering but the soundman gets it under control quick the rest is a nice listening experience. That due to the remastering and speed correction done by Goody who is known for tinkering with shows and making them sound a lot better, this one is no exception.

One of my favorite concert memories was going to the Yes Union show at The Palace Of Auburn Hills. There was 9 of us that went in one van to make transportation easier. We all had scattered seats having bought them late. Only 2 of us sat together, Me and my great friend Gypsy Dan. The Gypsy and I have known each other a long time, bonding on our mutual love of all things Rock n Roll and marijuana!! We worked together in a production company called Red Eye Rock Productions that ran a weekly Red Eye Rock Fest in a big field in Northern Auburn Hills. He was also my weed man for decades...We sat together and were about 5 rows back from the rotating stage. Dan bought a program which I used to roll some really big joints. We lit one up just as a girl in front of us lit a cigarette. That's when we noticed an usher was only 2 rows behind us. The usher waled forward and told the girl to put her cigarette out. Dan and I kept smoking, she didn't say anything. We lit up another around the 3rd song and this girl in front of us lit another cigarette. The usher leaned over my shoulder while I had the program open in my lap with weed on it, tapped the girl and said "Next time I see you you will have to go stand in the back" then walked away. This girl then turned around and said to Dan and I "What the hell?" Dan and I just lit another doobie and offered her a hit. We never got bothered.....

Now this transfer of Tapehead2's Analog Master via the Krw_co crew just popped up at the Trader's Den about a week ago. It's a raw transfer that has it's faults which I have noted the worst of. Now it also has it's advantages too. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this recording over and over since I downloaded it. So much so that my son Spider asked me to retire it for a while. I was being a little annoying, stopping and starting so I could catalog some blemish in the recording. Don't let the list of faults keep you from downloading most do not affect any music. It really is a nice listen! I'm sure someone will remaster this sooner or later, it's a great start, a little EQ and manual noise removal and this could be polished into a gem.

This WMMS Broadcast Master recording is not really rare either but it is the lesser posted of the 1978 tour. I really love this show because it was a simulcast so it's warts and all. It's also a complete concert, some FM broadcasts are edited prerecorded affairs. The best performances picked and bad ones left out all that crap. As for the performance, these guys don't sound like a band that will be going it's separate ways after the tour.

Known Faults: Dropouts in "Roundabout" and "Ritual" (mostly restored)

To most Yes fans looking back at Tales From Topographic Oceans, the biggest disappointment wasn't the album, tour or Rick Wakeman's departure after the tour. It's that no soundboard or broadcast recordings exist from the tour. There are however 73 different bootleg releases of the tour. All audience recordings of differing quality from unlistenable to this great Mike Millard audience recording. In my humble opinion if you want one good recording from this tour this is the one to have. The sound is really good, Mike the Mic had a great position and with The JEMS Team's great work with the transfer you have an awesome listening experience!

Phil Spalding died February 5, 2023, he was 65.

With Yes, Asia and solo albums you would think that Steve Howe had enough to keep him busy in the 1980s. Turns out he didn't, neither did Steve Hackett after leaving Genesis for a solo career. So what do you do, get a drummer, bassist and singer you already have 2 fantastic guitarists. I remember listening to an interview with the 2 Steves when they said they wanted to find a singer that could give the band an American sound. To do that they hire the British former lead vocalist of Bronz (the guy could hit some freakishly high notes in his day!). I guess they meant American sounding in the Styx, Journey kinda vibe. They tapped Marillion's former drummer Jonathan Mover and bassist Phil Spalding who's Prog-Rock cred was from playing with Mike Oldfield. Of course Steve Howe missed his Asia & Yes mates so Geoff Downes was brought in to produce. I bought the album after hearing "When the Heart Rules the Mind" and I love it, still play it am listening to it right now as I type this. The group failed to make a follow up album and the members went back to their other jobs.

The show is great performance wise but the tape suffers from his, radio background noise and simple age. Now that said do not be afraid to check this show out, it's still very listenable and enjoyable!!

This tour is before the 1st LP was released. The band was actually called The Bill Bruford Quartet at the time. The name change to Bill Bruford's Earthworks was after the completion of the 1986 Japan Tour.

While listening to this great sounding recording I couldn't help notice some of the keyboard (or maybe electronic drum pad) sounds are used on some Yes songs as well. If you have never heard Bill Bruford's Earthworks before this is the perfect recording to begin with. If you're a fan of Earthworks this will become your new favorite recording if you don't already have it.

This time Rosebud picked our post for the Salute To Progressive Rock Bands Series. This is what she had to say about it....

