Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone for DJs to set levels and balance before broadcasting the program at the beginning of Side A. It has not been encoded.
- There are 2 locked groove show promo beds at the end of Side B. One with a voiceover by Bill Minkin, one without. They have been encoded and moved to the end of the program.
Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.
Other Notes:
- According to the website https://www.onamrecords.com The Tubes played the Palladium 2 nights in 1981, both the 4th and 5th. I found a ticket stub for sale on Ebay for the 4th. The date August 4, 1981 is given to all bootlegs from this concert. Knowing King Biscuit it is probably a composite of both. When recording a live album you try to have the band play more than one night at a venue, record both nights and pick the best performances from each show to make the best sounding record. So the Biscuit may have took advantage of the Palladium 2 night stand.
- Drummer Prairie Prince was an original member of the band Journey. He joined in 1973 but left the band in 1974 to return to The Tubes. Frank Zappa drummer Aynsley Dunbar was chosen to replace him.
- An early champion of The Tubes was Cher who introduced another early champion, Gene Simmons, to them while they were dating. Simmons loved the show but said they shouldn't record.
- Cher had The Tubes on one of her television specials. It was a skit with an Angel played by Dolly Parton and The Devil played by The Tubes battled for Cher's musical soul. Each one played some of their songs trying to pull Cher to their side. The Tubes performed a medley of "Mondo Bondage" and "Smoke" dressed in bondage gear. This introduced me to The Tubes and I have been hooked since.
- Vince Welnick was a founding member of The Tubes. During the 1980s Vince joined Todd Rundgren's touring band. When Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland died in 1990 Welnick became a member of The Grateful Dead. When Gerry Garcia died Vince Welnick joined Bob Weir's band Ratdog. During this time Welnick began experiencing deep depression. While on tour with Ratdog Welnick attempted suicide due to depression over Gerry Garcia's death and Welnick's own battle with lung cancer. After beating the cancer and getting treatment for depression Welnick once again started battling severe depression. This time over not being asked to join the remaining Grateful Dead members in The Other Ones. On June 2, 2006 Vince Welnick commit suicide, he was 55.
- Rick Anderson died at the age of 75 December 16, 2022
