This matrix recording from a 1987 Motown Review brings our Detroit Music Tribute into our next loose theme here at The New JDP. We ill be bringing you a bunch of bootlegs from musicians that we have lost to the great gig in the sky. This fine recording features performances from some of the artists who made Motown Records what it was in the 1960's & 1970's. David Rufin and Eddie Kendricks were founding members of The Temptations, a band that recorded many hits for the label. We lost David Ruffin first at the age of 50 on June 1, 1991 to a drug overdose. We lost Eddie Kendicks on October 5, 1992 at the age of 52 to complications from lung cancer. Mary Wells, who was the third female singer to be signed to Motown, became known as The First Lady of Motown after Berry Gordie called her that in an interview. We lost Mary Wells July 26, 1992, at the age of 49, from pneumonia due to complications from laryngeal cancer. The disease had stolen her voice years before. Before her death Wells testified, in a whisper, before the United States Congress to urge government funding for cancer research.

Great soundboard recording from the short lived Temptations Reunion Tour. The tour was a great idea but David Ruffin was by this time heavily addicted to crack cocaine and undependable causing the band to be fined every time he missed a gig. Also Eddie Kendricks voice was suffering from years of smoking.

David Ruffin died June 1, 1991 from a cocaine overdose, he was 50.

Eddie Kendricks died October 5, 1992 from lung cancer, he was 52.

Melvin Franklin died February 23, 1995 after suffering a series of seizures, he fell into a coma and passed away 6 days later, he was 52.

Richard Street died February 27, 2013, from a pulmonary embolism, he was 70.

Tommy "Alto Reed" Cartmell passed away from colon cancer December 30, 2020, he was 72.

As a lot of you who follow this blog know Bob Seger's music is very special to me. My childhood memories are rapped with his songs. One of my first concerts was Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band at Cobo Hall Arena. It was the Stranger In Town Tour, the opening act was a Southern Rock Band called Toby Beau. I went to this show with my best friend/cousin/partner in crime Jamie. His Mom & Dad and 2 more sets of Aunt & Uncles were going and had 2 extra tickets. I had snuck out in 1976 to see Kiss at Cobo. I also snuck out in 1978 to see Black Sabbath at Cobo with Van Halen, I was done for.

The following year I joined my first Garage/Basement band, my cousin Jamie went to the audition with me. He went to almost every audition with me. When my band Psychosis started touring Jamie was my roadie & personal security. When we lost him to a motorcycle accident it was too much. At first I couldn't listen to music for a while. Everything seemed to stir up to many memories. I almost quit the blog too (true story JD). Music finally brought me out of my depression. Bob Seger music especially, well Jamie gets to meet Alto Reed now. Rock & Roll Heaven just got another Bad Ass Sax Player....I always wanted to see Clarence Clemons & Alto Reed jamming together!! Jamie could be their roadie.

There were 3 bonus studio tracks on the CD-r "I'm So Glad", "Who Is That Girl", and "Get The Picture". Each were early A-Square Label singles. Theses singles have been re-released on A-Square Of Course: The Story Of Michigan's Legendary A-Square Records, a single CD 25 song compilation. Those songs were removed from this upload. Allegedly this recording was actually leaked to Motor City music stores by Gary Quackenbush from his master. Gary Quackenbush was actively playing around Detroit when this recording surfaced on CD-r. He played around Detroit for a couple years in the 1990s and issued bootlegs of all SRC material on CD-r. I own all their albums, Initial pressings of them all I bought off an SRC Groupie my Aunt Red knew.

