This show is also released as You Speak My Language on vinyl. Every release I have came across on the net has the set list in a different order. The sound of this recording is very good and brings together 2 of my Favorite Jazz Guitarists. With Steve Swallow & Bill Stewart rounding out the group you have a line-up that can't lose. This is an upgrade to an earlier Carla Bley Christmas show. The previous show was posted in MP3 224kbps, this one is in Flac and includes 3 bonus tracks from a 2008 performance. If you haven't heard Carla's Christmas Carols then you really should download this show. Carla makes great use of the Brass section, even using tuba, French horn and flugelhorn to achieve a nice range of instrumental voices. This show is in as heavy of a Holiday Playlist rotation as Trans-Siberian Orchestra (that's huge, TSO is big with my family!). Rosebud even asks for it to be played, so you know it's not an Avant-Garde Jazz event. It's easily digestible by even the slightest of Jazz fans.

A little Carla Bley after everything slows down, just what the soul needs to relax and enjoy the morning (or what's left of it) with a cup of coffee and a little morning smoke to help slow things down. The deer are laying in my back yard again this morning, I think I have been adopted as a sanctuary for hunting season. I lived in the country for 7 years never had a deer lay in my yard...now I live in the city of Pontiac and deer and turkey are in my yard all the time. Smarter than the average hunter they are lol! (with a Yoda accent)

Some people have this dated as the 29th of August not the 30th. I left it as I received it but wanted to pass on the possible date as well.

While we were away Carla Bley died October 17, 2023 from brain cancer, she was 87. I am a big fan of Carla Bley as a writer and arranger. She has always been a little unconventional in her arraignments. Maybe this is why Charlie Haden chose her to lead the arrangements for his Liberation Music Orchestra, one of the first Jazz Protest Groups (maybe the only?). When Jack Bruce wanted to form a Jazz group, he used Carla Bley on organ. Carla has worked with many of the greats and not so famous players as well. Her talent will be terribly missed in the World Of Jazz.

This is a great show, very entertaining. Carla & the band a in a very good mood, laughing and joking with the audience. They actually play requests shouted from the audience. They even play Carla's reply to audience members who boo, "Boo To You Too". I love Carla Bley's music, I think she's a very talented composer, arranger, conductor, player. For a keyboard payer a lot of her arrangements and compositions are very brass heavy. As I said she's also a great player, when her long time musical partner, Steve Swallow, puts out solo material she is always included. The arrangements in that situation would always be Steve's. Carla also played in a Jack Bruce Jazz group, which she calls playing Rock & Roll.

This is a very nice sounding recording. The New Standard Trio released their 1st album in 2014 (all songs were recorded in one take!). The intention was to write new compositions using the older/classic forms of Jazz. The standard trio musical format is in play but with a small twist. Jamie Saft switches from piano to Hammond B3 organ on a few tracks. That being said the music is more say Chick Corea than John Medeski. Steve Swallow is actually featured on 9 shows posted on this site. 8 of those shows is as the constant bass companion to Carla Bley. 1 of those shows has Steve leading his own Quintet, with Carla Bley at his side. The duo have been romantically involved since the early 1980's and constant musical partners since the 1970's. Those shows can be found here. Jamie Saft and Bobby Previte are new on my radar but I will be seeing if I can find more of their shows having heard this recording.
