JustDave's notes:
- These are all complete songs not like "When I Come Down" or "The Rebel" which were bits of complete tracks. These are demos submited to labels for consideration. The Black Sabbath sounds, vibes and tones were still embrionic at this point.
- "Blue Suede Shoes" is the Carl Perkins song made extra famous due to an Elvis Presley cover version. While it sounds like the version on the Musicladen performance it has extra "speaking" before and after by I'm assuming Ozzy.
- "Song For Jim" was used by Earth and early Black Sabbath as the live vehicle for Bill Ward's drum solo. They would use both flute and guitar live.
- "Wicked (Demo)" is the demo version of "Wicked World" and uses the lyrics that Ozzy sings on the Live At Last version.
- "Warning" is an early demo version of the song that would end up on Black Sabbath's first album.

This is going to be The Best 2 Hours Black Sabbath Fans will spend after downloading (that is until some else way cooler happens of course). It's 1 CD worth of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1976 and a full length 2CDs worth of Fresno, California, 1978. A full length Never Say Die Show that is not the London show from the video. This is a nice collection for all Black Sabbath listeners. I loved it so did Rosebud, that's why it's a Rosebud Pick.

This is the complete set from Black Sabbath at the first California Jam. It is however a little edited as some of Ozzy's on stage banter has been censored. Cannibis Confusion is regarded as the best sounding source of the recording however the boot Metal Mess contains the unedited stage banter. This comes from Rosebud's silver CD and is one of the first bootlegs I ever bought her. That's right I payed like $50 US for it, but now you won't have to.

The sound on the first song "Hard Driver" is a little sloppy as the radio and the stage sound man try to quickly adjust the faders, it does improve. This would have been the day to be at this annual festival. The main stage headliner was Stevie Ray Vaughan. Also on the bill was The Stray Cats, Dave Mason, and Molly Hatchet touring for their last album to feature vocalist Danny Joe Brown. I personally never attended a Badlands concert. I actually attended a few shows they were the opening act for but missed them each time. That is why I love having the shows that I do. It's odd, my least favorite era of Ozzy Osbourne is with Jake on guitar. I saw Ozzy twice with Jake. The Bark At The Moon tour with Motley Crue & Ratt. Then The Ultimate Sin tour with Metallica. On Bark At The Moon the keyboards were just too dominating in the mix, and Ultimate Sin was too Hair Metal sounding. I love Jake's playing with Badlands, he's perfect for this Bluesy Hard Rock sound.

From the Retirement Sucks Tour, Geezer still in the line-up but would leave again. Dean Castronovo would also split. I always love hearing Ozzy songs with Geezer on bass. Bob Daisley writes some good stuff no denying, but I am sorry I love Geezer's playing that much more. He plays around with the riff on anything he plays. He doesn't seem to change Bob's riffs much. I like Dean Castronovo's druming too. His playing on Ozmosis is great but his playing on Geezer's G//Z/R debut Plastic Planet that really impressed me.

G//Z/R was an Industrial Death Metal band that also featured Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory on vocals. I saw them play live on a very short promo tour. When they started playing their first song plaster fell from the theater's ceiling. A mosh pit broke out then parted as a stage diver was in mid air. He got up after landing on my friend who was drunk and passed out in the pit. Me and another from our group picked up our buddy and put him in the car for safe keeping then quickly heading back in. After the show I stopped at the merch table to buy a shirt. Behind the table was Geezer's wife, sitting next to her was Geezer. I asked for an autograph and he gave it, then handed me a clip board and says "Now gimme your's". It was the mailing list, so I signed up. Every month for 2 years I received a hand written note from Mrs. Butler and a sheet detailing what was going on with Geezer's solo project. When Burton C. Bell left to go back to Fear Factory the fan club got a request for demo tapes for auditions to replace Bell. I sent mine because hey why not? I received a hand written letter from Geezer thanking me for my submission but....he was going with Clark Brown. I don't care I got a hand written rejection letter from Geezer....Other musicians understand lol!!!

The last encoding suffered from distortion due to the volume from tape to computer was to loud. It also was not the complete tapes either. This fresh transfer is complete from open to close. - Preservation being key tapes are presented as is with no sound tampering.
- Cross fades between sets to give a flow to the tapes, like a broadcast should be.
- No cross fade between Bon Jovi & All-Star Jam because one cuts out the other cuts in.

This FM Broadcast Recording has a different tone and a more vocal forward mix that the JustDave version of the show. We think some may prefer it's mix so it is presented as well.