SRC came together when former members of the Detroit bands, The Chosen Few and The Fugitives joined forces in The Scot Richard Case. The band issued a few singles on the Motor City's legendary A-Square Records. The bands cover of "I'm So Glad" was so popular in the Motor City that most Detroiters believed that Cream had copied it off of The Scot Richard Case. The success of these singles and the bands reputation as a great live act earned the band attention from Capitol Records. When the band issued it's first full length album they had shortened the name to SRC. The band had also changed it's style from Rock to Progressive Rock. The first SRC album can now sound a little Spinal Tap-ish, but was at the time a great representation of Progressive/Psychedelic Rock. The band released 3 albums while still active. In the 1990's there was a revival in the popularity of SRC and the album Lost Masters was released which contained most of the unreleased material that the band had in he vaults. The original 3 albums were remastered and released on CD, as well as the greatest hits compilation Black Sheep (the CD's are out of print but worth seeking out). SRC were one of the Motor City's acts thought destined for stardom but never really caught on in the USA. The band did have a large following in the British Isles, which is were the re-issued CD's actually came from. Peter Gabriel actually admitted to wearing out the grooves of his first copy of the bands debut album.The band was the first in the Motor City to own their own PA, light rig and studio, all of which the band used to rent to other local artists.

Alice Cooper (Vincent Furnier) born in Detroit but his family moved to Arizona when he was quite young. It was there that the idea of a band came to the minds of the teens who would become Alice Cooper. The audiences in Arizona didn't quite understand. They moved to California were the scene didn't understand them. Frank Zappa signed them because of that fact. 2 albums released by Frank Zappa's label did nothing to help. It wasn't till the band moved back to Detroit that anyone figured it out. It was Bob Ezrin, he moved them to North Pontiac (about 2 miles from my new house) to practice & write. The result was the Legendary Love It To Death.

Switch to Western Wayne County where a young teen boy cleaning his Uncle's car for spending change finds a home taped 8-track tape that just said Alice Cooper Mix on it. I took it into my bedroom and stuck it into my stereo and sat back to here a band my Mom tried real hard not to let me hear. I could listen to almost anything without any hassle but Alice Cooper were forbidden. It was because of my parents misconceptions about the song "Dead Babies". It didn't help that my little sister died when she was only 15 minutes old due to my Dad's contact with Agent Orange in Viet Nam. The music just blew me for a loop. So heavy in emotion and tone. The lyrics about anything and everything a young teenager questioned in the 1970s. I was hooked to my parents dismay. I eventually educated them about the subject matter and how Alice was a character. My Mom became a fan of Alice Cooper ballads like "I'll Never Cry".

Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove test tone on Side A for the DJ to set levels before broadcasting the show, it has not been encoded.
- There are two locked groove show promo beds at the end of Side A. One with a voiceoverby Bill Minkin and one without, they have been encoded and moved to the end of the program.

Known Faults:
- On Side A on the lead in groove there is a dimple that causes loud bumps which are no longer heard after the program starts.
- On Side B during The Cruzados' performance, feel-able scar that causes loud pops throughout "Motorcycle Girl"
- The 2 Pioneer Commercials are marred by some surface noise that could only be lessened not cleared but are listenable.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.
- The loud bumps from the known faults section was silenced by a simple fade in.
- The loud pops during The Cruzados' performance of "Motorcycle Girl" were silenced manually.

Other Notes:
- The video of Cruzados performing "Motorcycle Girl" was all I had heard of the band for a long time. Until the early days of the internet and NAPSTER when I was able to download a bunch of their songs.
- Marshall Crenshaw was one of those bands I used to skip out of school to catch live for free at Hart Plaza in Detroit right off the Detroit River waterfront. It was kick ass to see him rise to fame with his music and his portrayal of Buddy Holly in the movie LA BAMBA.
- As far as I can tell neither show has been released. Marshall Crenshaw released a DVD called Live At The Stone Pony but that was recorded at a later date.
- After the break up of The Cruzados lead vocalist Tito Larriva formed Tito And The Tarantula. That band appeared in Quentin Tarentino's From Dusk Till Dawn as the Vampire Band in the bar.
- Summers On The Beach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida was a very popular concert club during the 1980s. From what I can tell from the internet it was a Rock and Heavy Metal Club. The club has a Facebook page with a lot of photos but I couldn't spend enough time going through it to see if there was anything on The Cruzados' gig there which was for a DJ Convention.

Known Faults:
- Although a beautiful set of vinyl, there are some marks here and there that made some thumps.
- There may be some little spots here and there that could not be cleaned up without acually marring the sound in a different way so they were left alone.
- There is a dimple thump at the beginning of track 01 "King Biscuit Flower Hour #KB-501 Intro & Break" that could not be removed without leaving an "artifact" from the editing that sounds as bad as the thump so it was left alone.

