Pre-Queensrÿche recordings from Geoff Tate & Kelly Gray during their time in Myth. Though considered a progressive rock band these recordings do show a very metallic edge. It was during Geoff's tenure in Myth that Chris Degarmo heard him sing. Chris then invited Geoff to sing on Queensrÿche's EP sessions. Originally a session gig, Chris invited Geoff to join Queensrÿche once he seen how great the recordings went. During the recent split between Queensrÿche and Geoff Tate, the band stated Geoff was never really a fan of metal and was steering the band too far from the genre. These early recordings of songs that Geoff wrote/co-wrote well before joining Queensrÿche, songs that would be cannibalized and re-written for subsequent Queensrÿche albums show distinct metal roots. The tapes due suffer some what from age but are completely listenable & enjoyable. Tate's vocals are immaculate especially on "Scarborough Fair".

Rosebud picked another good one for you, this time a Master Recording from Geoff Tate on yet another World Tour celebrating Operation Mindcrime. So you get the full Mindcrime performance and a couple other tracks. One song stands out as being a rare performance, "One Foot In Hell" from Operation Mindcrime II. It's not a track played that often with being in a complete performance of Mindcrime II. So that's pretty cool, Geoff's in pretty good voice as well. All in all a really enjoyable listen.

Another nice sounding audience recording from Geoff Tate former lead vocalist of Queensrÿche. This recording comes from Geoff's Big Rock Show Hits Tour which actually focused on more than just the hits (now I actually like these songs so now for my reactions to the choises) "Desert Dance" comes from the Tribe album, "Sacred Ground" comes from Q2K, "I Am I" & "Bridge" come from Promised Land (okay these are on the tail end of their hayday), "Cold" comes from Frequency Unknown, "Real World" comes from the Last Action Hero Movie Soundtrack, all of which comes after the bands "so called Hayday". All of which make this a real nice set from Geoff. I love Operation Mindcrime and Empire but damn there are other songs that would be nice to hear once in a while. Like this particular set. Rosbud actually pleasantly surprised by some of these choices. I mean "Cold" from Frequency Unknown. Geoff's Queensryche album with half of Hollywood's 1980's musicians playing on it. I own the original, not the remixed remastered re-release. It sounds like the demos for an album that haven't been fleshed out yet (I'm being a little polite). A really rushed affair, but "Cold" comes off sounding pretty damn good here. I hope his upcoming tours will include more of his solo material and material recorded with Sweet Oblivion.

This is a very listenable audience recording recently added to Rosebud's Queensrÿche collection. Like me if she won't listen to it more than once she will not share it here. Geoff Tate has been more prolific in his music career since his "separation" with Queensrÿche in 2012. Tate has released 1 album under the Queensrÿche name, Frequency Unknown (which is pretty lackluster to say the least). A solo album, Kings & Thieves which was in production when the breakup came (and is a great album!). 3 albums were released with his band Operation Mindcrime (which are also kick ass!). Then also made 2 very killer albums with the band Sweet Oblivion (some of the best material Geoff has been associated with since the break-up). Sweet Oblivion actually headlined over Queensrÿche in at least one Festival situation.

To be fair Queensrÿche has released 4 albums with the modified line-up fronted by Todd La Torre. Todd La Torre has turned into a very active participant in the writing and recording of every album. Todd also played drums on 2019's The Verdict since Scott Rockenfield it seems will not be returning to the band. That leaves 2 founding members in the band, however guitarist Mike Stone has returned. Mike was first to fill the empty guitar chair when Chris DeGarmo left. There has been a few big money offers to re-unite the Classic Era Line-Up of Queensrÿche, all but Geoff Tate has dismissed them. Geoff states if they could sit in a room and talk it over maybe, but for the remaining members it would have to be about the money, which they don't really need. It's not going to happen, fans need to move on and enjoy the music while they can, the boys are not getting any younger!

I received this in shn but converted it to flac. It's always traded/posted as a soundboard recording but listening reveals it to be an excellent audience recording.

Rosebud is a big fan of Queensrÿche, she has a big collection of bootlegs from them as well as everything they released...that is up till the split with Geoff Tate. We both stopped supporting the band after that. At any rate...Rosebud usually grades her Queensrÿche shows on how well Geoff Tate does the scream in "Take Hold Of The Flame". She rates this one very highly since he pulls the scream off pretty well. For me this is the best era off the band, since it was the most blatantly Heavy Metal era. The band actually became a Progressive Metal Force To Be Reckoned With, but the Queensrÿche E.P. and the Warning album were released right as I was 18 out of school and owned my first real hot rod a 1972 Chevy Chevelle Malibu and those 2 records were blasted real loud through those speakers quite a lot.

If you've been following the blog for any bit of time you know Rosebud's Favorite Singer is Geoff Tate formally of Queensrÿche. This recording is from Tate's music project since the big break up. This broadcast was done for his fans who are locked down during the quarantine. It's an acoustic show of Queensrÿche songs. Some of the songs performed were a little surprising. "Bridge" and "Chasing Blue Sky" for instance.

When it comes to this musical debate Rosebud & I both agree. we are a Geoff Tate is the only singer for Queensrÿche camp. We both have heard Todd La Torre impersonate Geoff in the studio. We have heard many bootlegs of the Todd La Torre line-up live. To us it's the same as Journey with Arnel Pineda, Boston with Tommy DeCarlo, or Judas Priest with Tim "Ripper" Owens (to a lesser extent since he brought other influences into the song writing JD). They all hired Tribute Band Singers just like Queensrÿche with Todd La Torre. They are trying to hard to sound like the fan favorite line up is still there (dare I say KISS!! JD).

Deep Purple, after Ian Gillan left hired Glenn Hughes & David Coverdale, neither tried to sound like Ian. When Ozzy Osbourne left Black Sabbath, they hired Ronnie James Dio who did not try to sound like Ozzy. When Dio left Rainbow, Blackmore hired Graham Bonnet, not at all like Dio vocally. These changes took balls. Each band changed a signature sound around a new singers vocal abilities. Not always a winning maneuver, just ask Mötley Crüe & John Corabi. That team up made 1 of Mötley Crüe's best albums, fans said nope. Blaze Bayley did a hell of a job with Iron Maiden, releasing 2 great albums, fans said nope (and Bruce still sings Blaze era tracks live!! JD).

So don't get me wrong Todd La Torre, Arnel Pineda, Tommy DeCarlo & Tim "Ripper" Owens (a Metal God himself damn it!) sing/sang their asses off! They are great at what they do/did, which is what the band wants/wanted them to do, kick ass with someone elses voice. Not easy to do.
