JustDave's Notes:
- A Big Thank You to Sam Elliot's Mustache for sending his vinyl to be encoded!
- Thank yo to my fellow members of The Collective Of Live Music for continued support and inspiration.
Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove "ovu" tone for DJs to test levels and balance before airing the program at the beginning of side A. It has been encoded and moved to a folder so that it is not played accidentally with the program.
- There are 2 locked groove promo beds at the end of Side B, one with a Bill Minkin voiceover the other without, they have been encoded and moved to the end of the program.
- Both parts of this show were aired as King Biscuit Flower Hour #KB-350 aired January 18, 1981 but with one less song each. This rebroadcast added The Outlaws' "Devils Road" and The Johnny Van Zant Band's "Only The Strong Survive"
Known Flaws:
- The cue sheet names a completely wrong line up including Henry Paul who was kicked out of the band in 1977.
Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System using distilled water prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable & tone arm balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth set: Needle Pressure & Antiskid digitaly set:
- Computer Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave set to record while filtering any DC Offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served the situation.
- Raised the volume of the commercials to match that of the music and voice overs.
- A rumble filter with an initial cut off of 50khz and a static steepness of 2 was used to lessen the needle noise on the commercials due to having to raise the volume to match that of the music and voice overs.
Other Notes:
- The first time I heard The Outlaws was when one of the FM stations I listened to as a teenager played "Green Grass And High Tides". The song kicked my ass with it's extended guitar solos. Next time I was partying with friends I asked if anyone had heard the song before. The kid whose house it was got up and put on The Outlaws debut album and I was hooked. Here was Southern Rock with hard driving guitars yet vocal harmonies that would make The Eagles take notice. They have been one of my favorite Southern Rock bands ever since.
- Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother Johnny Van Zant was chosen to front the reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd in the 1990s. Before that he headed up the Johnny Van Zant Band which offered up a more Arena Rock/R&B flavored Southern Rock.

Part 1 of our spotlight on guitarist Nels Cline and our 3rd Sunday Morning Jazz offering comes from Nels joining forces with the Legendary Medeski, Martin, & Wood. This hour long improvisational performance is great headphone music. Fans of Medeski, Martin & Wood will note that this incarnation has more of a Post-Rock feel to the music than their normal Jazz/Funk vibe. Wilco fans may want to check this show out to see what Nels Cline does on his nights off.

Jazz Legend Charles Lloyd plays his Wild Man Dance Suite in it's entirety. Fabulous stuff that is very highly recommended! The music was presented as one long piece. I downloaded it from BigO and they split the tracks to make it easier to download from their sight.
Wild Man Dance Suite is a sweeping new masterpiece from Charles Lloyd. Blending traditional jazz elements with visceral sounds and textures from antiquity, Lloyd has created something altogether new and exciting. Composed for a quartet of piano, bass, and drums, with the addition of Greek lyra and the Hungarian gypsy cimbalom, the ensemble performs the six movements of the suite like a flowing orchestral unit. - metmuseum.org
Charles Lloyd turned 80 on March 15.

JustDave's Notes:
There were 3 bonus studio tracks on the CD-r "I'm So Glad", "Who Is That Girl", and "Get The Picture". Each were early A-Square Label singles. Theses singles have been re-released on A-Square Of Course: The Story Of Michigan's Legendary A-Square Records, a single CD 25 song compilation. Those songs were removed from this upload. Allegedly this recording was actually leaked to Motor City music stores by Gary Quackenbush from his master. Gary Quackenbush was actively playing around Detroit when this recording surfaced on CD-r. He played around Detroit for a couple years in the 1990s and issued bootlegs of all SRC material on CD-r. I own all their albums, Initial pressings of them all I bought off an SRC Groupie my Aunt Red knew.
SRC came together when former members of the Detroit bands, The Chosen Few and The Fugitives joined forces in The Scot Richard Case. The band issued a few singles on the Motor City's legendary A-Square Records. The bands cover of "I'm So Glad" was so popular in the Motor City that most Detroiters believed that Cream had copied it off of The Scot Richard Case. The success of these singles and the bands reputation as a great live act earned the band attention from Capitol Records. When the band issued it's first full length album they had shortened the name to SRC. The band had also changed it's style from Rock to Progressive Rock. The first SRC album can now sound a little Spinal Tap-ish, but was at the time a great representation of Progressive/Psychedelic Rock. The band released 3 albums while still active. In the 1990's there was a revival in the popularity of SRC and the album Lost Masters was released which contained most of the unreleased material that the band had in he vaults. The original 3 albums were remastered and released on CD, as well as the greatest hits compilation Black Sheep (the CD's are out of print but worth seeking out). SRC were one of the Motor City's acts thought destined for stardom but never really caught on in the USA. The band did have a large following in the British Isles, which is were the re-issued CD's actually came from. Peter Gabriel actually admitted to wearing out the grooves of his first copy of the bands debut album. The band was the first in the Motor City to own their own PA, light rig and studio, all of which the band used to rent to other local artists.

