Everyone who follows the blog knows I love Jazz bands playing songs from non-Jazz songwriters. Jazz Guitarist Bill Frisell has worked with his present quartet for long enough that they didn't figure out the arraignments to the songs before entering the studio. As Bill Frisell said in an interview they "..just went for it." The album they were recording was All We Are Saying ... A Tribute To The Music Of John Lennon. The songs, though arraigned for a Jazz Quartet, are not unrecognizable. The band let the melodies of the original songs guide the arrangement. I think lovers of John Lennon solo and Beatles material will love this show, so download it, it's not a Jazzy Freak out. Jazz lovers that doesn't mean this is Muzak. It's Bill Frisell, enough said......

I don't know why I haven't shared this show yet. It's a killer show from Sir Paul, with a nice selection of songs. I was at my friend Gypsy Dan's house where a Knebworth Party was going on. There was quite a few of us gathered there to listen to the broadcast. We yelled, screamed & applauded just like we were at the show. There was brats, steaks & burgers on the grill, 2 kegs in the bath tub, and a case of red wine in the kitchen. It however was B.Y.O.B. bring your own bag! No problem there since everyone there smoked. Gypsy Dan had parties like that all the time. He lived out in the country so we didn't bother anyone. We actually started having concerts on his property every Friday & Saturday. Always three local bands, 5 dollars US, 4 dollars US for women, 8 dollars US if you were under drinking age. I was in charge of booking bands. If I couldn't find a total of three acts for a night I would have my band play. I wouldn't get payed but the rest of the band would. See I already collected a salary, it was that well organized, and Dan was not going to pay me twice.

As most of you know, I love Jazz Musicians playing Rock band's songs. This concert is a Tribute To The Song Writing Of The Beatles. It's a unique sound with piano, vibes, and trombone playing "Come Together", but rather enjoyable. This has become my new favorite tribute concert recording (they change with my whims of course). I recommend this one, no really I do.

A nice recording from The Beatles before Beatlemania would take over the USA. In a few months the band would make their Ed Sullivan debut and The States would never be the same. Soon long hair and Beatle Boots would be the fashion. The world of Pop Music wouldn't be the same either. Before The Beatles bands were backing groups to singers, such as Buddy Holly and The Crickets, but The Beatles were a group, every one was considered a star in the band and no one was expendable. When it was suggested to the band to dump Stuart Sutcliffe the only replay was He's a Beatle. John Lennon was taken from us by a crazed fan who's name I haven't said since it happened. On December 8, 1980 John Lennon was returning home from a recording session when a cowardly gunman shot him 4 times in the back, he was pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital. He was only 40 years old. In 1997 George Harrison was diagnosed with throat cancer, which they thought had been successfully treated. George's cancer nightmares were only beginning. In May 2001 George had to have a cancerous growth removed from his lung. He then underwent treatment for a brain tumor in June of 2001. In November of 2001 it was determined that Georges lung cancer had spread to his brain. George Harrison died November 29, 2001, he was 58.
