I love Gil Scott-Heron's music. Great Funk/Jazz/Soul music with such world conscious lyrics. No innuendo hear Gill really wants you to hear and understand his message. The great thing is like Maven Gaye's politically and socially conscious What's Going On" You can really enjoy the music for the music as well. Since the dawn of the evolution of mankind music has been the way to bare your inner soul. To To celebrate your successes, to raise your spirits in times of strife, to morn your losses. Music is the only thing in life known to stimulate and activate the entire brain. Music is scientifically proven to help you learn because of that very unique active brain state (I invite you all to check of the book "This Is Your Brain On Music by Daniel J. Levitin) So the politically charged music of Wood Guthrie (This Land Is Your Land is a very political statement), Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Jefferson Airplane, Gil Scott-Heron, N.W.A., Public Enemy, Rage Against The Machine etc was/is very effective in spreading the political and socially messages of their times.

Nice sounding recording from Gil Scott-Heron and the Midnight Band at the legendary Bottom Line Club in New York City. After a long spoken intro Gil opens the show with the poem "New Deal". After the poem The Midnight Band comes on stage, and the music portion of the show begins with the drum heavy "Gumbai". Gil is in fine form as he and the band give a fantastic performance to a very lucky intimate audience.

I first became aware of Gil Scot-Heron in 1977 when my Aunt played Me the song "We Almost Lost Detroit" I was 12. Having grown up seeing the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station every time I went to visit my cousins who lived on Lake Erie. She told Me the about the partial meltdown of the Fermi 1 tower. It had happened when I was only 1 year old so I didn't really know about it. I took the record to school with me the next day and my teacher played it for the class. They listened in silence until it was over then stated asking the teacher questions about the incident. The teacher was very informed about the subject, and helped us to understand.

Since that day I've been a fan of Gil's music. His lyrics have always been thought provoking, causing me to seek out knowledge of the subjects he wrote about. This performance is fabulous and the recording is top notch. The first 3 songs are performed by Gil with just his keyboard, the band joins him on stage for "B Movie". Gil passed away on May 27, 2011, he had been HIV positive for some time although a cause of death was not reported. Gil's music is hard to find on CD as most of his releases have been discontinued by his former labels.