Band was on the same bill as Country Joe & The Fish, and Taj Mahal. From the bands US Tour early 1969. Led Zeppelin played the Fillmore from January 9 through January 12, 1969. Then back on April 24 & 27, 1969.
LPs cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning system prior to a flat transfer of the vinyl to CD-r. A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used prior to LP playback on said system. I used Goldwave to to manually remove a few real big pops that were due to scratches on the LP. I did not use a pop fix or noise reduction program. This and a couple other records, all boots, were found in the basement of my house when I moved in. They were covered in mildew or mold, which was cleaned by the sonic cleaner. There will still be some snaps but the vinyl is now playable and an enjoyable listen.

Alice Cooper (Vincent Furnier) born in Detroit but his family moved to Arizona when he was quite young. It was there that the idea of a band came to the minds of the teens who would become Alice Cooper. The audiences in Arizona didn't quite understand. They moved to California were the scene didn't understand them. Frank Zappa signed them because of that fact. 2 albums released by Frank Zappa's label did nothing to help. It wasn't till the band moved back to Detroit that anyone figured it out. It was Bob Ezrin, he moved them to North Pontiac (about 2 miles from my new house) to practice & write. The result was the Legendary Love It To Death.
Switch to Western Wayne County where a young teen boy cleaning his Uncle's car for spending change finds a home taped 8-track tape that just said Alice Cooper Mix on it. I took it into my bedroom and stuck it into my stereo and sat back to here a band my Mom tried real hard not to let me hear. I could listen to almost anything without any hassle but Alice Cooper were forbidden. It was because of my parents misconceptions about the song "Dead Babies". It didn't help that my little sister died when she was only 15 minutes old due to my Dad's contact with Agent Orange in Viet Nam. The music just blew me for a loop. So heavy in emotion and tone. The lyrics about anything and everything a young teenager questioned in the 1970s. I was hooked to my parents dismay. I eventually educated them about the subject matter and how Alice was a character. My Mom became a fan of Alice Cooper ballads like "I'll Never Cry".

The Modern Jazz Quartet a favorite of Rosebud's (I do love them too). She likes her Jazz to as she says "sound like they are all playing the same song". She loves The MJQ's combination of piano and vibes, the fact you can "chill to it with a glass of wine" but it will not put you to sleep. I love her way of explaining what she likes. No knowledge of music theory just the pure enjoyment of the music itself and how it moves her. There are a lot of us, and I do include myself here, who have studied music music in depth that sometimes forget to just let it move us and enjoy the music...Enjoy your Sunday Morning Jazz!

Set list does not match the song tracking, but this is the complete performance. There are a lot off songs that ran together and the taper didn't quite know the set. I have left the tracking as is since I couldn't tell either. This will not take away from the listening pleasure of this show since most of the music segues from track to track.
Some Jazz Purists might say this show isn't really Jazz. The Free Form/Improvisational Elements are there as well as a healthy amount of Post-Rock/Metal. This show could please fans of such bands as SunO))), Boris, Merzbow, Pelican, Mogwai, God Speed! You Black Emperor, or mid-era King Crimson. It's not a stretch at all to say if you loved Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music or Mwandishi era Herbie Hancock this show should be in your collection.
Personally when ever Rosebud asks "how long is this one honey?" I know I'm on to something. That is one reason this gem is on heavy rotation at the home nest.

As promised last week here is a great performance from The Nels Cline Singers. Despite the name no one in the band sings, this is Instrumental Free Form Jazz. If you enjoyed last weeks show with Nels Cline joining forces with Medeski, Martin & Wood you should definitely check this one out. Also since Nels is a member of Wilco this should be of interest to fans of that band as well. The second disc is the part of the show that was not broadcast on the radio and is very listenable.

Part 2 of our spotlight on guitarist Nels Cline and our 4th Sunday Morning Jazz offering is a fine recording from his own project the Nels Cline Singers. Despite the name their is no singer in the group, their is a slight bit of chanting on one track. The band plays Free Form Jazz with a Post-Rock flavor. Fans of such bands as Mogwai, Swans, Pelican, Boris, God Speed! You Black Emperor, or even King Crimson should check this group out. Fans of Wilco may also be interested to know what Nels Cline does on his off nights. Fans of Experimental Music this is some great genre busting music. I highly recommend this recording and might I suggest using headphones and playing loud.

The 3rd part of our spotlight on guitarist Nels Cline is a fabulous recording and performance from Nels' day job with Wilco. Wilco is still on tour to promote the 2015 release Star Wars, although they do debut a few tracks from their upcoming Wilco Shmilco release.
