Part 1 of our spotlight on guitarist Nels Cline and our 3rd Sunday Morning Jazz offering comes from Nels joining forces with the Legendary Medeski, Martin, & Wood. This hour long improvisational performance is great headphone music. Fans of Medeski, Martin & Wood will note that this incarnation has more of a Post-Rock feel to the music than their normal Jazz/Funk vibe. Wilco fans may want to check this show out to see what Nels Cline does on his nights off.

John Medeski - piano, keys, Hammond B3 organ
Billy Martin - drums, percussion
Chris Wood - acoustic bass, electric bass

It's a pretty active Sunday Morning here with Spider up to go see his Mother's Family (Rosebud is his Stepmom) for their Christmas Party. Our ferrets woke Rosebud and I early by clanging their food bowls. So the music of Medeski, Martin & Wood is kind of the perfect soundtrack for the morning. This is a great sounding jam session so enjoy my friends!

Oh yeah almost forgot this is a flac upgrade to an earlier post.

JustDave's Notes:
I downloaded this kick ass DVD from a Russian torrent tracker. I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit some of the track marks, I also raised the volume by doubling it twice. No EQ or Noise Reduction was used and no remixing or remastering was done. I did remove the broadcast programs intro and outro music. The DVD itself was two parts, each part having five tracks. I cross faded the two parts together for a smoother transition. The DVD itself had lossy audio so the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper aligning all sector boundaries.

These four men to me are some of the most talented musicians in Jazz today. I have never heard a bad performance when just one of them was involved. When the four get together you have one of the best damn Jazz Improv bands today. I have a lot of music on the blog from Medeski, Martin, & Wood and John Scofield so check the links to the right.

Set Two - 12:55pm:

02 571 (Will Bernard)
03 The Heart Of Soul
04 Adele (Kirk Joseph]

07 Wiggly's Way (Medeski Martin & Wood Cover)

John Medeski's Mad Skillet:

So Many people enjoyed the last Mad Skillet post I figured, one more time. This one was recorded a couple years earlier than the last but is just as bad ass! To tell the truth I had a hard time deciding which show I was going to post first. I only have the 2 so I flipped a coin. The winner was every one because you get both anyway, so enjoy my friends.

Take The Mad Professor of Keyboards John Medeski. Add 2 members of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Sousaphonist Kirk Joseph & Drummer Terence Higgins. Then add Guitarist Will Bernard, who's played with quite a few artists such as Peter Apfelbaum's Hieroglyphics Ensemble, Tom Waitts, Don Cherry, and Stanton Moore to name a few. With a line up like that you can't lose. Through in some cover songs by Cannonball Adderley, Jelly Roll Morton, & Sun Ra. Have them write a few of their own and then you have A Hell Of A Great Night Of Awe Inspiring Music. Thankfully this great sounding matrix recording gives us a chance of hearing it for ourselves. Thanks go out to K.C. Cadwallader for the great recording, Funk It for the awesome mix and Shackaholic for the photos. This was shared on bt.etree.org where a ton of share friendly bands allow their music posted.

Two of my favorites in Jazz, Medeski, Martin & Wood and Guitar Legend John Scofield join forces to kick some Jazz ass! Each time the trio of Medeski Martin & Wood add the additional element of another instrumentalist it changes the music. With the addition of a guitarist such as John Scofield or Nels Cline the music is such that each could be a different band. Each player is allowed to add the own signature on the music. There is never a shortage of people who want to jam with all 4 of the musicians on this recording so ego must not be a factor, with the music being the magic. For some of that magic check out this great show for yourself.

I think I downloaded this from Jazz Boot Experiment but I'm not sure. Jazz Boot Experiment is another great site for live unreleased Jazz shows from various artists. They are usually posted in MP3 320kbps and have a front cover for making a CD. This is another site that I recommend all my fellow Jazz fans visit.

This is a wonderful tribute to Jazz Great Tony Williams (R.I.P.).

This Sunday Morning Jazz offering comes from the kings of improvisation, Medeski, Martin & Wood. At this show the band is joined by Jazz guitarist Nels Cline. Nels Cline leads the Free Form Jazz Group The Nels Cline Singers (no one in the band sings). Nels has recorded with a host of Jazz musicians and has also worked with Wilco, Lydia Lunch, fIREHOSE, Mike Watt's The Crew Of The Flying Saucer, and The Blue Man Group. This is an hour of improvisational jamming at it's best. Next week we will feature a show from the Nels Cline Singers (I am listening to it as I write this and it is excellent. This show is highly recommended to Jazz fans as well  as fans of Jam Bands.

Our next Sunday Morning Jazz offering is also the first posting on this blog from Medeski, Martin, & Wood. If you never heard Medeski, Martin & Wood or if you a Rocker who has been on the fence about trying some of our Jazz offerings think on the lines of Focus but with more of a Jazz feel than the Classical feel that most Focus tracks have. The band is very improvisational live and add a little Funk into the mix as well.
