JustDave's Notes:
- Thank you Sam Elliot's Mustache for generously sending in his King Biscuit vinyls for encoding.
- Than you Draftervoi, Sam Elliot's Mustache and Matt of The Collective Of Live Music for help and inspiration.
Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone for DJs to set levels and balance before broadcasting the program at the beginning of Side A. It has not been encoded.
- There are 2 locked groove show promo beds at the end of Side B. One with a voiceover by Bill Minkin, one without. They have been encoded and moved to the end of the program.
Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.
Other Notes:
- According to the website https://www.onamrecords.com The Tubes played the Palladium 2 nights in 1981, both the 4th and 5th. I found a ticket stub for sale on Ebay for the 4th. The date August 4, 1981 is given to all bootlegs from this concert. Knowing King Biscuit it is probably a composite of both. When recording a live album you try to have the band play more than one night at a venue, record both nights and pick the best performances from each show to make the best sounding record. So the Biscuit may have took advantage of the Palladium 2 night stand.
- Drummer Prairie Prince was an original member of the band Journey. He joined in 1973 but left the band in 1974 to return to The Tubes. Frank Zappa drummer Aynsley Dunbar was chosen to replace him.
- An early champion of The Tubes was Cher who introduced another early champion, Gene Simmons, to them while they were dating. Simmons loved the show but said they shouldn't record.
- Cher had The Tubes on one of her television specials. It was a skit with an Angel played by Dolly Parton and The Devil played by The Tubes battled for Cher's musical soul. Each one played some of their songs trying to pull Cher to their side. The Tubes performed a medley of "Mondo Bondage" and "Smoke" dressed in bondage gear. This introduced me to The Tubes and I have been hooked since.
- Vince Welnick was a founding member of The Tubes. During the 1980s Vince joined Todd Rundgren's touring band. When Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland died in 1990 Welnick became a member of The Grateful Dead. When Gerry Garcia died Vince Welnick joined Bob Weir's band Ratdog. During this time Welnick began experiencing deep depression. While on tour with Ratdog Welnick attempted suicide due to depression over Gerry Garcia's death and Welnick's own battle with lung cancer. After beating the cancer and getting treatment for depression Welnick once again started battling severe depression. This time over not being asked to join the remaining Grateful Dead members in The Other Ones. On June 2, 2006 Vince Welnick commit suicide, he was 55.
- Rick Anderson died at the age of 75 December 16, 2022

Thank you so much Dave, I absolutely love the Tubes! I've unfortunately only seen them a few times, but they always bring a great show. One time here in Vegas they came out and said hi and signed autographs (before they started charging for that). The CBP album was great, but also the beginning of the end for them; being popular/successful can reck the band. But you gotta eat...
ReplyDeleteYou know that kind of personal attention to fans is all but gone now. Bands just don't do stuff like that anymore. I remember going to Harpo's in Detroit to see the band Prong on their Cleansing tour when they had the hit "Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck". As you entered the theater through the metal detectors there was the 3 guys from Prong waiting there shaking everybody's hand and saying stuff like "Hey we're Prong thanks for coming out tonight". When leader Tommy Victor shook my hand and said "You're the reason we are here" I felt it. Prong is still a band that earns my money after seeing fan appreciation like that. I actually used to walk into the audience from stage and refund some ones ticket money and give them a free cassette.

Thank you very much for this KBFH show ! I wonder why Gene Simmons told them this, how wrong he was !
ReplyDeleteReggie
The reason Simmons said The Tubes should never record is that their music up until Completion Backwards Principle was written specifically for the stage show not as stand alone songs. Simmons was aware that the stage show would not translate well to albums without the visual elements. Which is true and is what kept them a cult act until Completion Backwards Principle gave them an actual hit with "Talk To You Later". Gene Simmons sees through the lenses of whether an album will sell and have hits, not if it will become a cult classic. Simmons was right in a way since the Tubes didn't sell well until they started writing "songs" to be hit singles. For some Tubes fans chart success was the beginning of the end.

Thank you! Love this band!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome ex_mixer! One of the greatest live acts of all time in my humble opinion. You always got your ticket price worth. Miss those shows.

I see. Thank you for your answer, JD. What he said makes sense.
ReplyDeleteReg
You're welcome Reg. I'm glad you're enjoying the show. Hope to talk to you again.

excellent dave, that was my very first tubes show and sold me on the band fom there out, buying up their back catalogie and seeing them many more times.
ReplyDeletethe CBP tour was the best of them though, with fee entering the stage in a space suit, prarie prince's slidong and rotating drum riser and the classic band stil intact (spooner and bill cotton especialy missed therafter)

I'm glad I could help in you re-living those memories. One of the best things about collecting bootlegs!