Recording Notes:
- There is a test tone at the beginning of side A for DJs to set levels in the studio before airing the program, it was not encoded
- There was no show promos included in this set.
- There was no "King Biscuit Intro" after commercial number 1, instead the House MC introduces The Romantics.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.

Other Notes:
- The Romantics were the most successful band to emerge from Detroit's initial New Wave/Power Pop/Punk scene releasing 5 National Albums on Nemperor Records spawning 11 National Singles including the Billboard Number 1 "Talking In Your Sleep"
- When The Romantics portion of this show was recorded they were riding on the success of the album In Heat and it's single "Talking In Your Sleep".
- The Romantics could not match the success of In Heat with it's follow up. The band's line up started to fluctuate and their label would lose interest dropping them in 1986 due to poor album and concert ticket sales.
- The Nick Heyward set comes during his debut tour as a solo artist, having been dismissed from Haircut 100 in January 1983.
- Nick Heyward already had recorded some solo tracks already and decided to finish the album and go solo.
- Nick's set is only 4 songs 2 of which are from his album with Haircut 100.
- "Little Latin Lupe Lou", first recorded by The Righteous Brothers, became a Punk Rock staple after The Kingsmen's  1964 single of the song was rediscovered by emerging Punk Rockers of the 1970s. The Romantics have been including the song in their sets since their beginning. They however never recorded it for an album.
- The Romantics live cover of "Route 66 (Nat King Cole)" is only available on this King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast. It has not been released by the band or on the King Biscuit Records release either, which is long out of print by the way. It's not even on the bootleg version of this recording called One Night In Texas: Live 1983 The Complete San Antonio Broadcast which is a 17 track release of the concert.

- I created fades at the beginning and ending of the show.
- No noise reduction, EQ or sound tampering was done tape was encoded warts and all other than above stated fades.

Other Notes:
- This is a very early show for the Romantics, their first LP hadn't been released yet, just the single "Tell It To Carrie".
- The single was first released on The W4 Homegrown Show LP, an album released by the radio station to promote it's local music program.
- WWWW, or W4 as we Detroiters called it, was one of 3 FM Album Rock stations in Detroit. WRIF, WABX, & WWWW. WLLZ would come later.
- W4 was the radio station in the movie Private Parts, where Howard Stern was known as Hopalong Howie. That was after the station had went country
- W4 also was one of the first radio stations in the country to broadcast in quadraphonic.
- The Michigan Punk/New Wave scene would explode with talent around this time, The Romantics were a spark of that explosion.
- "Running Away", "She Knows Me", and "Comin' Back Home" have not been released.

So I had planned on posting this a little while ago but with all the crap I went through with Blogger over Filefactory it wasn't posted. This is a very nice recording from Frank Zappa's 1976 Tour. The cool thing for me is that Frank has Grand Funk Railroad drummer Donny Brewer play drums on "Dinah Moe Humm".

Frank Zappa produced Grand Funk Railroad's final studio album with original bassist Mel Schacher. The band had already broken up after the release of the album Born To Die. Grand Funk wanted Fank Zappa to produce the album but it didn't happen. When Frank Zappa admitted interest in producing an album by Grand Funk Railroad the band reunited just to record with Frank!! The resulting Good Singin' Good Playin' actually had Frank Zappa playing lead guitar on the instrumental track "Out To Get You". This was the last Grand Funk recording at their own studio "The Swamp" in Fenton Michigan. The swamp is still in operation. My band Psychosis were lucky enough to have recorded our debut album there. When I told my guitar player that Frank Zappa had recorded in the very studio we stood in it seemed to put that little more to his playing we would get from him live, Frank being one of his biggest influences.