Dave took me to my first Yes show about 2 years after we met. It was a show that focused more on the Radio hits I knew like "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", "Long Distance Runaround" etc. Unfortunately for some reason the sound was off in the theater balcony. You could barely hear and people kept shushing each other. The Next time we saw them was at Pine Knob Amphitheater which is a larger venue. We had like 8th row seats (Dave pulled some strings to get). They opened with a song I never heard before. When they announced the next song Dave said  something like "....Yes! Tales" lit a joint and passed it to me. Then said "You're most likely to hear the more Proggy side tonight". He was right they were awesome, I recognized "Roundabout" that was it LOL! On this recording there's a little hum sometimes from amplifiers but the band plays so well and it's not real noticeable when they play.

Alan Gowen passed away in 1981 from leukemia, he was 47.

For this weeks installment of our Tribute To Progressive Rock Bands we have a nice one from the British Prog-Band National Health. This was still pretty early in the bands career having formed in 1975. This incarnation of the band never released a studio album. The self titled first album was released in 1978. By then Bill Bruford had left National Health and formed Bruford. His replacement was Pip Pyle formerly of Gong. Bass player Mont Campbell left before the first album as well. He was replaced by Neil Murray who later went on to Rainbow and Black Sabbath. National Health actually worked with members of Henry Cow for their second album (awh man to have some soundboard quality recordings of Henry Cow).

The music is mostly instrumental, vocalist Amanda Parsons really sings mostly octave vocalizations when she does sing. Download this show for a glimpse at a quick passing ship in the prolific career of Bill Bruford

I recorded the early show via my discreet soundboard patch (cables plugged in and “hanging out” under the seat directly in front of the board). I had no plans to stay for the late show, but then my friend the soundman told me that Bill Bruford was looking to borrow a DAT to record the late show.

I was then introduced to Bill, and he told me the story: they had rented a mobile recording truck to record the tour, but they got stuck in bad weather in Rochester. Bill loved the sound of the venue from the early show and wanted to chronicle the late show in some (inexpensive) way. We struck a deal whereby I would “go home to get my DAT” (I of course did not tell him that I had it with me or that I recorded the early show) to record the late show and, in exchange, I could run a cassette version for myself (he offered to send me a cassette copy of the DAT, but I suspected that would never actually happen, so I told him I’d bring a cassette deck as well).

So I did in fact go home, picked up my trusted Sony TCD-5M, dropped off the early show master DAT tape, and went back to the venue. I then proceeded to do as arranged: I recorded both to DAT (for Bill) and cassette (for me). I’ve made hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of board masters, but I can’t recall another time of a British Prog Musician actually allowing someone to patch in.

Pretty cool...Bill actually allowed this recording to be made by a fan and now we have it for our collection.

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I used Goldwave to fix some volume issues. No EQ or noise reduction was used. I encoded the waveswith Traders Little Helper to MP3 320kbps because the DVD had lossy audio.

Nice sound, a great set, and a fabulous performance. One of the best keyboard players in Progressive Rock performs some selections from his solo career, a classic Yes track "Starship Trooper" and a cover of The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby". Simply a must have!

In Detroit this special Quadraphonic Mix would have been broadcast on WWWW-FM 106.7. The FM signal at W4 was Quadraphonic since 1969 (I have the King Quad Poster which had King Kong on it). W4 is kind of notorious for a scene in the Howard Stern movie Private Parts. In the movie Howard Stern is working at a Rock station in Detroit when the format is suddenly changed to Country Music from Progressive Rock. Howard tried to fit in with the new format but actually did quit on air stating "..This is Hop A Long Howie saying I quit...". The station was known for championing local music and had a weekly feature The W4 Home Grown Show. This show broke such Detroit bands as Toby Redd, The Romantics, The Look, Rhythm Corps, & The Rockets. If you had a professionally recorded demo it was kind of easy to get it played on W4.

The suggested track separation for CD-R's would be between "To Be Over" and "The Gates Of Delirium"

The 32 bit file set is 1.72 Gig so I divided the files into 4 parts all 4 are needed to unzip. The 32 bit is all set for making an Audio DVD. Use the 16 bit for CD-R's.

When I got this some tracks had bad edits so I decoded the files and retracked them. I did not EQ or alter the sound in any way. The original uploader did not indicate which show number this was or provide any cue sheet or label scans.

My first time seeing Yes live was on the Union Tour, at The Palace of Auburn Hills. They played in the round there so all the seats were actually pretty good. I feel pretty lucky to have actually seen this particular line-up of  Yes. Here we have a great performance from the line-up and in Pre-FM quality, too.

6 Degrees Of Led Zeppelin Post # 19

After the break up of Led Zeppelin and Yes, members of both bands joined forces to attempt forming a new band called XYZ, the name stood for Ex Yes & Zeppelin. The band was to have Chris Squire on bass, Alan White on drums both of Yes. Jimmy Page on guitar, Robert Plant on vocals, both from Led Zeppelin, and Greenslade keyboardist Dave Lawson. Robert Plant wasn't emotionally redy to play music without John Bonham so he decided not to participate. The band, without Jimmy Page morphed into the 90125 Yes line-up.
