- Track 06 "30 Days In The Hole" (Humble Pie) called "Days In The House" on cue sheet

I had this on my hard drive and it wasn't fully chaptered so I  decoded the flacs and cut the tracks with Goldwave. This is a great sounding Pre-FM recording. Worth the download time just to hear John and Band cover Humble Pie's "30 Days In The Hole" and Free's "Fire And Water".

"Dr. Junkie" Eric Rosser – piano, keyboards

Notes:
- "Welcome To Chinatown" has a cut in the middle just after John says "this guys real bashful".
- I added some EQ to bring out the bass and the highs, it was mostly mid range. I also tried to even out the volume as much as possible. It still wavers a bit but is not as bad as it was.

I made this set from a webstream at Archive.org. Some of the shows there are restricted to stream only. This stream actually ran at 24bit/48khz so I encoded it as such. A spectrum file is included to prove it's lossless. It was a little flat toned so I ran it through an EQ. It's an enjoyable listen now.

*There are a few glitches in the recording I believe from a cable issue.

I downloaded this recording for two reasons. #1 I love Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp #2 Because Speedy at So Many Roads To Ease My Soul is looking for recordings from Farm Aid. So hey 2 birds killed with one big rock. I don't post audience recordings unless they are worth listening to more than once so after downloading this I had to audition it before posting. I was sitting in my music room listening to this and Rosebud came in and sat on the couch. It was during the Willie Nelson set and something Willie sang or said made her giggle. I asked if she could hear everything okay and she said yes that she was enjoying it. I then asked would she listen to it again she replied yes. The sound is pretty good, some times a little distant sounding with some bottom end booming but all in all a very enjoyable listen.

Draftervoi's original notes:

Instead of trotting out the usual “hits plus new songs” set list, Mellencamp takes a tour through his record collection and opens up with four cover songs. His taste is more eclectic than you’d expect. He starts things off with “Heartbreak Hotel.” Yes, the Elvis Presley song... but he’s doing a note-for-note clone of John Cale’s ominous arrangement from the Slow Dazzle album.

Next up is a pretty standard cover of The Animals’ “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (but he beats Elvis Costello’s cover of the same song by a good two years), followed by a quick run through the Left Banke’s 1966 baroque-pop hit, “Pretty Ballerina.” He finishes up with Lee Dorsey’s “Ya Ya.”

Then he gets down to what you’d expect: songs from John Cougar, Nothing Matters and What If It Did, and American Fool. But he’s not done with showing off his good taste yet: at the end, he pulls out a cover of Richard Thompson’s “Shoot Out The Lights,” and calls him “one of the best songwriters writin’ songs today...” John Mellencamp was taking valuable air time on a nationally syndicated radio show to promote Richard Thompson. Pretty cool...

So this is something a bit different; you get five cover songs, none of which were ever officially released. I also did a painstaking manual removal of each click and pop, so this is about as perfect as this show will ever get. I included scans of the disc label, affidavit, cue sheet, and front cover.

When John Mellencamp agreed to do a WMMS Coffee Break show he had a few things the radio station had to agree too first. One it would be a one time only show, no rebroadcasts of any kind not even single tracks. Two it was going to be him alone playing an acoustic show. The program had started as an all acoustic affair but had grown to full concerts, John wanted to do the original format. WMMS-FM in Cleveland had been an early champion of Mellencamp when his albums were released under the name Johnny Cougar. Mellencamp felt deep appreciation for that when agreeing to this show. John threw in some great covers of some of his favorite songs, along with some of his own hits. This fabulous show, which comes from a Pre-FM master reel, is well worth the download.
