I do not know the equipment used to encode the 2 record vinyl source nor do I know the generation of CD-r that I have. I did no editing or remastering of the recording, the fades were left as they were, the commercials have been deleted.

This show is also known as the No Animation bootleg. I have a couple different versions of this concert and this one IMHO is better because the others have a lack bass. I've included some art work from another version of the show for those who like to have covers.

While researching this show on the net I found that the original Pre-FM vinyl records are selling for about $125.

This show popped up at The Trader's Den just a few days ago. It's a pretty good sounding show with a liitle bit of the higher gen source making itself known. It suffers from a little loss of clarity in the high end and some tape noise. However it is a very enjoyable listen. Steve Miller is on fire for this show. It's been on my player every night since I downloaded it it's that good of a performance, an Absolute Must Have!!!!

Oh by the way that is Journey's Ross Valory beating on the bass guitar. I didn't know he played in The Steve Miller Band before Journey.

This recording comes close to when Aynsley Dunbar leaves Journey. It's actually the start of the one by one loss of everyone, except for Neil Schon, that had anything to do with bringing Journey from No Name to Fame. Next to leave will be Gregg Rolie, then Ross Valory. The music would also go through changes as the members came and went. When Steve Perry came in the music went from a Progressive sounding Hard Rock to a more radio friendly sounding Album Oriented Rock or Arena Rock. This in turn was the reason for Aynsley Dunbar's departure. When Gregg Rolie left and Jonathan Cain came in, the music evolved to a synthesizer driven Pop Rock. When Ross Valory left the band become a full on Adult Contemporary Ballad band. Unfortunately the band has slipped into the same swampy farce as the 1980s Hair Metal scene. With members and former members engaging in law suits over the bands name, Steve Perry released a solo album  and claims he never felt like a real member of the band and refused to take part in their Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame performance...Now that's said, screw it and let's just enjoy some great music....

Rosebud picked a great one for us! This isn't my favorite era of Journey. The first Journey album I bought was Look Into The Future. The last one was Captured. We do however now have the complete Journey catalog. I was not into the Escape release but up to the last gig Journey was one hell of a live band (yes was, they are nowhere near that now, they are not even Journey). Steve Perry was a great front man, one of the best actually. His energy never slipped, I mean the guy never used a mic stand. He picked it up and ran, literally, around the stage like a man possessed. The band itself contained some great live musicians, able to deliver every song to maximum effect every single night.

The flac file set is a little large so I have divided it in 22 parts. Each part will open separately.

When I received this show in flac from a Trader, it was in Japanese. I had to decode the flacs and re-encode them. My computer could not play them in Japanese. I renamed the files but still could not play them until I decoded then re-encoded the flac files.

For our next post of our Tribute To Rosebud's Favorite Singers is another from Steve Perry & Journey. Yet again live in Tokyo, Japan. Jonathan Cain is now in the line up, becoming a key song writer. Jonathan Cain would co-write every song released by Journey from the Escape album to Trial By Fire. He actually wrote more songs than Neal Schon in this period. For those that love this period of Journey you'll love this hit filled show.

The next installment of Rosebud's Salute To Here Favorite Singers we have Steve Perry with Journey. This recording is after the departure of drummer Aynsley Dunbar but before Greg Rolie's departure (pun unintended JD). The addition of Steve Perry came with a change in sound that some early fans were not happy with. The shift from Progressive Rock leaning instrumentals to Arena Rock Anthems brought bigger sales and hits.

Steve Perry made his live debut with Journey October of 1977. The next 10 years would be a whirlwind of bigger hits, bigger sales and bigger tours. With Greg Rolie leaving the band after one more studio album and tour. He would pick his own replacement while on that tour. The opening act was The Babys (I saw that tour in Detroit, the show was awesome JD), and their keyboard player Jonathan Cain was auditioning without even knowing. With Cain onboard, the music went even further away from their original sound. Some fans, myself included, decided it was time to jump ship. Others, like Rosebud, carried on with every shift the band made.

After Greg Rolie left the sets no longer featured songs from the earlier Progressive period of the band. The hits would still roll in...

Journey was formed by Neil Schon & Greg Rolie after leaving Santana.

When Neil Schon was an up & coming guitarist in the California music scene, 2 very gifted guitarists wanted him in their band. Carlos Santana wanted to add a fuller guitar sound to the live shows, plus give himself a guitar player to play off of, to stretch his abilities.

The other guitar player was non other than Eric Clapton who wanted Neil Schon to join his band Derek & The Dominoes. Neil chose to join Santana. 

Eric Clapton of course was guitarist for The Yardbirds before Jimmy Page joined the band.

This tape was made directly from the board prior to the FM feed made by the radio station, making this a Pre-FM Soundboard recording.

Between September 28, 1971 to October 12, 1971 due to serious tensions between members, the band goes on tour without Carlos Santana. Carlos rejoined the tour October 12, 1971. This is actually the first show with out Carlos. A seventeen year old Neil Schon would be thrown to the lions, entrusted to carry the lead guitar spotlight alone. Neil was no average seventeen year old guitar player. Neil had turned down an invitation to join Eric Clapton in his band Derek & The Dominoes before joining Santana. This show is often traded with the wrong date and location of Exhibition Hall, Osaka, Japan, October 10th, 1980. The real date is the one stated above in the show description. I have a couple versions of this DVD and this one is an audio upgrade for sure. All the DVDs available previously were mono TV soundboard recordings while this is a stereo mix. There are a couple mono patches but these are mostly during audience noise and don't take from the enjoyment of this classic concert. After this tour Greg Rolie would leave to be replaced by Johnathon Cain. The transformation to an adult oriented arena rock band would be complete. Gone would be the hard rock/prog rock leanings of the original band. At least we get to hear the instrumental "Kohoutek" and Greg belt out "Of A Life Time" one last time.

The Babys would break up at the end of this tour. During the tour the band recorded their final album On The Edge. Oddly enough it was in Ohio that it all came to an end. On December 9 1980 John Waite was pulled from the stage by a fan seriously injuring his knee. The band performed in Akron Ohio and cancelled the remainder of the tour. The band broke up after that, with their label releasing On The Edge posthumously.

John Waite went on to a successful solo career. Tony Brock went on to drum for Rod Stewart and produce both Jimmie Barnes and Keith Urban. Wally Stocker went on to play guitar for Rod Stewart, Air Supply and Jerry Shirley's Humble Pie. Jonathan Cain went on to join Journey. The Babys had served as opening act to Greg Rolie's last tour with Journey. Greg admitted after leaving the group, that during the tour while preparing his exit, he would watch Cain's keyboard solo from the wings. This served as Cain's audition without even knowing he was being scouted to join Journey by the bands own keyboardist.

The person I got this from thought it was a Pre-FM recording because of the clean sound. During the introduction the hoist can be heard saying a live as it happens concert. There fore this is actually a very fine FM recording.