There is this FM tape that is the recording of Sam Elliot's Mustache. It is of the FM via Satellite Broadcast that JustDave's tapes are but have a different tone to them. Draftervoi is in possession of Westwood One In Concert # IC 90-34. This recording from Mike Millard had gone largely uncirculated due to the fact that Mike himself gave the recording a poor rating. From what people say he was his own worst critic (aren't we all). The recording is anything but poor, the audience is a little rowdy, which is why I give it a Very Good Audience rating rather than an Excellent Audience Recording rating.

This is a great show from this tour, which was cut short by the way, an accident with Ozzy on a motorcycle, I mean the guy didn't learn his lesson either given his quad runner accident in the early 2000s. This show was actually recorded as a favor to Mike Millard's concert going friend/recording partner Jim. Mike actually decided to record the opening act Ruby Starr & Grey Ghost, a Southern Rock band fronted by Black Oak Arkansas backup singer Ruby Starr. It's a nice sounding boot from the Prince Of Darkness. I like this line-up as well, I've seen them at a few Ozzfests, they are a great live unit. They used to play a medley of Ozzy era Black Sabbath songs in the middle of "Suicide Solution". It was kind of Ozzy's idea, he told the band that he didn't want a featured guitar solo. Hence the medley was invented. It had a funky beat ala Faith No More or Infectious Groves, Joe Holmes is Ozzy's under rated guitar player for the way he played Ozzy Sabbath material across those funky rhythms. Everyone was into it so hey Ozzy was right on that. The guitar solo did come back after Zakk Wylde returned to the fold.

One could argue that the set list is a little stale for this tour. The only non Ozzy live staple is "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". It is not a usual choice for Ozzy since the high pitch vocal is hard on/for Ozzy's voice. Ozzy was on the road a lot between Ozzmosis and Down To Earth. Six years between studio albums is a long time. I do remember Ozzy and the band playing around with the sets because of the lack of new material. I remember one Ozzfest the keyboard player (not sure which one) was visible on stage, stage right front, in the top of a skull. The set list that night (I'm sure every night of that tour) was keyboard heavy. I swear as I was lighting a big doobie the show opened to "Diary Of A Madman". It was quite some time ago so it's blurry but I am pretty sure they actually played it. None of Mine and Rosebud's friends were there that night so I can't verify the memory.....

For this postings entry into our History Of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Rosebud chose The Mighty Metal Gods Black Sabbath (Dave bows and flashes the horns) Rosebud had this to say.....

Beside this being the first bootleg Dave ever bought me I picked this because Black Sabbath helped write the book on Heavy Metal....So many bands have been influenced by them. Blue Oytster Cult, Saint Vitus, Candlemass, and even Guns And Roses...Dave read me interviews where B.O.C said they wrote "Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll" to challenge Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" for Heavy Metal Radio Anthem Power...He then demonstrated how the songs riff is the same as Black Sabbath's "The Wizard"...To show me this he played B.O.C. then Rob Hallford's version of "The Wizard" on Nativity In Black. Rob & The Bullring Brummies slowed the song more than it's normally played...It sounds like a heavy cover of "Cities On Flame" (compare them, it's true JD). He then showed me how Guns And Roses slowed down the riff from "Zero The Hero" for the main riff or "Paradise City" (yep true again!)

This is a remastered version of the same show as the bootleg The Drunkin' Show. The sound of this recording is really good. Ozzy's voice sounds really good as well, seeing how drunk her is rumored to have been at this show. You can actually hear Ozzy say off mic "..I feel like I'm gonna vomit..". This really is one of the best sounding soundboard recordings from the Jake E. Lee era (there may or not be better performances). It could be a live album with it's warts and all. Myself I prefer the warts and all concept of a live album. Saying that I don't care if a band goes into the studio and polishes up a live performance for release. I do however prefer the unpolished bootleg approach. My personal favorite Classic Rock Era Live Albums are Deep Purple's Made In Japan & Grand Funk Railroad's Live Album. Neither of these live albums have overdubs, they are the only 2 that come to my mind at the time, I know there is not many. Black Sabbath's Live At Last had no overdub's (the band had no say in i's release) but I don't consider the 1980's to be Classic Rock Era (I mean some of the keyboard and drum sounds can be anoying to say the least.)