The Motor City Madman Ted Nugent released his first album in 1967 with the Detroit group The Amboy Dukes. The album of Psychdelic Garage Rock spawned a hit with the Big Joe Williams song "Baby Please Don't Go". Ted would keep the song in his live sets even after going solo. Ted would use The Amboy Dukes name until 1975 when he released what would be his first solo record. The original Ted Nugent Band was supposed to be just that , a band, it was for the first album that the band part was left off the name. This would be a constant needle in the side to St. Holmes and Davies who would leave the band after the Cal Jam 2 performance. Cliff Davies would stay with Ted until the Scream Dream album. The original up-loader of this show gives the classic line up for this show. I don't know if this is correct or not. St. Holmes was on the album and tour but Dave Kiswiney played bass on the album and Carmine Appice played drums. I actually attended this show with some friends. It was my senior year in high school and we road the bus down Michigan Avenue to Cobo Arena listening to a cassette of the new album all the way. I don't remember who played the drums or bass due to the amount of partying we did. I do remember that summer a couple of fans stole a politicians (I think Mayor Colman Young's) limo and refused to give it back till "Wango Tango" was made the official song for the state of Michigan. That didn't pan out to good for them.

This show was a presentation of The Source Radio Network and comes from the tour to promote the Nugent album. The song "No, No, No" was the lead single. 5 of the 11 tracks featured here are from that album the rest are classics from the Derek St. Holmes era.

Recording notes:
- The recording is made up of live in the studio performances by the original Alice Cooper Band.
- There is no studio audience so present.
- The Detroit Tube Works was a live in studio broadcast on a local Detroit UHF television channel. There was also a live simulcast of the audio on KSHE 95 FM Detroit. The Alice Cooper Band was the premiere episode of the show. I have found a couple more recordings from the program. A Johnny Winter set where Johnny Winter and his bass player sit surrounded by a studio audience playing the blues. A Rolling Stones broadcast from Olympia Stadium. A Captain Beefheart in studio performance. Humble Pie, Fleetwood Mac, and John Lee Hooker

Other Notes:
- The Alice Cooper Band was formed by Detroit native Vincent Furnier and four of his High School friends. From their very early days as Nazz through their days as The Spiders the young band always wanted to have a very visual element to their performances. At the end of their very first show they staged a fake fist fight and break up of the band on stage.
- Vincent Furnier portrayed many characters on stage to go with the songs being performed. Alice Cooper was just one of those characters.
- As more and more songs were written for the Alice Cooper character Vincent Furnier took the character name as his stage name.
- The band was misunderstood in their Arizona home so they moved to California. California audiences didn't know how to take the Alice Cooper Band, character and their music. The band had to move to Detroit where the Detroit audiences made the band feel at home.

- This legendary early live concert TV Show ran on a Detroit PBS Channel which was on the UHF band. Old timers like me can remember when TVs had antennas not cable and you had VHF and UHF channels. VHF was "Network TV" the 3 channels CBS, ABC & NBC. UHF was local broadcasting and rececption was bad. Each had a separate antenna. If you wanted to watch UHF you had to put aluminium foil on the UHF antenna and move it around in the room till the picture cleared enough to watch.
- The show was also simulcast on a local FM radio station for better sound. Some opted just to listen to the radio because UHF reception could be real bad.

Known Flaws:
- The video source is Black & White footage and is really washed out with light and has a steady line across the bottom from the tracking being slightly off, however the audio is barely marred at all by the video age.
- There is a little distortion on the audio due to the UHF TV broadcast band.
- There is some hum from the TV broadcast as well and the volume fluctuates which took some editing to smooth out.

Recording Notes:
- The recording is listed as being from 1970 however the Alice Cooper episode was the premier episode and was aird in 1971 which has been confirmed with an ad for the show. I believe that the footage is from 1971.
- I was not given any information on where the video was shot so I assume it was at the Detroit Tubeworks Studio in Walled Lake, Michigan. However some episodes were filmed at different locations.

Editing Notes:
- Played on my DVD Player through my stereo to my computer and recorded on Goldwave.
- Recording and editing was done at 24bit/95khz then the wave was resampled to 16bit/44,1khz.

Other Notes:
- Although born in Mississippi John Lee Hooker moved to Detroit Michigan to find employment in the growing auto manufacturing industry. As John Lee Hooker's fame and notoriety grew so did Detroit's love for it's adopted Blues Child. None other than Michigan Hard Rock Legends Grand Funk Railroad wrote a song celebraiting Hooker called "Little Johnny Hooker on their Todd Rundgren produced Shine On album. Hooker's Blues came from the Mississippi Delta with a strong infection of Detroit's industrial energy.

