- Also A Big Thank You to Emperor Nobody who did a digitization of this same concert but from the Budweiser Concert Hour transcription disc. Included in his upload was a poster with proof of the recording date and guests. He also included some photos from the gig which confirm that Michael Jackson actually participated and sang co-lead vocals with Ashford & Simpson on "Stuff Like That"
Known Faults:
- No cue sheet included with the records when purchased.
- Side three has a scratch at the beginning which gives a thumping noise each time the needle hits it. I did my best to hide that sound but some artifacts of it are left because to go any farther with noise reduction resulted in a "too prosessed sounding" section.
- A couple times during the concert Quincy Jone's sampler for his keyboard fails and you get some buzzing noises before he can fix it. For some reason Westwood One did not fix this in post production.
Recording Notes:
- The show host never identifies himself.
- There is a locked groove show promo at the end of Side Two. It was encoded and moved to the end of the program.
- The concert took place in an outside sports arena. This resulted in some wind noise through the on stage mics.
- At the beginning of "One Hundred Ways" James Ingram's mic is too low making him a little hard to hear but for some reason it was not fixed in post production by Westwood One
Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LP prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a felt disc cleaner was used on the record prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable balanced: Needle Tracking, Azimuth, Pressure & Antiskid Dialed In: Soundcard stereo field maximized: Goldwave always set to record while filtering any offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.
- To deal with some of the scratches in the surface of Side 3 an anti-skid level of 3 had to be used. Normally my anti-skid is set at 1.5.
- A Highpass filter with an initial cut off of 30khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lower the wind noise in the onstage mics.
Other Notes:
- This concert was also released by Westwood One as the highly sought (and expensive) Budweiser Concert Hour Show #82-18.
- This version of the concert is the longer version of the 2 versions released, having one more song, the Grammy and Acadamy Award Winning song "Chariots Of Fire (Dance Version)" from the Motion Picture Soundtrack.
- This version of the concert, Westwood One Concerts & Specials #WPC-83-9, is from the rare Pop Concert Series. Some of these shows were concerts and some artist profiles. Some were even released as the Startrak Profile Series and Startrak Profile - In Concert Series. The Collective Of Live Music is just starting to explore this series in depth.
- Once again on a Westwood One Concerts & Specials sow the host never identifies himself. I am starting to think this is a regular occurrence with the Pop Concert Series since so far it has happened on all I have encoded.
- Ernie Watts toured with The Rolling Stones, Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, Tom Coster, and former Journey drummer Steve Smith's jazz band. The famous saxophone in the "Theme Song From Night Court" was played by Ernie Watts. Saxophone player Ernie Watts also played on soundtracks for Grease, and The Color Purple.
