It's so hard to really explain Detroit's Was(Not Was) to the uninitiated. When I try to, I'll say take some great Funk, Soul, and R & B rhythms and harmonies. That rich soulful singing perfected by the likes of David Ruffin. Add to that a little electronica (bits). Lyrics so tongue in cheek Frank Zappa would be proud, delivered completely serious. All of that filtered through a crystal clear Don Was production. That's as close as I can get then I pop in a CD. That's truly the only way. But since it's free just download this one for one kick ass version of The Temptations Smash "Pappa Was A Rollin' Stone". Oh yeah I almost forgot they had a hit MTV video and single with "Walk The Dinosaur".

Thank you so much for this rare jewel! I will be flipping my lid and rollin by the record machine tooo-nite!
ReplyDeleteYou're quite welcome! I actually met Don Was. My band recorded our first album at Grand Funk Railroad's studio The Swamp. Ted Nugent was recording there during the week, his equipment was in the corner of the huge main suite. After finishing the tracking, we decided we didn't want to mix there due to it not having an automated board. So we went to Peal Sound and mixed 3 tracks on the weekend. We told them we would see them the next weekend. That was when we were told Ted Nugent had bumped us because he wanted to work on the weekends. So we booked some time at Sound Suite which has been owned by Don Was since the 1970's Punk scene. We worked 2 more days then went to confirm our booking for the next weekend. Our engineer said that the owner wanted to speak to us about that. Don tells us that Ted Nugent decided he didn't like the drum room at Peal Sound and wants to book the next few weekend. He said he told Ted he couldn't have the weekend because Psychosis had booked it. Ted asked Don who are Psychosis in a rather Tedly way. Don says I told him the band that booked my only free suite for the next 2 weekends. Don is a real stand up guy, his word is a contract. You have to respect that.
DeleteSorry to Ramble On.

Thanks a lot for this. Was (Not Was) shows are hard to find on the net.
ReplyDeleteI remember back in the mid-80s I found a Was (Not Was) cassette in the bargain bin at a mall record store. I had never heard of them, but I saw that the album featured guest appearances from Ozzy Osbourne, Mitch Ryder, and Mel Torme. I said to myself, I've gotta check this out. I bought the cassette, took it home, put it in the player, and LOVED it! I've been a fan ever since. Not a bad deal for about $1!
Thanks again for this and for all your efforts.

You're welcome Greatscott67 I hope you enjoy the show. We have another one coming up soon. The tape you bought was their 2nd album and major label debut Born To Laugh At Tornadoes. A great album. Once you have heard Ozzy sing Shake Your Head you kind of see him a little differently when hes on stage jumping around like a frog during Paranoid. My first album of theirs was their first album. I have collected quite a few of their releases including 12 inch vinyl singles. I have a large collection of Motor City music. Enjoy the tunes!!