Known Faults:
- No cue sheets included with album.
- When the previous owner wrote Smokey Robinson across the inner white sleeve, they pressed hard enough to leave the words indented into Side Two across both Sections 3 and 4. This of course made for quite a bit of noise that had to be removed.
- Westwood One packs over 50 minutes of music and commercials onto one album which causes "groove crowding". This "crowding" can cause vinyl damage while playing. This also causes a low needle rumble when playing which can be audible at times when digitizing vinyl.

Recording Notes:
- No show promo included on the reord set.
- Smokey sometimes speaks to the audience at length so I decided to separate the long spoken parts from the songs as "Smokey Speaks".

Editing Notes:
- Record hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System prior to playback.
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LP prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable balanced: Needle Tracking, Azimuth, Pressure & Antiskid Dialed In: Soundcard stereo field maximized: Goldwave always set to record while filtering any offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.

Other Notes:
- Smokey sings a very special version of "Being With You". 3 unique versions of the song were released. There was an english version called "Being With You". A Spanish version called "Aqui Con Tigo" and a bilingual English/Spanish version called "Being With You/Aqui Con Tigo". Smokey performs the bilingual English/Spanish version "Being With You/Aqui Con Tigo".
- I have included the Spanish and the English lyrics to "Being With You".

Known Faults:
- Vinyl was not properly cleaned before encoding which left quite a bit of vinyl noise to clean up.
- No Cue Sheets or Info Text was given with download.

Recording Notes:
- Encoder had his right and left patch cords crossed somewhere because what is right is left an what is left is right.
- The recording is a little rough at the start of "Tracks Of My Tears" but quickly cleans up.

Editing Notes:
- Connected the files to allow for easier editing.
- Evened out then raised the volume of the files.
- Removed any DC offset.
- Did a De-click with Goldwave with a tolerance of 2000%.
- Some larger clicks removed manualy.
- Some vinyl deffects may still be audible. Some clicks couldn't be removed without further damaging the sound so they were left. Others may have just been missed in the process.
- A rumble/bump filter was used on the files with an initial cutoff of 40khz due to excessive needle noise.

Other Notes:
- The recording is a little rough at the start of "Tracks Of My Tears" but quickly cleans up. Some small fuzz had to be left since it caused bad after effects when cleaned up.
- The show starts with a very special arrangement of "Tracks Of My Tears". Starting acoustically and finishing as an almost Gospel Soul Ballad.
- Smokey sings a very special version of "Being With You". 3 unique versions of the song were released. There was an english version called "Being With You". A Spanish version called "Aqui Con Tigo" and a bilingual English/Spanish version called "Being With You/Aqui Con Tigo". Smokey performs the bilingual English/Spanish version "Being With You/Aqui Con Tigo".

3 songs in 43 minutes, it's short on titles not on outstanding performances. I am really enjoying the fact that a Detroit born and bred Kenny Garrett is playing sax on this one. Chick Corea only plays with the best, knowing that he picked a Detroit musician is a point of pride. I love it when 1 of us makes it out of The D. Detroit has always been a deep ocean of talent with a rich musical history. Oddly enough with with that rich history it's always been a scene that was hard to break out of. A lot of the music that came/comes form Detroit was/is seen as empty of anything but energy. The MC5 seen as a huge influence on Garage Rock, Punk Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Alt-Rock and Grunge were dismissed in their day. Their are more stories than that but The MC5 are the best known example, also this isn't Jazz talk so I will end this little rant by saying enjoy the music and check out those sax solos!!

A great sounding recording of Michigan Homeboy Del Shannon during his 1980's comeback. In the 1980s there were a few music stars who's careers ended in the 1970s or earlier made come backs. Chubby Checker, Mitch Ryder, Tina Turner, John Fogerty and Gary "US" Bonds to name a few. I personally didn't know Del Shannon was included in that list until I found this recording. I downloaded it from The Traders Den maybe 4 days ago. What a show too! Del is in fine voice, the band plays great and the set list is top notch. The cover of The Beatles Classic "From Me To You" is worth the download alone!!!
