Computor Went Boom!! @#/%*$ 2020!!

 Well this year keeps cranking out the hits. The extended time between posts this time was the unexpected crashing of my computer. Thing was working fine, I shut it off, then went back later to work again and the big bad blue screen say that booting up was unsuccessful. This was the 2nd computer I had die on me in 2020. My "download machine" quit working a couple months ago (I think the power supply went). So not wanting to spend the money on a new power supply (or tearing into it without doing some modifications) I started using my music computer (built mainly for music editing and listening). So it went down.

When I bought it I was like oh HP support assistant software included, ok. It includes a built in recovery system. It took a little time but I figured out how to get the recovery system to work but finally had the system rebooted. The recovery system resets the operating system to original factory so I had to re-install my programs. I got the system up and running like it just came out of the box. It crashed 2 more times. It was really frustrating to have finished just to have it not boot up the next day.

I think I have it figured out, each time it happened was shortly after my computer ran the Windows 7 Roll Out Update For 2020. I've come to believe that the damn thing has a time bomb in it to make Windows 7 fail so you have to upgrade to Windows 10. Apple did it more than once, Bill Gates is not above anything to make a dollar.

Anyway we have some new stuff posted. More Experimental/Improvisational Jazz from Nels Cline Singers this time with the addition of The Rova Saxophone Quartet. Another Third World Jazz show from Jon Hassel & Maarifa Street.

A double dose of Ronnie James Dio for Rosebud's Salute to Her Favorite Singers. A 3 CD set that collects together 3 Hammersmith Oden shows. Also a 3 CD set of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow rehearsing for their 1976 World Tour.

For my salute to Prog-Rock another show from ELP side project 3's only US tour. Then a Jem of a boot with 2 Classic British Prog Bands Caravan & Gong (a British/French outfit actually). 

We also have our first post from Detroit's Was(Not Was). A music project from famous producer Don Was. This is a classic BBC broadcast and is offered in tribute to lead vocalist Hillard "Sweet Pea" Atkinson who died May 5, 2020 from a heat attack.

Then for good measure we threw in a 2018 Rock Hard Festival appearance from Uli Jon Roth.

It's so hard to really explain Detroit's Was(Not Was) to the uninitiated. When I try to, I'll say take some great Funk, Soul, and R & B rhythms and harmonies. That rich soulful singing perfected by the likes of David Ruffin. Add to that a little electronica (bits). Lyrics so tongue in cheek Frank Zappa would be proud, delivered completely serious. All of that filtered through a crystal clear Don Was production. That's as close as I can get then I pop in a CD. That's truly the only way. But since it's free just download this one for one kick ass version of The Temptations Smash "Pappa Was A Rollin' Stone". Oh yeah I almost forgot they had a hit MTV video and single with "Walk The Dinosaur".

I originally downloaded this show from the Live Jazz Lounge, a great site for unreleased Jazz shows. I have downloaded quite a lot of music from there and have shared a few of them. I really recommend my Jazz friends visit the lounge to see if there is anything you might want. There most likely will be.

As for this particular show, it's 55 minutes of great Ambient Jazz. I love listening to Jon Hassel music with the lights dimmed, some nice weed and a glass of mead or wine. If you liked the last Jon Hassell show I posted or the previous Nils Petter Molvær shows your going to like this one too.

Continuing with my salute to Progressive Rock Bands, we have a double shot of Prog on one boot with Caravan & Gong. 2 bands you don't here half as much as you do Yes, Genesis or E.L.P. The British Isles really took the lead when it comes to Progressive Rock. Not to say that other countries didn't have some Great Prog-Rockers but from my own ear's perspective it seems like the British Prog scene just birthed so many talented bands and new sounds (not to mention giving us the genre to begin with).

Rosebud's Tribute To Her Favorite Singers continues with The Godfather Of Heavy Metal Ronnie James Dio, or Dio as his fans call him. Dio, a name  when mentioned in Hard Rock/Heavy Metal circles gets you a flash of the Meloik and story of a first Dio concert experience. Some will say it was with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Some will say it was fronting the mighty return of Black Sabbath (Me included JD). Then there are those who say it was fronting his eponymously named solo outfit Dio. A chosen few can say they saw the man fronting Elf. A rare few can say it was as Ronnie Dio fronting the Doo Wop group Ronnie & The Red Caps. No matter where and when they saw him, it was always agreed the man had a presence larger than his 5 foot 4 inch frame. His distinctive voice, phrasing, and inflections were boosted by a power that most singers could not muster on their best day.

This bad ass 3 CD set collects together 3 killer Dio performances at The London Hammersmith Odeon. 1 with Vivian Campbell on guitar, 2 with Craig Goldie. All 3 are a nice mix of Dio's career from Rainbow, through Black Sabbath, to his solo career. I remember when I first heard the Holy Diver album. My friend we called Tripper (not because of LSD though) brought it over to my house the same day I had bought Motörhead's Another Perfect Day. We smoked a couple joints and listened to the Motörhead first. Neither one of us loved it on the first listen (it's 1 of my top 5 of Motörhead now0. It was a bit of a change of direction, more melodic. We then put on Holy Diver, it was actually a love at first sound thing for both of us. I did comment it was a bit more commercial than his Black Sabbath material (just like Ozzy). We both, however, agreed it was the perfect bridge between his Rainbow and Sabbath music. Like any fanatic of Ronnie James Dio, I was more than pleased to find that live it was just that. All 3 sets here are loaded with Rainbow, Sabbath and Dio tunes. Enjoy!!

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit a couple track marks. No EQ, noise reduction or remastering was needed. The DVD had lossy audio so I used Goldwave to encode the waves to MP3 320kbps.

Uli Jon Roth aka Ulrich Roth played guitar for The Scorpions from 1974 to 1978. Uli played lead guitar on all releases from Fly To The Rainbow to The Tokyo Tapes live album. Uli then left the band and formed the band Electric Sun. Fans were of course upset, those 5 albums had earned Scorpions a nice sized cult following. To this day that cult following still follows Uli Jon Roth's career. The split of course gave Uli a solo career plus allowed The Scorpions to evolve into the hit making 1980's Metal Icons that they are.

This recording catches Uli cranking out a set of Scorpions classics from his era. "The Sails Of Charon", "Fly To The Rainbow", & "In Trance" to name a few. Of course Uli throws in 2 covers of his idol, Jimi Hendrix. "Little Wing" & Jimi's cover of the Bob Dylan penned "All Along The Watchtower" finish of this set. All Scorpions fans who haven't heard a lot of the older material should check this one out. All fans who, like me, have been there since Lonesome Crow are going to love this show!!