The complete soundboard recording from the show recorded for King Biscuit Flower Hour and The Ultimate Ozzy Home Video VHS/Laser Disc release. This release has been deleted from Ozzy's catalog, as well as anything with the song "Shot In The Dark". This includes The Ultimate Sin, Just Say Ozzy E.P. and Live & Loud. The best of compilation The Ozzman Cometh was re-released with "Shot In The Dark" removed. These live versions of "Ultimate Sin", "Never Know Why" & "Thank God For The Bomb" have been released on the Prince Of Darkness Box Set. The Box Set covers the Jake E. Lee years sparsely with only 7 songs representing that era. This bootleg throws in a recording of the 1986 Monsters Of Rock Festival. This is a different source than the previous '86 Monsters Of Rock post I made much earlier on this site.

I downloaded this from Purple Hippies a site I highly recommend for Deep Purple, Rainbow, Dio, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake and Michael Schenker bootlegs.

The original uploader uploaded each show separately, so I put them together, found the artwork online, now none of us has to pay the ridiculous price copies of this bootleg are going for (and it's not cheep).

This is a nice collection of performances by the "Supergroup" formed by former members of Black Sabbath and the Ozzy Osbourne Band. Rather ironic actually that another former singer from Black Sabbath would form a band with a former Ozzy Osbourne guitar slinger. Ray Gillan had replaced Glenn Hughes during Black Sabbath's Seventh Star Tour. During the sessions for Eternal Idol Ray and Eric jumped ship. Ray, Eric & Jake added Greg Chaisson and Badlands was formed. This compilation is from the bands tour to promote their first album. The band was still fresh but the harmony was already dying. Eric Singer left before the recording of the second album to join Kiss. Ray Gillan left Badlands before the 3rd album demo sessions. Just 5 years after forming Badlands, Ray Gillan would die from AIDS related causes

Ray Gillan died of A.I.D.S. related complications December 1, 1993, he was 34.

Jake E. Lee went on to play with Wicked Alliance & Red Dragon Cartel

Greg Chaisson went on to play with a few other bands even Red Dragon Cartel but is semi-retired after a bought with cancer.

Eric Singer is now impersonating a very famous cat!

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to edit track marks and adjust the volume. There is some fuzz between "Crazy Train" and "Paranoid", it sounds like a broadcast noise. There is no music lost as it occures between the tracks.

This DVD version of Ozzy Osbourne's set from The Moscow Music & Peace Festival has more songs on it than my FM version shared here. However the FM version does have a better sound.

Heavy Metal Roots & Branches #17

Simply put Black Sabbath was the first Heavy Metal band. All Metal Heads agree that Black Sabbath was the band that started it all. Ian Gillan has said that (to paraphrase) until Black Sabbath, everyone thought being heavy meant playing louder. Black Sabbath took the Blues Rock that the heavier bands such as Vanilla Fudge and Cream played and accented the punch of the rhythm, added lyrics that were full of darker imagery reflecting the world at that time and stripped the riff to it's core accenting the scream and wail of the guitar. Black Sabbath's music was a complete opposite to the Groovy Hippy everything is beautiful, daisy chains and and LSD dreams that was popular. Black Sabbath screamed about war, heroin, pollution, nightmares, and the meaningless existence of  the oppressed and downtrodden. Black Sabbath's music was so important to the development of the genre of Heavy Metal that their influence can be heard in every single band and sub-genre of Modern Heavy Metal.

This soundboard recording comes from just before Paranoid's release. The album was recorded and would be released in September in just 18 days. Ozzy still sings some  alternate lyrics to some of the songs from that album. The song Paranoid, not yet released as a single,  is used to open the set instead of close like in later years. The recording itself has been remastered and is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, so download and enjoy this piece of Heavy Metal history.

The title "Ozzymosis Sessions" is slightly misleading. Although all of these recordings are related to the "Ozzmosis" album, they are not actually from the sessions for "Ozzmosis". The tracks on this disc come from two projects that preceded the "Ozzmosis" sessions. ..

A. "Ozzyland Sessions" (1993/94) (1-9)

...nine tracks are from sessions Ozzy did with songwriter/producer Mark Hudson (fame Aerosmith & Ringo Starr) for an as-of-yet unreleased album called "OZZYLAND". These sessions most likely took place some time in 1993 or 1994. It is not known where they were recorded.

B. "Michael Wagner Sessions" (1992) (10-12)

...three tracks come from sessions done with engineer/producer Michael Wagner in London in 1992. Wagner was hired by Ozzy's record label to produce the intended follow up to "No More Tears". They told him they wanted an album exactly like "No More Tears". Eventually the record company changed their minds and wanted the album to sound more in line with the grunge movement so Wagner was fired and the sessions with him were abandoned. The record execs hired Soundgarden producer Michael Beinhorn who produced Ozzmosis.
