Another post for our Origins Of Hard  Rock/Heavy Metal series.

This is a huge collection of session outtakes from The Immortal Elmore James. Elmore James was known as The King Of Slide Guitar and was actually inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992 for his influence on Rock And Roll.

The Blues was a huge influence on the early Heavy Blues/Hard Rock acts such as The Yardbirds, The Jeff Beck Group, Free and Foghat. The Blues was also a big influence on the development of Heavy Metal. Black Sabbath's 1st album marries Blue and Jazz then breaks it down to the riff. Judas Priest started out as a Heavy Blues band. When K.K. Downing auditioned for the original line-up of Priest, he was passed over because he was too Heavy Metal. Blues can still be heard in Judas Priest's music, just not as blatant as Sabbath. Vanilla Fudge played it the same way, taking songs down to the riff then delivering them with all the emotional power of the Blues. Van Halen might have covered "Dancing In The Streets" but Vanilla Fudge's "You Keep Me Hanging On" & Beck, Bogat & Appice's "Superstition" are tied for the best Heavy Metal cover of a Motown tune. Thrash Metal Titans Metallica even broke down into a Bluesy solo on "Orion".

Elmore James passed away from a heat attack May 24, 1963, he was 45.

Another great Return To Forever show in honor of Chick Corea's passing. This is a great show from the transitional period before Al Di Meola and Lenny White join to form the Classic line-up. The over 30 minute performance of "Sometime Ago" is worth the download alone. Absolutely a must have!

Only 5 tracks but it's 5 tracks from Royal Scam. The Royal Scam was Steely Dan's 4th album to go Platinum and 3rd in a row. Countdown To Ecstasy is the only Classic era album not to reach Platinum sales. These 5 outtakes should be a welcome addition to Steely Dan fans.

Weather Report has had a few  people flow through their line up but this is one of my favorites. The band has Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius and Joe Zawinul for one. They also have the some what lesser known Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena, who have played with more people than I could list. So much talent involved and they live up to it. I never caught Weather Report in concert so have a recording from a Michigan show was extra special.

Joe Zawinul passed away September 11, 2007 from a rare skin cancer, he was 75.

Jaco Pastorius passed away at age 35 September 21, 1987 due to injuries from a bar fight.

Here we go another great performance by the band War. I promised our friend Jackson there would be another War show soon, so here you are Jackson! If you liked the last War upload you're going to love this one. This FM recording has more depth than the last soundboard recording. There is definitely more of a balance to the instruments and vocals. The only bummer about this recording is that "Lowrider" wasn't broadcast. The original uploader notes say War had a run of 3 nights at The Wetlands Preserve with 2 shows per night. This is the final nights late show and it kicks ass. As we all know War boots are rare so I would highly recommend downloading this recording!

Yet another post in my Salute To Progressive Rock Bands. The purpose of this salute is not only to post shows from the bigger names in Prog like Genesis or Yes but also lesser known bands. Some of the bands I choose may considered by purists to not be true Progressive Rock bands. I actually couldn't care for purists with restrictive minds on what is or isn't a certain form of music. Progressive Music expands the boundaries and pushes the scope of music further. So here we have another boundary expanding band called Public Service Broadcasting from London, England. Public Service Broadcasting use an array of instruments to make their particular brand of Progressive Music. Electroncs, samples, conventional instruments (such as drums, bass, guitar etc), and not so conventional (banjo, flugelhorn etc). They also use audio clips from public service films, propaganda films, etc. This performance also includes a horn section. If you liked Ozric Tentacles you might like Public Service Broadcasting

After I ripped the waves I only used Goldwave to adjust a couple track marks. No noise reduction, EQing, re-mixing or re-mastering was done.

As someone who didn't know too much about Days Of The New, I had to search a little for the info on this show. The person who supplied me with the disc only wrote the name of the band and FM on the disc. The date given was MA-07.18.98, which was how the songs were tagged on the CD. The set list and location information comes from www.setlist.fm. The line-up information comes from wikipedia.

Not sure why I haven't posted this on the blog yet. I actually thought I had, surprised it hasn't shown up on any blogs yet either since I posted it at the Trader's Den a while ago. I received this with a bunch of CDs and CD-rs from our friend Randy. Randy sent quite a few shows FMs & Pre-FMs that are already on the blog. This is a great sounding recording and you don't see a lot of Days Of The New boots either.

This line-up only release one album, they broke up after the tour for that album. Todd Whitener, Jesse Vest and Matt Taul went on to form Tantric. Travis Meeks formed another line-up of Days Of The New releasing 2 more studio albums. The band's line-up was very fluid after the initial break up. The former band member list is only eclipsed by Parliament/Funkadelic.
